Charles H. Zimmerman (1907– ) was handpicked by Robert R. Gilruth to serve<br />

on <strong>the</strong> first Space Task Group <strong>in</strong> 1958 and served as Director of Aeronautical<br />

Research <strong>in</strong> NASA’s Office of Advanced Research and Technology from 1962­<br />

1963. He received a B.S. <strong>in</strong> electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> University of Kansas<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1929 and jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> staff of <strong>the</strong> National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics<br />

<strong>in</strong> that same year. He spent <strong>the</strong> next 33 years of his life <strong>in</strong> government and private<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry develop<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g new aircraft. Zimmerman earned a master’s<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> aeronautical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> University of Virg<strong>in</strong>ia <strong>in</strong> 1954 and<br />

two years later was <strong>the</strong> recipient of both <strong>the</strong> Alexander Klem<strong>in</strong> Award of <strong>the</strong><br />

American Helicopter Society and <strong>the</strong> Wright Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Medal of <strong>the</strong> Society of<br />
