BACKGROUND<br />

• Home to several Indigenous groups<br />

• Considered to be one of the upland villages in the<br />

area<br />

• Covered by a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title<br />

• Named after a Matigsalog leaders who fought with<br />

logging companies during the 1940s<br />

• Total population of 2,879 (CPDO data)<br />

• An agricultural area of which the main products are<br />

corn and and vegetables.<br />

• Average income per family is Php47,250.00 or<br />

$1,036.18 per annum<br />

• Majority of the residents in the area are Indigenous<br />

Peoples belonging to the Matigsalog and Obu-<br />

Manuvu tribes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION<br />

The project is mainly environmental wherein the primary goal is to<br />

conserve the environment for the future generation of IPs in the specific<br />

area. The main activity will be tree planting in places within Barangay<br />

Datu Salumay which have been barren for a long time brought about by<br />

drought some seven years ago. Specifically mentioned by the<br />

community where the tree planting will take place is on a watershed area<br />

within the barangay. Before the tree planting, an information<br />

dissemination session will take place on the subject Preservation of the<br />

Environment and Climate Change. This will bring about advocacy of<br />

environmental protection to the participants. A Memorandum of<br />

Agreement (MOA) between the participating IP youth and Tribal Elders<br />

and Leaders of Barangay Datu Salumay will take place declaring the area<br />

a Mini-Protected Area for the IP Youth.

The project envisioned an environmentally<br />

conscious and responsible IP Youth which

Mini-Protected Area in Barangay Datu<br />

Salumay, Marilog District, Davao City as a<br />

symbol for the Indigenous Peoples of the<br />

area to protect and secure the<br />

environment for the future generation of<br />

IPs


OBJECTIVES<br />

• To disseminate information on the reasons<br />

for protecting the environment<br />

• To be able to plant 150 seedlings of trees<br />

within the watershed area of Brgy. Datu<br />

Salumay<br />

• To train IP youth participants the value of<br />

protecting the environment and to ingrain<br />

in them the spirit of volunteerism and<br />

community service
