Mill Reconciliation by Francis Pitard

This short course is for metallurgists, metallurgical
managers, plant design engineers, process engineers,
academics and laboratory supervisors. It will focus on
sampling problems in the mill and how to overcome
them, including the reasons for disagreement between
mine and mill estimates and sampling for metallurgical
balance and process control.

uranium, copper, nickel and other species including gold.
The course is designed to provide fundamental

SHORT COURSE 3: Energy Efficient Comminution
presented by JKTech
Thursday 18 July 2013

This course will provide attendees with an overview of
established strategies for improving comminution
energy efficiency, including ‘quick wins’ and longer-term
programs. New research directions and strategies are
also reviewed. Delegates will then be provided with a
methodology for identifying opportunities for reducing
energy consumption within their own operations.
Individual action-plans can be developed and discussed,
allowing delegates to leave with a clear strategy for
improving energy efficiency in their own comminution
circuits. The workshop is suitable for company
executives, industry professionals, site managers,
site-based specialists, operators/technicians and anyone
with an interest in reducing unnecessary energy
consumption in the minerals industry.

John Canterford FAusIMM(CP), Principal, Process
Technologies Australia
John spent nearly 20 years at CSIRO ending up as Manager
of the Hydrometallurgy Section before joining Minproc (now
AMEC) in 1987 as General Manager of their Technology
Division, responsible for evaluation of processing
technologies and provision of input into a wide range of
studies and projects. John established Process Technologies
Australia in 1999, undertaking a range of development activities for both domestic and
international engineering and resource companies.

Metals, AMEC
Dean has 30 years’ experience in mineral processing
research, operations, management and consulting. His
expertise covers most aspects of mineral processing
technology. He was the Manager, Process at AMEC for two
years, Process Consultant at AMEC for six years and is now
Technical Director of Process for AMEC, Mining and Metals.
Dean’s expertise includes comminution, classification, geometallurgy, iron ore
concentration circuits (magnetite and magnetite plus hematite), scrubbing and laterite
beneficiation, mine to mill optimisation, dense media separation, mineral sands
processing, flotation, plant modelling (especially the use of JKSimMet), detailed process
review, ore characterisation interpretation, sampling, plant surveys, testing program
design and management of technical teams.
The Importance of Sampling in the Mineral
Industry
Ralph J Holmes FAusIMM(CP), Stream Leader, Carbon Steel
CSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship
Over the last 30 years Ralph has been involved largely in
mineral processing research and is currently Stream
Leader, Carbon Steel, of the CSIRO Minerals Down Under
National Research Flagship. He is recognised throughout
Australia and overseas as an expert of ferrous and
non-ferrous mineral processing and sampling mineral
commodities. Ralph received a Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award in
1998 and an inaugural Standards Award from Standards Australia in 1993 for his
outstanding contributions to the development of mineral sampling standards. Ralph also
received the inaugural Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM) Mineral
Industry Operating Technique Award in 1987 for developing Ironscan for the on-stream
analysis of iron ore.
Project Delivery
Greg Lane FAusIMM, Technical Officer, Ausenco
Greg is Chief Technical Officer with Ausenco, an
international mining and infrastructure services business.
Greg has worked in consulting, study and project delivery
roles for Ausenco for nine years and with other engineering
businesses for a further ten years. He has worked as a
process engineer, commissioning manager, study
manager and consultant on many large and small
projects, both junior and major mining companies. His
interests are both technical and relationship focussed, combining technical solutions with
delivery strategies that set projects up for success.
Geometallurgy: What do you Really Need to Know
from Exploration through to Production
Kathy Ehrig, Principal Geometallurgist, BHP Billiton
Kathy graduated with a BSc in Geology from the California
State University-Fresno in 1984 and conducted
geophysical surveys in the search of geothermal energy
resources for the US Navy in the mid-1970s to early 1980s.
She completed a PhD in Geology from the University of
California- Berkeley in 1991. Kathy worked and lived at
Olympic Dam from 1992-2006 and held various roles as
research geologist, senior research geologist, and chief research geologist.
Kathy then joined BHP Billiton in 2005 when WMC was acquired by BHP Billiton and
moved to Adelaide in 2006 as Principal Geometallurgist to lead a team of eight
geologists, mineralogists and metallurgists who developed and implemented the
massive geometallurgy program which is used to support the future expansion of
Olympic Dam.
Is Bigger Better? Building Market Resilience into
Process Plant Design
Peter McCarthy FAusIMM(CP), Chairman/Principal Mining
Consultant, AMC Consultants Pty Ltd
Peter began his career as a mining engineer at Broken Hill
and has since worked as a project manager, academic and
consultant on mining projects around the world. He has
served as a director of several public mining companies
over the last 20 years and was chairman of Unity Mining
Limited until its merger with Cortona in January 2013.
He is currently Chairman of AMC Consultants Pty Ltd and was the 2007 and 2008
President of The AusIMM and continues to serve on several committees, including his
role as chairman of the Consultants Society.

guaranteed access to the event. Upon receipt of
your registration and payment, The AusIMM will
send registration confirmation.

On-site registrants, with payment only, will be
admitted on space availability.
AusIMM MEMBER RATES
To qualify for the special rates of ‘AusIMM member’
as quoted on the registration booking form you
must be a financial (paid) member. AusIMM 2013
membership fees were due by 1 January 2013.
Non-member registration fees apply to all nonmembers
and non-financial AusIMM members.

WHAT’S INCLUDED
We welcome all overseas delegates, members,
non-members, authors, new professionals and
students to register by completing the registration
form and returning it with their remittance to
Event Management.
• Author / delegate / non-members / new
professionals / student registration
includes: attendance at technical sessions,
CD ROM proceedings, morning and afternoon
teas, lunches, conference satchel, Happy Hour
and Conference Dinner.
• A student must be currently enrolled full-time
at a tertiary institution. Proof of full-time
status must be submitted with the registration
form.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
PARTICIPANT LIST
Please note that all registered delegates will have
their name, position, company and email address
printed in a delegate list. Should you not wish to
have your details distributed please notify Event
Management as soon as possible.
CONFIRMATION OF BOOKINGS
Conference registrations will be acknowledged as
they are received with payment in full. Receipts
for registration payments will be attached to the
confirmation letter. Please check the confirmation
letter and advise of any alterations immediately.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellations of registration must be by email
only. Refunds will apply as follows:
• More than 28 days before the conference –
Full Refund
• 28 – 7 days before the conference – Refund
(less A$400 administration charge)
• 7 days or less before the conference or
non-attendance – No refund (no exceptions)
An organisation may send an alternative delegate
if registration has been paid and the registered
person is unable to attend due to unforeseen
circumstances. In such cases, Event Management
must be advised of the change prior to the
conference.
WAIVER OF LIABILITY
The AusIMM, Salamander Consulting and GAJD
Enterprises Australia accepts no liability to any
persons or body for any loss, injury or damage
howsoever and whether directly from any action
or cause whatsoever undertaken, organised or
sponsored by The AusIMM.
