The first meeting of the winter season took
place on Thursday Nov 8 th . Thirty two members
met at the Deitano Semilleros in Totana, where
we were taken on a tour of the premises. The
main business is industrial scale propagation
of vegetables and herbs which are sold to
agriculturalists to be grown on in fields and
greenhouses. Seeds are grown literally by the
million, and we were amazed to be told that
every tomato seedling consists of a hybrid
variety manually grafted onto a vigorous root
stock, and that an experienced operator can
graft up to four thousand plants per day. There
is also a retail shop with a large variety of
garden plants which we were able to buy.
The second part of the visit was to the nearby
Coato which is a growers’ co-operative of some
three thousand members from the Murcia
region and other provinces which border
Murcia. Here they process almonds, peppers,
olives, honey and vegetables. Our guide
showed us the almond plant, with all the stages
from shelling to final products, including finely
ground almonds, and chopped almonds of
various grades for use in cakes, ice cream and
turron, as well as the product of the ground
up shells which is used in animal feed. Next
was the peppers department where we saw the
processes involved in milling the locally grown
peppers to produce pimentón or paprika. After
an excellent lunch in the on-site restaurant
we visited the factory shop and were also
presented with complimentary packs of honey,
oil, vinegar and paprika.
Altogether a fascinating insight into local
industry.
The next
meeting
o n
an olive
at La Majada and lunch at Bar Puente, also at
La Majada.
