Gates renews vow<br />

to remain in office<br />

cheered embattled Police Chief<br />

Daryl F. Gates on Monday, in­<br />

. vestigators identified six more of­<br />

; fleers who were present during<br />

~.the March 3 beating of Rodney<br />

! <strong>The</strong> <strong>officers</strong> were identified in<br />

with a criminal investiga­<br />

. tion into the beating of King by<br />

: police <strong>officers</strong> after a traffic stop<br />

· in Lake View Terrace.<br />

, <strong>The</strong> <strong>officers</strong> identified in the<br />

:warrant obtained Monday were<br />

'present during the beating but<br />

fdid not actually kick or hit King,<br />

\the affidavit said. One of the offi­<br />

.cers, Tim E. Blake, was named in<br />

.a lawsuit that claims several<br />

Foothill <strong>officers</strong> severely beat 36<br />

participants at a baptismal_party<br />

in Arleta last year, accordmg to<br />

Leon Gilbert, an attorney who<br />

ftled the suit.<br />

Felony assault and other<br />

charges were filed last week<br />

against three <strong>officers</strong> seen kicking<br />

and beating King with nightsticks<br />

on a home video recording and<br />

against the supervising sergeant.<br />

· According to an affidavit filed<br />

in Municipal Court in support of<br />

a search warrant filed by police<br />

investigators, other <strong>officers</strong> identified<br />

from the videotape as being<br />

on the scene were Rolando Solano,<br />

Danny Shry, Paul R. Gebhardt,<br />

Robert J. Simpach and<br />

Louis M. Turriaga.<br />

<strong>The</strong> warrant said that. Turriaga<br />

was identified as stepping on<br />

King's legs while King was being<br />

handcuffed.<br />

One of the <strong>officers</strong> named in<br />

the affidavit on the Lake View<br />

Terrace incident acknowledged.·<br />

Monday he was at the scene of<br />

the incident but said his attorney<br />

has advised him not to talk about<br />

it.<br />

"I'd like to be able to say that<br />

almost all of us arrived as it was<br />

ending," said Simpach, a 17-year<br />

department veteran. "No one's<br />

happy that any of this happened."<br />

Simpach said he has been taken<br />

out of the field but has not<br />

.been asked to talk to a grandj1!Q'<br />

investigating the nicident. ·<br />

<strong>The</strong> District Attorney's Office<br />

is planning to present the grand.<br />

jury with evidence involving<br />

~ other police <strong>officers</strong> within the<br />

next two weeks, said Sandi GibboJ;ls,<br />

a spokeswoman for the<br />

prosecutor's office. .<br />

"Our investigation is continu­<br />

. ing, and we do intend to pursue<br />

this with the grand jury," Gib­<br />

-~~ms said. "We'~e looking at<br />

other <strong>officers</strong> who were at the<br />

scene."<br />

, Gibbons declined to say which<br />

<strong>officers</strong> will be discussed with the<br />

grand jury.<br />
