THIRD
ANNOUNCEMENT
and Call for Abstracts
Invitation to the 4 th European IRPA Congress 2014
The European IRPA Associate Societies mandated the German-Swiss
Radiation Protection Association (FS) to prepare and host the 4 th European
IRPA Congress in 2014. In cooperation with the Association Romande de
Radioprotection (ARRAD), our French speaking colleagues in Switzerland,
Geneva was chosen as host city for this major event. The choice of the
venue was driven by the intention to involve international organizations with
a strong link to radiation protection such as ILO and WHO.
«Radiation protection culture – a global challenge» was chosen as the general theme of the
Congress in order to support the IRPA initiative fostering improvements of RP Culture globally. In
addition to offering a forum for the scientific exchange it is our intention to enable a dialogue on
important cultural elements such as values, beliefs, competencies and recommended practices.
We hope to foster a belief in the success of cultural approaches and to provide guidance to help
equip radiation protection professionals to promote a successful RP culture in their organisation
and workplace.
Welcome to Geneva, Switzerland
The great history of this city, its development and the
vision of its authorities means that Geneva blends the
many advantages of a small city with the services and
facilities of a large metropolitan area. More importantly,
Geneva’s tradition of welcoming people from all over the
world makes it a unique and privileged destination. Its
central European location and easy accessibility provide
an ideal setting for international meetings and events
such as the Congress on Radiation Protection. More than
200 international organisations are based in Geneva.
Besides its reputation as home to famous
academic and research institutions, the city
is also known worldwide for its beauty and
its breath-taking views of the surrounding
Alps and Jura.
The FS and ARRAD are pleased to invite you to this Congress highly interesting topics. It will also
provide an excellent opportunity for making valuable personal contacts, to visit CERN, one of the
world‘s leading research centres, and to enjoy impressive excursions.
Yours Sincerely,
Klaus Henrichs
Congress President
The Centre International de Conferences Geneva (CICG)
was opened in 1973. It is located close to the Geneva site of
the United Nations complex and to most other international
organisations The Swiss Government placed CICG at
the disposal of the German Swiss Radiation Protection
association for the period of the Congress. This illustrates
the traditional Swiss policy to support activities which aim
to achieve international consensus.
The CICG offers facilities for up to 3,500 persons in a variety
of lecture theatres, conference rooms, and offices equipped
with best available technology. There is adequate space for
poster presentations and a technical exhibit. The CICG also
Programme outline and provisional schedule
The broad range of Congress topics will encourage discussions of all aspects of radiation
protection culture covering ionising as well as non-ionising radiation. Seven plenary sessions will
be dedicated to key aspects of the Congress objectives and a total of twenty-seven sessions will be
arranged around the plenaries with three sessions in parallel. Oral presentations for the plenaries
will be invited or carefully selected from the submitted contributions. Each parallel session will
be introduced by an invited speaker followed by submitted oral presentations. Posters represent
an important part of the scientific programme and therefore ample time for poster viewing and
discussions among the participants and with the authors is foreseen.
The interdisciplinarity of radiation protection culture cover the scientific and ethical basis, value
judgement, regulations, practical implementation and the interaction with society.
The programme will address recent findings and on-going research on radiation biology,
tissue reactions, stochastic effects (both cancer and non-cancer diseases), the quantification of
occupational, public, and medical radiation exposures including both ionizing and non-ionizing
radiation, natural and technologically enhanced radioactivity and man-made radionuclides in the
environment, as well as all aspects of radioactive waste disposal.
Given the detrimental effects of ionizing radiation, the use of radiation and radioactivity to the
benefit of society requires an ethical basis of radiation protection, value judgement and regulations
covering the scheme of planned, existing, and emergency exposure situations as set outby the
ICRP in its publication 103.
In all exposure situations, successful radiation protection requires the practical implementation
of its principles and regulations. Special emphasis will be given to radiation protection in the
medical field. Practical implementation also includes the education of the next generation of
professionals and a world-wide harmonization of radiation protection.
