AKENG44_Escalade Page 80 Wednesday, July 16, 2008 12:22 PM Instrumentation and Controls ■ STABILITRAK ® SYSTEM This system combines antilock brake, traction and stability control systems to help maintain directional control under most driving conditions. When the system senses that there is a discrepancy between the intended path and the direction the vehicle is travelling, it selectively applies the brakes to help steer the vehicle. The system comes on automatically when you start the engine. When you first start the vehicle and begin to drive away, the Stabilitrak system performs several diagnostic checks to ensure that there are no problems. You may feel or hear the system working, but this is normal. The system should be done initializing before the vehicle reaches a speed of 32 km/h (20 mph). In some cases, it may take approximately two miles of driving before the system completes initialization. If the system fails initialization, one of the following messages will appear on the Driver Information Center display: • TRACTION CONTROL OFF • SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL • STABILITRAK OFF • SERVICE STABILITRAK The Stabilitrak Indicator Light will come on and stay on. Turn the steering wheel left to the nine o’clock position and then right to the three o’clock position. Doing this may clear the message. If the message still appears, you may need to reset the system. . . . 80

Wait about 15 seconds before restarting the engine. If the message reappears, the vehicle needs service. If neither the messages nor the light appears, the system has properly initialized and is ready to help maintain directional control under slippery road conditions. If the vehicle begins to go in a direction other than that intended by the driver, the Stabilitrak system activates. Adjustments will be made automatically to try to regain control of the vehicle. You may feel or hear the system working, but this is normal. When the Stabilitrak system activates, the Stabilitrak Indicator Light will flash. You should normally leave the system in its normal operating mode, however make sure to turn the system off if the vehicle is stuck in mud, sand or snow. See "If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck" in Section 5. It may also be necessary to turn off the system when driving in extreme off-road conditions where high wheel spin is required. Press and hold the Stabilitrak button for more than five seconds to turn off Stabilitrak and part of the traction control system. The button is located on the instrument panel to the right of the sound system. – 81 . . .
