Transport
There is easy access to the motorway network via the A64. However,
although the East Coast Main Line and the Trans Pennine Lines run through
the area, there is no railway station at Tadcaster and only local trains stop at
Ulleskelf. The bus service centres on Tadcaster with regular services to
Leeds, Wetherby, York and Knaresborough. Some parts of the area, south of
the River Wharfe, have a limited bus service.
A number of Parish Plans have highlighted transport issues as a concern for
both young and older people.
Quality of Life
In the 2006/7 General Satisfaction Survey, a high proportion of residents in
the LS24 postcode were either satisfied or very satisfied with their local area
as a place to live.
‘Parish Plans’ produced in the area reveal that residents enjoy living in the
villages and value the peace and quiet, the countryside, the friendly
community feeling and their local family connections.
The four Parish Plans produced to date note that some villages lack a focal
point for residents
In a 2008 survey, a high proportion of residents felt that the District Council
was making the local area both cleaner and greener and a better place to live.
Surface water and domestic drainage issues were mentioned as a concern in
a series of surveys undertaken for Parish Plans in the area.
Housing
There are 2,711 dwellings in Tadcaster town; 484 of which are owned by
Selby District Council.
In Tadcaster, only 5 new dwellings were built and only 4 planning permissions
granted in 2007-8
In October 2007, there were 122 empty properties in Tadcaster.
There were 259 people on the housing waiting list in May 2008 (approximately
10% more than in 2007). The majority wanted either a one or two bedroom
property and most tended to be elderly. Only 12 Council properties became
vacant during 2007-8 in Tadcaster.
There were 14 homelessness applications in 2007-8 and the average stay in
Tadcaster’s hostel was 9 months (compared to an average stay of three
months in the Selby hostel)
A number of Parish Plans note that there is a shortage of single person and
starter homes in the area.
Selby District Council’s Draft Core Strategy presents a case for development
in the market town of Tadcaster to meet local needs and in some other
villages. It is proposed that Ulleskelf be classified as a primary village for
limited housing development. Consultation on the Core Strategy is about to
commence.
A number of Parish Plans highlight the need to retain the character and local
distinctiveness of villages in the area.
No Village Design statements have been completed yet in the area but one is
underway in Appleton Roebuck.
Community Safety
In 2007, the area had less crime and disorder (had lower levels of burglary;
theft; criminal damage; and, violence) than the District, the county, the region
and England respectively.
At a series of public Joint Action Group meetings most felt that the area was a
safe place to live in.
In the 2008 General Satisfaction Survey community safety was a priority for
residents. In some villages the fear of crime; especially of house burglaries
remains relatively high.
In 2006, surveys undertaken for Parish Plans in some of the villages identified
concerns over speeding traffic.
There is a lack of opportunities for young people in the area and, in certain
parts of Tadcaster, a 2008 consultation exercise in Stutton Road found,
youngsters have been congregating and drinking in bus shelters
Leisure
Tadcaster has its own leisure centre and swimming pool and a wide range of
sports teams.
There is no children’s play or recreational open space provision in most
Parishes in the area and under provision in the remaining Parishes.
Both Parish Plans and Parish Councils have identified a need for children’s
play areas, adventure playgrounds, and provision for youth facilities and
activities.
