We are pleased to announce that the following individuals were awarded <strong>SEIU</strong> <strong>Scholarship</strong>s for<br />

the <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> academic year.<br />

The <strong>SEIU</strong> <strong>Scholarship</strong> Program provides 15 - $1,000 renewable scholarships for up to four years. The<br />

The <strong>SEIU</strong>-Moe Foner <strong>Scholarship</strong> provides one-$5,000 non-renewable scholarship per year to honor the founder of<br />

the Bread and Roses Cultural Project of <strong>SEIU</strong> 1199 New York, who devoted his life to celebrating the lives of working<br />

people through the arts. This year’s recipients are:<br />

The <strong>SEIU</strong>–John Geagan <strong>Scholarship</strong> provides a $5,000 scholarship extended over a 24 month period to a student<br />

planning to pursue his or her interests in labor studies. This year’s recipient is:<br />

<strong>SEIU</strong>–Jesse Jackson <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

The <strong>SEIU</strong>–Jesse Jackson <strong>Scholarship</strong> provides one-$5,000 renewable scholarship for up to four years to a student<br />

planning to pursue his or her interests in social change and activism beyond college graduation. This year’s recipient is:<br />

<strong>SEIU</strong>-Nora Piore <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

The <strong>SEIU</strong> Nora Piore <strong>Scholarship</strong>, made possible by an endowment to the <strong>SEIU</strong> Education and Support Fund by the<br />

family of the late Nora Kahn Piore. The scholarship is awarded to <strong>SEIU</strong> health care members and their children who<br />

wish to pursue a career in the healthcare filed. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Piore worked as a union<br />

organizer, labor educator, college professor, health care economist, and as a health care activist who changed the face of<br />

public health in the United States. The award, renewable for up to four years, is currently set at $4,000 and<br />

administered every 4 years. The financial need of applicants is considered during the selection process. This year’s<br />

recipient is:<br />

Union Privilege / Union Plus <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

Union Privilege/Union Plus <strong>Scholarship</strong>s provides various amounts to union members across the country. This<br />

year four <strong>SEIU</strong> members’ children and one member have been awarded Union Plus <strong>Scholarship</strong>s for the <strong>2010</strong>–<strong>2011</strong><br />

academic year. These scholarships are awarded annually through the Union Plus Education Foundation with funding<br />

provided by Household Credit Card Services, issuer of the Union Plus Credit Card. Union Plus is the trade name used<br />

for Union Privilege products.<br />
