The island of Tabarca is
a unique place to visit.
It is the only inhabited
island in the Valencia
Community and is located
just off the coast of
Alicante, rather closer to
the fishing port of Santa
Pola than Alicante.
The island is very small;
approximately 1.800
metres long, and some
450 metres at the widest
point. It boasts a number
of historical buildings, many part of the efforts of King Charles III to
fortify and inhabit the island during the 18 th century. Previously the
island had served as a refuge for Berber pirates, who would use the
island as a base for raiding the nearby coast. Many of the 68 (as of the
2010 census) permanent inhabitants of Tabarca are descendents of
the original Genoese fishermen and families brought over to Tabarca
in 1770. These families had been prisoners on the Tunisian island of
Tabarka, and ransomed by King Charles III to be brought to the island
– thus the name “New Tabarca.” The Greeks and Romans called the
island “Planesia” and “Planaria” respectively, referring probably to the
flatness of the island’s geography. The island was also referred to as
“Saint Paul”, the legend being that the apostle had arrived here on
his mission to this area.
The island has two distinct
parts, the division marked
by the narrow middle
with the port on one side
and a sandy beach on
the other. The majority
of the buildings are on
the south part of the
island, whereas the north
is mostly barren. The
lighthouse, inaugurated
in 1854, was at one time
used as a prison but is
now closed to the public. The island, and the small outlying islets, La
Cantera, La Galera and La Nao, have been a Mediterranean Marine
Reserve since 1986, for the flora and fauna which abound in the
crystal clear waters.
The architectural heritage that can still be admired include the Church
of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, consecrated in 1770. The old city still
conserves a great part of the walls, and they are the object of constant
rehabilitation. Other interesting buildings include the Governor’s
House, which has been restored and converted into a hotel. The
whole island has been declared an Artistic-Cultural Heritage site,
since 1964.
The island is best reached by boat from Santa Pola, only a 30 minute
crossing, and the boat
will make a brief stop
shortly before arriving
so passengers can enjoy
viewing the fish and plants
through the glass bottom.
Once on the island, there
are many things to do. The
small village boasts some
excellent restaurants.
Please try the “Caldero
Tabarqueño”, typical fishrice
dish the island is
famous for. There are sunbeds
and umbrellas to rent on the sandy beach, or for the more
adventurous, try the rockier coves for snorkelling. You can purchase
souvenirs in one of the shops, or take a long walk completely around
the island.
On the Dragontours trip, June 6 th , we will leave very early in the
morning from the Mazarrón area, and take the boat at 11am. The
return boat will be at 6.30pm in the afternoon, so there will be a full
day to enjoy this beautiful place.
