Richard Riordan, a prominent<br />

Los Angeles attprney and supporter<br />

of the mayor, said that Bradley<br />

should understand that the city's<br />

business sector is "rallying around ·<br />

G~tes" and does not support any<br />

effort to remove him at this time.<br />

"It comes down to leadership,"<br />

' j;aid Rirdan. "[<strong>The</strong> mayor] has got<br />

to back off, look at the general<br />

picture and regroup. 1 thin~ he<br />

. cannot go ahead [with .a plan to<br />

.. seek the chief's removal]. I think<br />

· he would be just [putting] ·himself<br />

deeper and deeper into a hole.'!<br />

groups-the business community<br />

and the City Council-to jojn in the<br />

fight to oust Gates, the mayor and<br />

Fabiani did .not have the political<br />

support they need~d to challenge<br />

'the police chief, according to interviews<br />

with both groups.<br />

leaders and City Council members<br />

said they were not lobbied by<br />

anyone in the mayor's office on.tbe<br />

Gates issue. <strong>The</strong>y put much of the<br />

. blame on Fabiani, the 33-year-old<br />

chief of staff whose management<br />

style has won him few friends:on<br />

! Fabiani said that council mem­<br />

. hers are not siding with Bradley<br />

because they do not want to confront<br />

Gates or the Police Department,<br />

particularly with Tuesday's<br />

election looming.<br />

"We've made a lot of. effort to<br />

talk to council ·members, but.<br />

frankly a lot of .them are not :<br />

· interested in taking on .Daryl<br />

,Gates," he said. "And·the scream­<br />

'ing of a couple of council members, ,<br />

-some of whom are up for reelection'<br />

dissuade the mayor from doing<br />
