D. Hazardous, Rigorous, and Stressful Experience<br />

Applicants must have had a substantial and significant amount of experience<br />

which has clearly demonstrated three required characteristics: (a) will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />

to accept hazards comparable to those encountered <strong>in</strong> modern research airplane<br />

flights; (b) capacity to tolerate rigorous and severe environmental conditions;<br />

and (c) ability to react adequately under conditions of stress or emergency.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se three characteristics may have been demonstrated <strong>in</strong> connection<br />

with certa<strong>in</strong> professional occupations such as test pilot, crew member of<br />

experimental submar<strong>in</strong>e, or arctic or antarctic explorer. Or <strong>the</strong>y may have been<br />

demonstrated dur<strong>in</strong>g wartime combat or military tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Parachute jump<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or mounta<strong>in</strong> climb<strong>in</strong>g or deep sea div<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g with SCUBA), whe<strong>the</strong>r as<br />

occupation or sport, may have provided opportunities for demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se<br />

characteristics, depend<strong>in</strong>g upon heights or depths atta<strong>in</strong>ed, frequency and duration,<br />

temperature and o<strong>the</strong>r environmental conditions, and emergency episodes<br />

encountered. Or <strong>the</strong>y may have been demonstrated by experience as an observerunder-test<br />

for extremes of environmental conditions such as acceleration, high<br />

or low atmospheric pressure, variations <strong>in</strong> carbon dioxide and oxygen concentration,<br />

high or low ambient temperatures, etc. Many o<strong>the</strong>r examples could be given.<br />

It is possible that <strong>the</strong> different characteristics may have been demonstrated by<br />

separate types of experience.<br />

Pert<strong>in</strong>ent experience which occurred prior to 1950 will not be considered.<br />

At least some of <strong>the</strong> pert<strong>in</strong>ent experience must have occurred with<strong>in</strong> one year<br />

preced<strong>in</strong>g date of application.<br />

Applicants must submit factual <strong>in</strong>formation describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> work, sport, or<br />

episodes which demonstrate possession of <strong>the</strong>se three required characteristics.<br />

IV. MATERIAL TO BE SUBMITTED<br />

<strong>The</strong>se positions are to be filled through a procedure which requires sponsorship<br />

of each candidate by a responsible organization. An <strong>in</strong>dication of this<br />

sponsorship and a rat<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> candidate will be made on a Nom<strong>in</strong>ation Form by<br />

a member of <strong>the</strong> sponsor<strong>in</strong>g organization, preferably a superior well acqua<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> candidate. <strong>The</strong> Nom<strong>in</strong>ation Form is attached to this announcement for<br />

distribution to solicited organizations, and will be filled out by <strong>the</strong>m and returned<br />

by January 12, 1959, if at all possible, to Personnel Office (Project A), NASA,<br />

Langley Field, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia. [5]<br />

<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g materials must be submitted by <strong>the</strong> applicant himself no<br />
