Dear Seton Supporters:
The title of our annual report, “Love
is Creative Unto Infinity”, captures
the essence of everything that you
will read in these pages:
– The love of our parents, who are
paying for tuition during difficult
economic times, that creates a
Field of Dreams for us as well as
supports a prize worthy music
program and victorious athletic
teams.
– The love of our faculty and staff
that creates an excellent academic
program, a deeply spiritual
environment, and a host of
co-curricular activities.
– The love of our donors and
our alumnae that creates
numerous new scholarships for
students, extensive financial aid,
renovations to our buildings, and
a magnificent 50th anniversary
Gala that included our
talented students.
This year we did not quite reach
infinity, but we did reach our 50th
year milestone as the only school
for young women in Prince George’s
County with a strong enrollment,
stable finances, and a supportive
community. This leads me to
believe that infinity, the place where
love and creativity meet and last
forever, is within our reach because
it is indeed the spirit of Elizabeth
Seton High School.
May God continue to give us
“the light to know how to be
creative and the grace to love in all
our deeds”.
With tremendous gratitude for your
love and creativity,
Sister Ellen Marie ‘74
President
S P E A K I N G
The 2009-2010 school year was
one of the most memorable in
the history of Elizabeth Seton
High School. The premier event,
of course, was the year-long
celebration of the 50th Anniversary
of the school. We were able to mark
this milestone in a variety of ways
that provided the opportunity to
reflect on the accomplishments
of our many students, teachers,
and staff who participated in the
school’s history and contributed
to building Seton into one of the
finest learning institutions in the
Washington Metropolitan Area.
In addition to our anniversary, a
number of other notable events
have taken place over the past
year. For one, we have a change
of leadership in the President’s
office. Sister Virginia Ann Brooks,
under whose direction the Brooks
Center for Athletics and Fine
Arts was built, has gone to a new
assignment in Jacksonville, FL. Her
replacement, Sister Ellen Marie, is
a 1974 graduate of Seton. She has
made it her first order of business
to reach out to and invite back
our many alumnae, who have so
much experience and so many
accomplishments to share with
today’s Seton community.
Our enrollment remains strong, at a
time when financial pressures make
the option for a private school a
difficult one. The major reason for
this is Seton’s ongoing reputation for
academic excellence. Beyond that,
however, we are always mindful
of our mission to serve others,
honoring the legacy of St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton and the Daughters of
Charity. We have a model service
learning program, wherein our
students contribute their time
and effort to the local community,
especially to the disadvantaged.
Our retreat program has expanded
to include three-day Encounter
Retreats offered to juniors and
seniors. We also have a waiting
list for our weekend Urban Plunge
retreats, where students and faculty
prepare and serve meals at several
shelters during the day and return
to school in the evening for prayer
and reflection.
A few years ago, the Washington
Post designated Seton as one of
the thirty great schools in the
Washington area, and we continue
to work hard to live up to that
honor. Our curriculum remains as
challenging as ever and ensures that
our students are well-equipped to
meet the most rigorous of collegiate
standards. This year our graduating
seniors have earned over $8 million
in college scholarship offers and
have been accepted into such
prestigious schools as Harvard,
Brown, Swarthmore, M.I.T.,
Amherst, and Stanford. Much
of this excellent achievement is
attributable to our outstanding and
dedicated faculty and staff.
Our athletic program, under the
direction of Candy Cage, a 1981
Seton graduate, is thriving. This year,
the Roadrunners have won both the
WCAC basketball championship
and the City Title Game. The track
team has won its fourth consecutive
WCAC title and remains one of the
premier scholastic track teams in
the country.
Seton’s music program is one of the
finest in the area and is regarded as
one of the best “all women” programs
in the country. At an adjudication
in Atlanta this year, the number of
trophies and plaques received for
outstanding performances in both
the choral and instrumental groups
challenged the capacity of the bus
to hold them all on the return trip.
If history is any indicator, and Seton
now has a long enough historical
perspective to call upon, neither
the students nor the faculty will rest
on their laurels. I am confident that
in this coming year we can look
forward to accomplishments that
will equal, and hopefully exceed,
those of the past year.
Mary Lee Walls, the mother of Caitlin
‘09 and Alli ‘10, and the 2009-2010
president of Seton Athletic Boosters
credited a successful year of fundraising
for the Seton athletic teams due to the
collective efforts of the parents and
the student athletes. With the help
of Sue Sheehan, the mother of Kelsey
Sheehan-Wright ‘07 and Erin Sheehan-
Wright ’08, Mary combined her love
for Seton and her creativity to design
ways to raise money for the athletic
department without continuing to
reach into the pockets of the parents.
Her ideas, such as raffles and restaurant
nights, where a percentage of the
proceeds went toward Seton, inspired
the parents to put forward a major effort
to build a progressive athletic program
that nurtures the infinite talents of over
250 Seton athletes and prepares them
to move on to college with confidence
and successful skills.
