The Great Escape
Two years ago, Rojales resident, Dave Walsh,
looked out of his window to see two pigs on
the loose. The only people he could think
of to call were Easy Horse Care Rescue
Centre, who managed to catch one of them
and named her Penelope and successfully rehomed
her. Imagine Dave’s surprise when
two years later he looked out of his window
overlooking the Three Crosses in Rojales and
saw a lone pony at the top of the hill. Once
again he turned to Easy Horse Care Rescue
Centre for help.
Co-Founder Sue Weeding and volunteer
Miranda immediately responded, taking with
them one horse halter, ready to secure the
pony and assess the situation. Upon their
arrival, Dave was anxiously waiting at the
bottom of the hill and informed them that now
there were two. Sue and Miranda climbed to
the top of the hill, managed to catch the first
pony. The second more miniature pony, upon
seeing the capture of his friend, came out
from under the bush where he was hiding and
climbed over a small wall, desperate to stay
with his friend. Luckily Miranda was wearing
a scarf which she utilised as a horse halter.
It was established that there was nobody
responsible for the two ponies and the local
police were consulted and gave full permission
for the ponies to be taken to the centre as
neither of them was micro-chipped. Both
were extremely malnourished. The smaller
of the two, since named Cruz, had been
blinded in one eye with a sharp implement.
He had a head collar made of bail twine that
had cut deep grooves into his face. Due to
his malnutrition, he is slightly deformed
and was so full of worms that he was
struggling to breathe as they were pressing
on his small lungs. The larger pony has been
named Rocky, due to Sylvester Stallone’s
performance in the Rocky films running up
the steps, similar to the step in Rojales where
he led his little friend to freedom. We must
assume that they had escaped from a terrible
place.
They are now receiving all the medical care,
attention and love that they need to aid their
recovery. You are all welcome to come and
visit them on one of our Open Days which
are every Sunday 1-4pm. Sunday roasts are
now available with many other tasty homemade
treats including vegetarian options and
of course the very popular Horse Tour where
you can meet all our rescues and hear their
stories.
November was a busy month for us. Not
only the inevitable birthdays when you come
from a large family, but also our added 25 th
wedding anniversary. When Carol and I got
married it was a grey wet day in Scotland
and we celebrated our 25 th on a grey wet day
in Spain. Wonderful! Both days were good
though for their own reasons.
When you commit to someone or something,
at the time you are sure nothing will deflect
you from that commitment. We are human
unfortunately and we do change and life can
sometimes knock us about a bit. Peter told
Jesus he was willing to die with Him if he was
threatened, but within hours denied three
times that he knew Him.
How many of us have failed when our commitment
was tested? Perhaps we forgot what
we committed to? Perhaps remembering is
not our strong point. ..seamless link to.
We also had Remembrance Day during November,
remembering the men and women
whose commitment often puts their lives in
danger. This is good to remember because
giving up your life for someone else really is
the ultimate sacrifice.
Paul struggled with this when he wrote to the
Christians in Rome. He said “Now, no one is
likely to die for a good person, though someone
might be willing to die for a person who
is especially good, but God showed His great
love for us by sending Christ to die for us
while we were yet sinners.” Romans 5v7,8.
God’s commitment to us began, not with
Jesus being born as a baby, but way back
before we were even created, because He
knew we would need to be saved and that to
do this Jesus would have to die. Now that is
commitment and worth remembering!
Remember! Carol Service at Derek and
Lynda’s, Cehegin, Sunday December 16 th ,
4pm. Mince pies to follow.
