26 | Setra Family News Setra Family News | 27 Setra anniversary year coach stories: Real-life Setra stories For the 60 th anniversary of the Setra brand, we have been compiling stories about Setra coaches and buses from around the world. The result is a rich collection of heart-warming, moving, at times even bizarre and funny anecdotes. Beginning with this issue, the SetraFamily magazine is pleased to offer you a selection of these very unique stories. I n the eighties, an Austrian bus operator drove one of his coaches from Salzburg to Munich to pick up passengers at the airport. On the way, he saw something very unexpected and couldn’t believe his eyes. A brand-new Setra was driving towards him. But not just any Setra: it was an exact replica of the one he was sitting in – with his company logo. “How could it be? All my coaches are parked in my courtyard”, stunned, the driver continued on his way. But he couldn’t forget about the mysterious look-alike. He decided that he would have to get to the root of it: was it just an illusion or did the look-alike coach actually exist? Two days later, he drove to the Kässbohrer facility in Salzburg to find out what was The look-alike coach going on. You can imagine what he saw: a new Setra S 212 H coach with exactly the same finish and graphics as his coach. There it was in the yard – but it wasn’t one of his. As soon as the bus operator recovered from his shock, he approached the sales office, somewhat irritated. “But I didn’t even order a new coach!”, he called to the first sales person he saw. The sales rep simply smiled and said: “You’re right, but you’ll surely need another one soon!” Completely flabbergasted, the bus operator left the sales office. But this was far from being the end of the story for the bus operator. He couldn’t stop thinking about “his” new coach. And with every visit, he appreciated the new S 212 H more and more. Finally, he could no longer resist and he bought the coach – just like the clever sales rep had anticipated. Although this sales strategy may not be commonly used at Setra, there is no doubt that bus operators still find Setra irresistible – quite often in fact. For two weeks, he went back to the sales office again and again to admire the I n 1981, a brand-new Setra S 215 HU was on its way from Spain to Germany. The coach was equipped with a 210 hp Pegaso engine, as well as a ZF transmission with six gears and rear-axle transmission. The driver who brought the vehicle to Germany was immediately fascinated by the coach’s unmatched technology and its indescribable handling. He got so caught Faster than allowed by law up with the fun he was having, he simply pressed on the gas pedal and completely forgot everything around him. The German police were somewhat less enthusiastic about his performance, and couldn’t believe their eyes when the coach sped past them at 156 km/h. It finally took a helicopter to abruptly wake the driver out of his euphoria, and to call him back to hard-road reality with a juicy fine. We are quite sure that the driver has never forgotten this trip. And still today, anyone who has ever driven a Setra can understand just what he felt behind the wheel of the S 215 HU. The touring coach, with its outstanding fuel efficiency, delivered a clear advantage. Turkey – VIP Setra S 415 HD coach for Dogus ˘ Holding: Nothing but the best with Setra ˛ With 124 companies and 29,000 employees, Dogus ˘ Holding is one of Turkey’s largest companies. Just like Setra, Dogus ˘ is celebrating its 60 th anniversary this year. To commemorate the milestone, ˛ ˛ Dogus ˘ took delivery of a luxurious Setra S 415 HD. ˛ L othar Holder, Head of Sales Setra- Buses and Coaches EvoBus GmbH, accepted the prize at the Busworld show in Kortrijk. “I am very pleased with this award. It is the best testimony to the fact that the S 415 GT-HD is the most costefficient touring coach for operators. With over 5,500 ComfortClass 400 coaches already sold, the results speak for themselves!” Outstanding fuel efficiency with Setra The “Green Coach Award”, given for the first time in 2011, honours coaches that deliver exceptional fuel efficiency. The prize will be awarded to either a touring coach or a city bus – alternating yearly. In tests performed over the last two years, the S 415 GT-HD achieved top results among the seven double-axle touring coaches assessed, and can now carry the “2011 Green Coach” title which places fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions in the foreground. To ensure comparability of the data measured, fuel-efficiency formulas take into account the exact weight of the loaded test vehicles. Furthermore, all vehicles are driven along the same 600-km-long, demanding test course in Saxon Switzerland and all seats are loaded with 100 kg each. “Based on this award, operators can see which coaches have proven their ecofriendliness and cost efficiency in practice”, adds Katrin Wieser, editor-in-chief “Omnibusrevue” and “Busfahrer” trade magazines. With its vast spectrum of services, it is quickly becoming Turkey’s leading service provider. ˛ A focus on quality and comfort In April this year, the company fleet was expanded by a Setra S 415 HD coach featuring nothing less than first-class equipment and amenities. In 2002, the company had purchased a Setra S 411 HD to carry executives and high-ranking guests. The decision was based primarily on quality and comfort. And, Dogus ˘ was so delighted with the S 411 HD that they decided that the next coach would also have to be a Setra – somewhat longer however in the case of the S 415 HD. ˛ First-class equipment The VIP coach features equipment and amenities of the highest quality, which, along with an eight-gear PowerShift transmission, offer a reversing camera, darkly tinted windows and an anti-theft warning system. The coach’s 15 seats include three electrically adjustable VIP seats which can be rotated by 360° and reclined by up to very relaxing 180°. They also feature heated cushions and a massage function. The other twelve Ambassador seats are all leather – as are those in the cockpit. Sheer comfort and pleasure Of course the coach galley is equipped to ensure passenger satisfaction as well. A customised galley with Gaggenau appliances, a Jura coffee machine and a wine shelf open up a wide variety of gastronomic delights. A Bang & Olufsen sound system and five flat screens guarantee a great entertainment platform and, thanks to an integrated satellite system, reception of Turkish broadcasters is always flawless. A wardrobe ensures wrinkle-free coats and jackets, while blinds on side windows, spacious lavatories and materials of the highest quality round out Dogus’ ˘ new S 415 HD VIP coach.
