B. Symbolic articles to be taken to <strong>the</strong> moon and returned to earth<br />

1. M<strong>in</strong>iature flags (1 each) of all nations of <strong>the</strong> UN, and of<br />

<strong>the</strong> 50 states, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories—for<br />

subsequent presentation as determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> President.<br />

“All nations” has been def<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> advice of <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Department to <strong>in</strong>clude “<strong>the</strong> members of <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Nations and <strong>the</strong> UN Specialized Agencies.” <strong>The</strong>se items<br />

will be stowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LM.<br />

C. Personal Articles<br />

2. Small U.S. flags—for special presentation as determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> President or <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator of NASA. <strong>The</strong>se will<br />

also be stowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LM.<br />

3. Stamp die from which Post Office Department will pr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

special postage stamps commemorat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first lunar<br />

land<strong>in</strong>g and a stamped envelope to be cancelled with <strong>the</strong><br />

cancellation stamp<strong>in</strong>g device. Cancellation can be done<br />

as convenient dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mission <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> CM. <strong>The</strong> stamp<br />

die will be stowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LM; <strong>the</strong> stamp<strong>in</strong>g device and<br />

envelope will be stowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> CM. <strong>The</strong>se items will not be<br />

announced <strong>in</strong> advance.<br />

4. Two full size U.S. flags—which have been flown over <strong>the</strong><br />

Capitol, <strong>the</strong> House and <strong>the</strong> Senate, to be carried <strong>in</strong> CM but<br />

will not be transferred to <strong>the</strong> LM.<br />

Personal articles of <strong>the</strong> astronauts’ choos<strong>in</strong>g under arrangements between<br />

Mr. Slayton and <strong>the</strong> flight crews.<br />

With respect to all items under categories A and B above, it should be clearly<br />

understood that <strong>the</strong> articles are “owned” by <strong>the</strong> Government and that <strong>the</strong> disposition<br />

of <strong>the</strong> articles <strong>the</strong>mselves or facsimiles <strong>the</strong>reof is to be determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator<br />

or NASA. <strong>The</strong> articles returned from <strong>the</strong> mission should be turned over to a proper<br />

authority at MSC promptly upon return. In <strong>the</strong> case of Item B2, <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator<br />

has determ<strong>in</strong>ed that a reasonable number of small U.S. flags will be made available to<br />

<strong>the</strong> flight crew for presentation as <strong>the</strong>y see fit, subject to <strong>the</strong> avoidance of conflict with<br />

plans for presentation of <strong>the</strong>se flags by <strong>the</strong> President or <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator.
