Easter a Success
The Department of Tourism of the City of
Murcia recently announced that 50,000 people
chose to spend their Easter holidays in
Mazarrón. Most of them were concentrated
in Puerto de Mazarrón and the coastline. All
establishments, hotels and restaurants benefited
by the influx of visitors in large numbers,
many of whom own properties as a 2 nd home.
In terms of hotel occupancy, it was around
90% whereas the apartments were between
8 and 10% occupancy. Although they are still
collecting data for specific occupation in campsites,
it has been reported as being as high as
the hotels. All these tourists, together with
those owning second homes, made a positive
impact on the local economy over Easter.
Tourists spent time on the beaches and streets
and gardens of the Municipality and services
were extended to accommodate this including
refuse collection service and opening of
Museums throughout the Easter period. The
Tourist Office was able to inform visitors of
new leisure activities such as 4x4 excursions
or the turísitico train route. The perception of
Mazarrón from tourists who went to the Office
of Tourism was “good” or “very good”.
The restaurants taking part in the “Ruta de
los Menús de Vigilia” also saw outstanding
demand for their “menus without meat”. Restaurant
Guillermo II won the trophy for best
Easter menu and will receive a trophy from
the Department of Culture of the City of Mazarrón.
In addition, the winner of two dinners
at the restaurant was awarded to Pedro M.
Munoz from Torres de Cotillas for his participation
in this campaign.
Mazarrón Procession
The 4 th April procession of “Las Promesas”
went without incident, and was watched
by neighbours and tourists gathered along
the main streets of Mazarrón. Although the
early stages of the parade had a few drops
of rain, the organisers of Our Lady of Solitude
Procession, decided to continue and
within minutes the fine raindrops ceased,
giving way to a pleasant spring evening.
Cruz Guía opened the Procession followed by
Cabildo de Cofradías de Semana Santa de
Mazarrón and la Cofradía de la Virgen de la
Soledad, whose hooded penitents paraded in
black and red robes. Then a band of drums
broke the night silence for the Mazarróneros.
The third parade by the Brothers was followed
by Tomás Zamora, Cecilia Morales, Magdalena
Campillo and Andres Navarro on behalf of
the 4 guilds that make Easter Mazarrón. Behind
them were the Mayor of Mazarron, and
various councilors. The parade ended with a
large group of neighbours who had devoutly
followed the route of the procession to fulfill
their promises. Especially exciting was the
time when a singer devoted a song to Christ
in Avenida Constitucion, with much applause
from those present. Parades and processions
continued the following day in Puerto de Mazarrón
with the “procesión del predimiento”
taking place from the Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception, while Puerto de Mazarrón
hosted “Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareo”. In
