The filter traps any water in the fuel. When there is an excessive amount of water in the filter, the following message appears in DIC: Water in fuel. Contact service. Contact a workshop to have the problem remedied. We recommend that you contact an authorised Cadillac workshop. If you run out of fuel If your diesel-engined car runs out of fuel, proceed as follows: • Put in at least 5 litres of fuel. More is required if the car is on a tilt. • Start the engine as usual. • Do not touch the accelerator. NOTICE Do not run the starter motor for an unnecessarily long time if there is no fuel in the tank. This could otherwise damage the high-pressure pump. Filling a fuel tank WARNING Never fill a fuel can that is standing in the car. Static electricity from the can could ignite the petrol fumes. This can cause severe burns and damage to the car. To avoid this happening: • only use an approved fuel can • never fill the fuel can while it is standing in the car, in the luggage compartment or any other surface than the ground • make sure that the pump nozzle touches the can’s filler orifice before starting to fill it. Maintain contact throughout filling • do not smoke while filling.

If a new engine is driven too hard, this gradual process of bedding-in will not be possible and the life of the engine will be shortened. Cars with petrol engine: during the first 2000 km do not exceed 5000 rpm. Cars with diesel engine: during the first 5000 km do not exceed 4000 rpm. In addition, refrain from driving the car at full throttle, other than for brief instances, during the first 1800 miles (3000 km). Bedding-in of new brake lining The bedding-in period for new brake lining is about 150 km if the car is driven mainly in urban traffic or about 500 km for mainly motorway driving. To avoid premature wear and shortening the life of the pads, avoid heavy braking as much as possible during this period. Manual gearbox When changing gear, fully depress the clutch pedal and then release it smoothly. It is inadvisable to drive with your hand resting on the gear lever, as this can increase the wear on the gearbox. Before reverse gear (R) can be engaged, you must lift the ring underneath the gear knob. NOTICE When reverse gear is to be engaged, the car must be at a standstill with the accelerator fully released. Starting and driving Gear lever, manual gearbox 137
