four Los Angeles police <strong>officers</strong> ac- :<br />

cused of beating .Rodney G. King were,<br />

released Tuesday for use in a federal<br />

probe of possible civil rights charges ,<br />

against the <strong>officers</strong>. :<br />

Superior Court Judge Stanley Weisberg,<br />

who presided at the trial in Simi<br />

Valley, approved a one-month 'loan of<br />

the exhibits, to be returned Aug. 28. ·j<br />

<strong>The</strong> items, including videotapes and '<br />

audiotapes, the· boots worn by <strong>officers</strong><br />

the. night of March 3, 1991, and the 1<br />

batons used to beat the black motorist,<br />

were expected to- be presented to a<br />

federal grand jury. ,<br />

King's beating, recorded on an ama- ·<br />

teur's- videotape, shocked the· nation ·<br />

and led to last spring's trial of four<br />

white police <strong>officers</strong>. On April29, jurors<br />

acquitted the <strong>officers</strong> on most charges,<br />

sparking three days of deadly rioting in<br />
