The Memorial Service at the Memorial
Garden, Sector A, on 11 th November was this
year on a Sunday which clashed with our
normal Remembrance Sunday Service
in the Church. True to form an alternative
Minister was found and undertook to conduct
the Memorial Service. The traditional
service for the Ex-Services, which normally
takes place in the Church on Remembrance
Sunday, took place with the Memorial
Service because of difficulty in getting to
the Church via the broken bridge. It was not
the best Remembrance Sunday we have ever
had and I hope by next year the bridge will
be fixed and also that it will be a few years
before Armistice Day falls on the same day
as Remembrance Sunday again. Normal
services will take place next November as
usual, all being well.
On a more cheerful note, on Sunday 25 th
November, Bill Coyle was ordained a Deacon
for service in St Nicholas Ecumenical
Church. The service was conducted by Rev
Len Eaton and Rev Bro Konrad, assisted by
Rev Deacon Maureen Kent and Rev Eberhard
Klute. It is the tradition at the Church to
ordain our own Ministers and Deacons,
following our understanding of the early
Christian communities and the edicts of the
Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.) over the three
divisions of the Ministry: Bishop, Priest and
Deacon. Since St Nicholas has no Bishop,
the Minister in Charge has authority to Ordain
people for service in this Church. The service
was followed by light refreshments and a
good experience was had by all.
Christmas seems to start earlier than ever
as each year passes, but Advent Sunday on
2 nd December, is the very beginning of the
Christian year. Advent means “coming”, so we
think about Christ coming into the world at
Christmas, coming into our lives every day,
and coming to us at our death. Advent is
a time of preparation, prayer and thought
going right through to Christmas Eve and the
glorious arrival of the baby Jesus, so I would
wish you all a wonderful time with family and
friends at Christmas and I look forward to
welcoming you into the Church should you be
available for any of the services listed below.
Tucked away under the chapel at Bolnuevo
lies the Torre de Piedra Restaurant. With a
few tables set up outside, reservations are
recommended in the warmer months if you
like eating “al fresco”. However, the inside
of the restaurant is modern and stylish,
making it ideal for any occasion.
The menu del día is good value at 10-12€,
although the selection for each course
can be a little limited. Portion sizes are
adequate, and service is prompt and
friendly.
The starters on the set menu vary from
Crema de Calabacin, a delicious and
very creamy courgette soup, to seafood
salad. Being Scottish, my husband´s only
complaint was that the soup was not warm
enough, but as he is used to broth served
at 100 deg to keep him warm, getting used
to the cold / lukewarm Spanish soups has
been tricky!
Main courses are simple and typically
Spanish in that they are a “meat and no
veg” platter, so chicken fillets, fish or lamb
with French fries and a little garnish are the
norm. For the children the waitress offered
us the chance to change for burgers,
although the boys opted for lamb instead.
The best part of the menu for those with
a sweet tooth would be the desserts, and
there was a selection of several homemade
puddings on offer.
With a drink and coffee included, the menu
del dia offers a good value lunchtime meal.
Torre de Piedra opens at 1pm for lunch and
again in the evening at 7.30pm and can be
found at Calle de la Luz, Bolnuevo.
