Airbag system components • Airbag in steering wheel. • Airbag in front of front passenger seat. • Side airbag in side of front seat backrests. • Inflatable curtain along long sides of headlining (between front and rear roof pillars). • Seat belt pretensioner for the two front seats. The airbag system supplements the protection provided by the seat belts to further enhance the safety of occupants taller than 140 cm. When the system is activated at the moment of a frontal impact, the airbag inflates and then deflates through holes in the back. The whole operation takes roughly 0.1 second, quicker than the blink of an eye. The driver and passenger airbags are socalled smart airbags. This means that the system compensates for factors such as the force of the collision. When the airbag system is activated all of the doors are unlocked while the interior/ exterior lighting and the hazard warning lights are illuminated at the same time. Note: The sensor reacts differently depending on whether or not the front seat belts on the driver’s and passenger sides are used. Situations can therefore arise where only one of the airbags inflates. It is also possible for only the seat belt pretensioners to be activated and for the airbags to remain uninflated. If only Stage I is activated at the moment of impact, Stage II will automatically be activated later to neutralise the gas generator in the airbag.

See page 40. If a fault arises in the airbag system during a journey, the airbag warning lamp on the main instrument panel will come on and the DIC will display: Airbag malfunction. Contact service. Inflated airbag (driver’s side). Inflation and deflation of airbag takes approx. 0.1 s. Both front airbags inflated The driver airbag and passenger airbag are triggered by violent front-end collisions. They will not be activated by minor front-end impacts, if the car overturns or by rear-end and side-on impacts. Two impact sensors are located on the top of the front bumper under the painted shell. These sensors register any vehicle impact at an extremely early stage. Based on this information and the central sensor in the control module, the control module determines whether airbag deployment is required. The control module also determines whether other airbag system components should be deployed: seat belt pretensioners, inflatable curtains. Which airbag system components are deployed depends on a number of factors, such as the force of the collision and the angle of impact.
