Subject: Animal Payloads for Little Joe<br />

June 19, 1959<br />

1. I am enclos<strong>in</strong>g a copy of a memorandum from <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator<br />

request<strong>in</strong>g that only American-born rhesus monkeys will be used <strong>in</strong><br />

Mercury flights.<br />

2. I understand that we have been assured by <strong>the</strong> School of Aviation<br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e that all rhesus monkeys supplied by <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> Little Joe<br />

flights meet <strong>the</strong> above requirements. However, I suggest that SAM be<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed that “birth certificates” of <strong>the</strong>se monkeys will be required at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time of each flight.<br />
