<strong>Explor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Unknown</strong> 385<br />

With <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g paper, one of <strong>the</strong> most successful programs <strong>in</strong> our<br />

short history of space flight has ended. <strong>The</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i achievements have been many,<br />

and have <strong>in</strong>cluded long-duration flight, maneuvers <strong>in</strong> space, rendezvous, dock<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

use of large eng<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> space, extravehicular activity, and controlled reentry. <strong>The</strong><br />

Gem<strong>in</strong>i achievements have also <strong>in</strong>cluded a host of medical, technological, and<br />

scientific experiments.<br />

<strong>The</strong> papers have <strong>in</strong>cluded discussions of many <strong>in</strong>dividual difficulties that<br />

were experienced <strong>in</strong> preparation for many of <strong>the</strong> flight missions and <strong>in</strong> some of<br />

<strong>the</strong> flights. <strong>The</strong> successful demonstration that <strong>the</strong>se difficulties were overcome <strong>in</strong><br />

later missions is a great tribute to <strong>the</strong> program, to <strong>the</strong> organization, and to <strong>the</strong><br />

entire Gem<strong>in</strong>i team.<br />

A period of difficulty exists today <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> program that follows Gem<strong>in</strong>i, <strong>the</strong><br />

Apollo Program. Yet, perhaps one of <strong>the</strong> most important legacies from Gem<strong>in</strong>i<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Apollo Program and to future programs is <strong>the</strong> demonstration that great<br />

successes can be achieved <strong>in</strong> spite of serious difficulties along <strong>the</strong> way.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i Program is now officially completed.
