The air bag "on" and "off" indicators will appear briefly in the passenger sensing system status bar (located on the overhead console). When the system self-check is complete, one of the indicators will stay on to indicate whether the right front passenger's frontal air bag is on or off. Sensors in the right front passenger seat and safety belt detect the presence of an occupant to determine if the passenger’s frontal air bag should be on or off. The passenger sensing system will turn off the passenger frontal air bag under the following conditions: • The right front passenger seat has no weight placed on it for a period of time or is unoccupied. • The system detects an infant in a child restraint. It is important to note that for some children, including children in child restraints, and for very small adults, the system may or may not turn off the air bag, depending upon the person's seating posture and body build. Everyone in your vehicle who has outgrown child restraints should wear a safety belt properly, whether or not there is an air bag for that person. The passenger air bag is also turned off if there is a critical problem with the frontal air bag system or with the passenger sensing system. The "off" indicator will stay on if the right front passenger's air bag is deactivated. . . . 202

See the following, later in this section, for more information: • System Operation with a Child Restraint • System Operation with Adult Passengers Aftermarket equipment, such as seat covers, seat heaters and seat massagers can affect the performance of the passenger sensing system. Avoid using aftermarket equipment if your vehicle is equipped with this system. CAUTION Keep the area under the passenger seat or between the passenger seat cushion and seatback clear of objects to allow for the proper operation of the passenger sensing system. CAUTION If the air bag light stays on or comes on while you are driving, there may be a problem with this system. Have the vehicle serviced right away.
