134 Starting and driving
Cars adapted to run on E85
(85% ethanol)
The fuel tank holds 61 litres.
If access to E85 is limited then fuel with a different
proportion of ethanol or normal
RON 95 can be used for refuelling. The
engine’s control management system is
adjusted automatically according to the
amount of ethanol in the fuel.
When the temperature is about –10 °C or
lower a greater proportion of petrol should
be used. E85 in combination with low temperatures
could lead to the car being more
difficult to start. A slightly higher proportion
of petrol improves the cold start properties
considerably.
Drive the car for at least 5 minutes after
refuelling. For example, this is important
when refuelling with E85 after having driven
on petrol or vice versa. Driving for at least
5 minutes allows the engine’s management
system to reset itself for the new fuel mixture.
Drive calmly during this period.
During the engine’s warm-up phase
(below +50 °C) engine torque is limited
when driving with a proportion of ethanol.
Ethanol contains less energy per litre
than petrol, which is why fuel consumption
increases when driving on E85 compared
with petrol. A consequence of this
is that a tank of E85 covers fewer
kilometres than a tank of petrol.
NOTICE
Certain additives in petrol could, in combination
with ethanol, cause reduced
driveability. For this reason, refuel with a
full tank of petrol (RON 95) every
10 000 km. Use up the majority of this
before refuelling the car again.
NOTICE
If a reserve fuel can is kept in the car then
it should be filled with petrol, RON 95.
• The engine has higher torque and output
the higher the proportion of E85 that is
used.
• A larger proportion of E85 results in a
greater requirement for the use of an
engine heater in cold weather.
• When the engine is cold and the proportion
of E85 in the fuel tank is large
(above 50%) engine torque is limited in
order to avoid misfiring. The risk of misfiring
is greatest if the engine is subjected
to a heavy load at the same time. Torque
limitation is active when the ethanol content
is above 50% and engine temperature
is below 50 °C at the same time.
• E85 should be treated with the same
caution as petrol.
• E85 contains a red colouring substance.
This results in the engine oil becoming
slightly red.
