MAY DEVOTIONS TO THE BLESSED
VIRGIN MARY
After the
crucifixion,
death and
resurrection
of Our Lord
Jesus, Mary
lived many
years before
her death.
The Roman
Catholic
C h u r c h
believes that
the Virgin
Mary “Having
completed
her earthly
life, was
assumed (Assumption) body and soul into
heavenly glory”.
of May. The last devotion on May 31 st is
often followed by a solemn procession,
during which a statue of the Virgin Mary or
a portrait is carried back into the church.
Some of the devotions may be accompanied
by pilgrimages.
Family devotions may take place within the
family, around a “May Altar” consisting
of a table with a picture of the Virgin Mary
decorated with many May flowers. The
family would pray together the rosary and
sing praises to the Holy Mother of Jesus.
What a sweet sight – most pleasing to God
– when the Christian home resounds with
the frequent repetition of praises in honour
of the High Queen of Heaven! Then the
Rosary, recited in the family, assembled
before the image of the Virgin.
It may take place on Mother’s Day, where
an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is
ceremonially crowned to signify her as
Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God.

May Devotions to the Blessed Virgin
Mary refer to the special devotions held in
the Catholic Church during the month of May
honouring the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of
May”. Since the inception, devotion in May
has become a regular part of Catholic life.
The May devotions originated in Italy in the
16 th Century, from Italy the devotion spread
to Central Europe, where daily and weekly
devotions take place during the month
