I. PURPOSE<br />

This program plan has been prepared by <strong>the</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i Program Office to document<br />

<strong>the</strong> Objectives of Gem<strong>in</strong>i extravehicular operation and to outl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> program<br />

for achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se objectives. It is <strong>in</strong>tended for use as <strong>the</strong> basis for overall<br />

program control and coord<strong>in</strong>ation to ensure proper implementation of program<br />

requirements. <strong>The</strong> plan will be kept current by <strong>the</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i Program Office and<br />

revisions will be issued as additional <strong>in</strong>formation is developed.<br />

II.<br />

OBJECTIVES OF GEMINI EXTRAVEHICULAR OPERATION<br />

A. General. <strong>The</strong> general objectives to <strong>the</strong> accomplished are as follows:<br />

1. Evaluate man’s capability to perform useful tasks <strong>in</strong> a space<br />

environment.<br />

2. Employ extravehicular operation to augment <strong>the</strong> basic capability<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i spacecraft.<br />

3. Provide <strong>the</strong> capability to evaluate advanced extravehicular<br />

equipment <strong>in</strong> support of manned spaceflight and o<strong>the</strong>r national<br />

space programs.<br />

B. Phase One. <strong>The</strong> objectives to be accomplished on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

extravehicular missions are:<br />

1. Demonstrate feasibility of extravehicular operation.<br />

2. Establish confidence <strong>in</strong> Gem<strong>in</strong>i systems for extravehicular<br />

operation.<br />

3. Conduct prelim<strong>in</strong>ary evaluation of man’s ability to perform <strong>in</strong><br />

free space.<br />

C. Phase Two. After completion of Phase One, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g objectives<br />

are to be accomplished:<br />

1. Conduct detailed evaluation of man’s ability to perform <strong>in</strong> free<br />

space.