Seton’s Athletic Booster organization is
important because it provides financial
support for all of the athletic programs.
Their fundraising efforts have improved
the appearance, the performance, and
the morale of the student athletes
by providing better uniforms and
equipment for games and practices as
well as rewarding and honoring each
athlete for their talents and success at
the end of the season. The boosters
have increased and encouraged team
camaraderie and parent involvement,
but most importantly, they have helped
to keep athletic fees affordable.
This year, the Athletic Booster’s passion
and enthusiasm to see Seton Athletics
reclaim its champion status in the
world of high school sports paid off.
Through their teamwork and ambition,
they raised over $18,000 which helped
to march Seton’s athletic teams toward
victory. With these funds, the athletic
department was able to achieve many
of its goals such as:
• trophies and banquets to honor each
of the athletes for a successful season
• travel funds for teams to victoriously
participate in elite meets,
competitions, and tournaments.
• refurbishment and re-lining of the
auditorium floor
With a triumphant year already under
their belt, the Athletic Boosters have
started to work on next year’s goal of
repairing the pipes and the drainage in
the athletic field so that they can add
long jump pits.
Thanks to their love and their creative
vision for expanding the program,
the Athletic Boosters have given
Seton’s athletic department infinite
opportunities for a brighter future
and endless encouragement as Seton
imparts to its students, skills and values
that will last a lifetime.
M U S I C
B O O S T E R S
The creative talents of the music
department’s students and teachers
produce beautiful music as Seton’s
Music Boosters dreams up imaginative
ways to raise money in order to support
the music program. Thanks to the
leadership of Janice Partenheimer
and Gina Barley, the Music Boosters,
which is a collaboration of parents of
music students, celebrates a stellar year
of fundraising that has brought in more
than $132,000. This money has helped
to underwrite the cost of entry fees for
adjudications, awards, private lessons,
staging equipment, lights, sound, and
the purchase of music and musical
instruments. The Boosters has also
helped to cover a portion of the music
department’s trip to Atlanta, where the
students brought home an abundance
of awards and accolades.
Although the Dance Marathon is their
most successful fundraising event,
as it has raised enough money to
cover the department’s music trips,
other fundraisers such as selling
Christmas wreaths and jewelry have
proven to be profitable and fun! The
Music Boosters has also funded Seton
music scholarships. Based on a set
criteria and the student’s progress, the
Music Boosters can sponsor a student
scholarship up to $1,000.
The Music Boosters program has had
quite a bit of success with supporting
the music department. Truly, they have
demonstrated the love and creativity
necessary for seeing the music
department soar to infinite heights.
Deirdre Bonuccelli is the vice
president of the Crew Boosters. She
has been involved with crew ever
since her daughter, Christa, was a
freshman. Since then, Deirdre has
continued to build a foundation for
the crew program that assures the
team a successful future. Over the
years, she has assessed the needs of the
team and has pulled together a group
of parents that give guidance and
support, so that the young Seton crew
members can achieve their season’s
goals. Her purpose is to alleviate the
logistics of running the team from the
coach and crew members in order to
allow them to focus on training and
regatta victories.
Crew Boosters have designated a
board of members who are crew
parents, and they lead the program in
fundraising projects and in focusing
on the necessities of making the team
successful. Each parent receives a
copy of a crew handbook, complete
with terminology, rules, and financials
for the year. They are also given the
opportunity to sign up as volunteers
for different team projects and as
parent chaperones. Operating the
concession stands during University
of Maryland games is the biggest
fundraiser for the crew boosters.
Crew Boosters have achieved their
goals for this year: one of which
was to purchase a trailer to haul the
boats to the dock for practice and
competitions. They have also helped
pay for boat storage, team uniforms,
and regatta entry fees. Their goal
for fundraising next year includes
acquiring corporate sponsorships and
focusing their energy toward other
creative methods for raising funds,
as they are in need of a new shell, a
four boat, and other pieces of new
equipment.
The Crew Boosters have seen the
fruits of their goal of allowing the crew
members and coaches to focus on
training for victories. The team was
triumphant at State Championships
and participated in the elite Stotesbury
Cup, which is the national and largest
high school rowing competition. They
ranked 11th in the time trials and
4th in the semifinals. Next year, the
team will return to the tournament as
stronger competition. With the Crew
Boosters keeping the team’s spirit high,
increasing the fundraising, and the
focusing on winning, the next season
promises to be another winner for our
crew team.
After
Seton’s Field of Dreams Fund was
initiated to restore our athletic field,
re-surface our track, and equip the area
with new bleachers and proper safety
lighting. The project started with the
support of Seton’s friends, Senator Doug
C r e a t i v I T Y F U L F I L L S
A F I E L D O F D R E A M S
Peters and Senator David Harrington,
who helped secure a $50,000 matching
grant from the State of Maryland. The
generosity of our faculty and staff,
parents, and alumnae gifted us with the
required $25,000 for the match.
