a. <strong>The</strong> White House, State Department, and Department of Defense<br />

will be kept advised of <strong>the</strong> situation by <strong>the</strong> NASA Headquarters<br />

Public Information Director or <strong>the</strong> Senior NASA Public<br />

Information Officer present.<br />

b. <strong>The</strong> NASA Mission Commentator will issue periodic releasable<br />

statements advis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> press of <strong>the</strong> situation.<br />

2. When a probability of crew fatality or serious <strong>in</strong>jury is <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong><br />

portion of Plan A cover<strong>in</strong>g family notification will be activated.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> Prime Recovery Zone Senior Public Information Officer will release<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g crew condition to <strong>the</strong> news-pool team follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ation with <strong>the</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i Information Director or his designee.<br />

CONTINGENCY SITUATION IN PRE-DESIGNATED LANDING ZONES<br />

(OTHER THAN AREA OF PRIME RECOVERY VESSEL)<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> NASA Mission Commentator will be kept current on crew and<br />

spacecraft status by monitor<strong>in</strong>g applicable circuits and/or be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

advised of <strong>the</strong> situation by <strong>the</strong> Mission Director, <strong>the</strong> Flight Surgeon<br />

and/or <strong>the</strong> Recovery Zone Public Information Officer.<br />

a. <strong>The</strong> White House, State Department, and Department of Defense<br />

will be kept advised of <strong>the</strong> situation through a conference call<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated by <strong>the</strong> NASA Headquarters Public Information Director<br />

or <strong>the</strong> Senior NASA Public Information Officer present.<br />

b. Appropriate NASA officials will be alerted to <strong>the</strong> situation by <strong>the</strong><br />

Gem<strong>in</strong>i Information Director.<br />

c. <strong>The</strong> NASA Mission Commentator will issue periodic and timely<br />

statements advis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> press of <strong>the</strong> situation.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> Prime Recovery Zone Senior Public Information Officer will release<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g crew condition to <strong>the</strong> news-pool team follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ation with <strong>the</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i Information Director or his designee.<br />

CONTINGENCY SITUATION IN OTHER THAN<br />

PRE-DESIGNATED LANDING AREAS<br />

<strong>The</strong> purpose of this section is to provide guidance and direction for<br />

Department of Defense Public Information Officers and o<strong>the</strong>r Department of<br />

Defense and NASA personnel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event <strong>the</strong> astronauts make a cont<strong>in</strong>gency<br />

land<strong>in</strong>g anywhere except <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pre-designated land<strong>in</strong>g areas.
