SEGF Student-Dedicated Field Course • Iberian Pyrite Belt (Continued)
STUDENT NEWS
each participant as documentation of
their participation in these field courses.
We wish to express our sincere thanks
to each of the mine and exploration staff
who supported our requests for mine
tours, and who spent time organizing our
site visits. Without their assistance and
time, such field courses would not be possible,
and we are grateful to the companies
and teams at each mine operation.
The Denver Region Exploration
Geologists Society (DREGS) provided
student support for our collective meals,
allowing students and professionals to
discuss observations and experiences in
a casual setting while enjoying excellent
local cuisine. The four professional participants
also provided additional financial
support for student meals, including
the provision of beer and wine at our
farewell dinner (giving greater impact
to their savvy commentaries).
Iberian Pyrite Belt field course participants at Avrupa Minerals-Antofagasta Minerals joint venture prospect
near Lousal, Portugal, with a diamond core drill rig in background. In addition to mine visits, exploration
approaches to IPB prospects were discussed, culminating in this final day’s visit to properties near the westernmost
known VMS prospects.
On behalf of the student and professional
participants, we would like to
offer special thanks to Borden Putnam,
John Thoms, and Vicky Sternicki for
their logistical support in making everything
seamless once again for students
and professionals—without their efforts,
the organization and implementation
of these courses would be impossible.
Finally, we would like to thank the
SEG Foundation and the donors to the
Student Field Course Fund for their
enormous and continued financial support
of this latest field course. Since
2007, when the first SEGF Student-
Dedicated Field Course was offered,
more than 150 students and more than
40 professionals have been able to visit
classic ore districts, and to do so in the
presence of professional geologists who
share with students their time-tested
experiences as economic geologists. As
instructors, we look forward to continuing
this tradition later this year, with
the next Student-Dedicated Field Course
to examine porphyry systems of southern
Peru. 1