The funding was capped with a major
gift of $15,000 from Jerry Nielsen, a
close friend of Sharon and Ed Pasterick,
who brought the project to completion.
Our thanks to everyone who made this
dream a reality.
Stephanie Martinez, Tyler
Williams, Maria Meli, and Sara
Hammett went as pilgrims,
not as tourists, with Sister Ellen
Marie to St. Joseph Provincial House
to answer one question: who was
Sister Jacqueline Kilar. Upon setting
out, they had only a small bit of
information. Sister Jacqueline was
a Daughter of Charity who taught
French at both Elizabeth Seton High
School and Immaculate Conception
Academy, and was revered enough
for at least one of her students
to create a Foreign Language
Scholarship in her honor. The four
Seton students, who were recipients
of the scholarship, wanted to know
more: who was the Sister who
had suddenly blessed them, their
education and their families.
Stopping off at her graveside, the
girls noticed nothing very different
from the many other sisters who were
buried alongside of Sister Jacqueline.
They were indeed descendants of
their foundress, Elizabeth Seton,
and like her, called to a life of service
for others. Yet pausing to pray at
her tombstone was indeed a pivotal
point of this pilgrimage. In the still
silence of a very warm day, there was
a sense of sacredness and perhaps
even suffering.
The students continued their search
among the living as they visited
several sisters and asked, “What
do you remember about Sister
Jacqueline?” Slowly the pieces fit
together like a puzzle. As a teacher,
she was devoted to her students.
She was strict, but sensitive to them
as individuals. All of her students
knew of her devotion to The Little
Prince, reflecting both her childlike
humor and her profound spiritual
insight. She spent many individual
hours with each student conducting
oral drills so that they could master
the most difficult aspect of learning
a language: speaking fluently. She
also wanted to know each student
personally. Like the author of The
Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-
Exupéry, she believed that “It is the
time you have spent with your rose
that makes your rose so important.”
Sister Jacqueline was able to master
the French language to such an
extent that she became a renowned
translator for her community: giving
her sisters the gift of their founders’
writings translated from French to
English. When cancer struck her at
a young age, she was a fighter. One
sister remembered her praying in the
chapel even when she was so very
sick. Another sister remembered
her trying to beat the cancer with
special diets and her very positive
attitude. Finally, shortly before she
died, she asked to speak with each
sister with whom she lived. What
personal messages she gave each one
were theirs alone, but the girls could
be sure that it was a call to holiness
as a way to happiness.
As the girls continued their
pilgrimage, visiting the Basilica and
shrines of Elizabeth Seton, it was
easy to imagine Elizabeth Seton
giving that same message to her
sisters at her bedside when she lay
ill. It was important for the students
to sense the similarity between
Sister Jacqueline and St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton as their scholarship
depends on their ability not only
to demonstrate academic strength
in language and linguistics, but
to participate in extracurricular
activities that reflect positively on
the life and work of Elizabeth Seton.
Their pilgrimage ended with prayer
not only for the anonymous donor
who has given this scholarship
for one year, but also for Sister
Jacqueline’s sister, Joanne Watts,
who has added to this scholarship
with her personal gift.
Other donors and former students
of Sister Jacqueline who may want
to give to this new scholarship
fund are invited to contact
Tish Ates had a strong devotion
to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
She believed in her values,
especially her dedication to serving
others. She also believed in the
strong Catholic and academic
values taught at Elizabeth Seton
High School where she sent her
three daughters: Robin Ates Kirkley
‘81, Dana Ates McAnney ‘84, and
Laura Ates Pautler ‘00. Following
in the footsteps of St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton, Tish contributed much of
her time to volunteering at Seton,
and she put her heart and soul into
continuing the school’s legacy. She
served as president of the Seton
Parents’ Club for many years. Under
her leadership, the Parents’ Club
raised money for new curtains in
the Seton library. She supported
other fundraisers such as the Phonea-thon,
the Field of Dreams, the
construction of the Brooks Center,
and the auction. Tish also worked
behind the scenes decorating for pep
rallies, homecomings, and galas. She
took pride in Seton’s presentation
and enjoyed turning the auditorium
into an elegant banquet hall, or doing
last minute costume alterations for
the students. Her love for Seton
Athletics prompted her to donate a
new roadrunner costume. Even after
her daughters graduated, Tish was
well known for her commitment and
service to Seton. Her involvement
in activities, down to the last detail,
exhibited her genuine love for the
Seton community and her belief
that the school truly provides the
world with the light to know and the
grace to do. She touched everyone
with her kindness, compassion,
and charm, making Seton a better
place for the students, teachers,
staff, alumnae and friends. She was
indeed Seton’s biggest fan!
On April 13, 2010, Tish was
called home to the Lord; however,
her spirit of love, commitment,
and grace continues to bless our
hallways. Tish will always be
remembered as a loving wife and
mother and a dedicated member
of the Seton Community. We
thank God every day for her loving
touch, exemplary dedication, and
vibrant passion.
