Parlez – Vous Français?<br />
Many years ago, I confess that I did an<br />
A level in French and even went on an<br />
exchange as a student, spending 3 weeks<br />
in Clermont Ferrand mingling with the local<br />
students and immersing myself in the Gallic<br />
culture. The French students must have<br />
been a little disappointed on the return visit<br />
to find out that they were twinned with an<br />
industrial district of Manchester, but if so<br />
they never let it show.<br />
Over the years, having worked all over<br />
Europe, I gradually forgot much of the<br />
French I learned, but fast forward 30 years,<br />
and all of a sudden I am having to dust off<br />
the dictionary and dredge though the vaults<br />
of my memory to deal with an influx of<br />
French rental clients!<br />
Thanks to the stuff I learnt in college and<br />
the odd online translation, I can get by using<br />
emails, and can actually write French fairly<br />
well, handling all the booking enquiries for<br />
clients in their native tongue. So I guess<br />
when they meet me at the villas, they must<br />
wonder who is this woman agonising over<br />
every word and speaking at a snail´s pace??<br />
The problem is, that where as French was<br />
once my second language, I now find that<br />
I have to go through a laborious mental<br />
process which goes from English into<br />
Spanish and then into French!<br />

Oh well, as the summer season progresses<br />
I can only get better.. but I’m now starting<br />
to get a little worried about the surge in<br />
German bookings too..because if I have<br />
to learn yet another language, it will take<br />
me all day to figure out how to answer the<br />
questions!<br />