Interaction and communication with society as well as fostering radiation protection will be a
focus of the programme.
Young scientist and professional award
Ensuring competence in the field of radiation safety requires the education and encouragement
of qualified professionals and trainees. The promotion of young scientists and professionals is
therefore of high importance for the European IRPA societies. To this end the societies participating
in the organisation of the Congress offer an award for the best scientific or professional
contribution(s).
National societies will be responsible for the nomination of their candidate; they are expected
to support the participation of the candidate in the Congress. The nomination of candidates
must be submitted to the IRPA 2014 Young Scientist and Professional Award Committee before
October 1, 2013. The nomination must be accompanied by an abstract, a CV and an explanatory
statement from the nominating society. The presentation will be integrated into the scientific
programme with an oral presentation of their paper at the Congress. The Young Scientist and
Professional Award Committee will elect the award winning contribution. The Young Scientist
and Professional Award Committee is free to award more than one contribution. The award will
carry remuneration. For inquiries and nominations contact the chairman of Young Scientist and
Professional Award Committee, Alfred Hefner, via e-mail: alfred.hefner@seibersdorf–laboratories.at
Welcome Reception
The Welcome Reception will be held in the early evening of Monday, June 23, 2014 at the CICG.
This will allow delegates to relax and socialise, renewing old friendships and making new ones
prior to the start of the Congress week.
Young Professionals Get Together
An informal get together of young professionals will take place at the CICG on Monday, June
23, 2014 after the reception. The Congress will encourage networking amongst young persons
by holding a reception specifically for them, allowing them also to meet some of their senior
colleagues. Interested persons are requested to tick the relevant box on the registration form.
Congress Dinner
The Congress Dinner will take place at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices (BFM), on Thursday,
June 26, 2014. The BFM is an example of the successful restoration and transformation of an
industrial site. In May 1886 it was opened as a factory to exploit the hydraulic power of the River
Rhône delivering water under pressure for use in the fountains, houses and factories of the city.
The building was decommissioned in the 1960’s when the industry moved to the outskirts of the
town. In 1988 it was classified as a historic building, and in September 1997 it became
an opera house. Today it is also open to the public for festive, promotional or cultural
events. See www.bfm.ch to get a taste of what to expect.
The Congress Dinner will be organized in Swiss Style including some local
entertainment. There will, however, be ample time to enjoy the meal and for
conversation. Since the BFM can supply seats for up to 500 people, the number of
participants will be limited. Registration for the Congress Dinner is required and will be
handled on a first-come-first-served basis.
Excursions
It will be possible for all participants and accompanying persons to book excursions before, during or
after the Congress. A dedicated registration form will be available for that purpose on the Congress
website as well as on site during the Congress. Due to the limited capacities, the CERN excursions
require registration on a first come first served basis during the online registration process.
CERN
Monday Morning and Friday Afternoon
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most
respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the
Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific
instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles.
By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws
of Nature. The instruments used at CERN are particle accelerators and detectors.
Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before they are made to
collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the
results of these collisions. Founded in 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the
Franco–Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe’s first joint ventures and now
has 20 Member States.
10 11
The Congress will allow the participants to visit CERN. There will be two possibilities, one on
Monday morning before the opening ceremony and one at Friday afternoon after closure of the
Congress. Bus transfer will be organized. Due to the limited space, participants will be asked to
register for the excursions. Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
Art Exhibition
During the Congress, an exhibition will
bridge the gap between science and art.
Textile artists from around the world have
been invited to display their artistic approach
to the theme “Radiation”. The perspective
of these artists ranges from the beauty and
aesthetic appeal of radiation to research and
technical applications without concealing the
darker sides. The ultimate challenge is how
to convert this abstract theme onto the soft
media of fabric. We invite you to take this
unique opportunity to experience your field
of work from a new angle! Enjoy!
