This month we have had two new walks, led
by two new leaders. Thanks to both Rick
and David for their first walks, we shall look
forward to further walks from them both.
Rick’s walk
took us to
just outside
the region of
Murcia when
we ventured
to Tazona
in Castilla
La Mancha,
only 25
minutes from
Calasparra.
We started
along a
tarmac road
before picking
up a beautiful
track which
led us to the hamlet of El Almirez. We stopped
here for our picnic lunch and a look around
the fascinating house. Rick has been here
a number of times, but had never met the
owner of the house, until today! The owner
was a Spanish lady called Victoria, who was
very hospitable and invited us in for a drink
and a look around, which satisfied the nosey
ones amongst us. Afterwards we returned
on foot to Tazona for an excellent lunch in a
local restaurant where Victoria joined us. You
can read more about this surprising and
interesting day on the Costa Cálida Chronicle
David’s walk started in Ucenda, near
Bullas. Nineteen of us set out on the GR252,
an undulating track leading to Casas Nuevas.
The snow ten days earlier meant there was
a little give in the track which meant low
impact and very easy on the feet. Firstly
passing through almond and apricot groves,
then vineyards, we headed into the Refugio
De Selva, bordering the Sierra Cambron. The
Selva stands at 1521 metres, but we were
following the track so did not venture into the
hilly bits. The walk continued through small
fields sown with cereals and being afforded
wonderful views of the Sierra Espuña and
Sierra Cambron. The track eventually crossed
the Totana/Bullas road near an abandoned
quarry. We turned for home after going a
little further where the track became a little
difficult, but with stunning views across a
deep valley with an interesting property in
it. On the other side of the road we had our
picnic, making use of several huge blocks
of marble as seats and tables. The leader
surprised everyone by serving buttered Hot X
Buns to go with their lunches! We returned
the way we came. The day remained fine, not
too hot and on returning to the cars everyone
said how much they had enjoyed the 14.9kms
walk. Well done to Jo who had been ill and
managed the longest walk she has attempted
with her dogs Honey and Gypsy, who were
exhausted at the end.
