Honors <strong>and</strong> Awards<br />

Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Kuchenbecker, Skirkanich Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Innovation in Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> Mechanics,<br />

presented “Touch Technology,” a description <strong>of</strong> research<br />

in haptics, at <strong>the</strong> 2012 TEDYouth conference in November.<br />

The TEDYouth conference is a day-long event that features<br />

speakers <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s-on activities for high school students.<br />

David J. Srolovitz, Joseph Bordogna Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> Science <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Materials Science <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong> Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Applied</strong><br />

Mechanics, has been named Fellow by The Minerals,<br />

Metals & Materials Society (TMS) “for global leadership<br />

in <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>and</strong> computational materials science <strong>and</strong><br />

groundbreaking <strong>and</strong> seminal contributions to fundamental<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> surface <strong>and</strong> grain boundary phenomena.”<br />

Daeyeon Lee, Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Chemical <strong>and</strong><br />

Biomolecular <strong>Engineering</strong>, is <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> a 3M<br />

Nontenured Faculty Award for his proposal, “Bubble-<br />

Derived Light-Weight Materials with High Strength<br />

<strong>and</strong> Toughness.” This award was created by <strong>the</strong> 3M<br />

Company to support new faculty in <strong>the</strong>ir path to tenure.<br />

Karen Winey, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Materials Science <strong>and</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong>,<br />

has been named a 2013 Materials Research Society<br />

(MRS) Fellow for “outst<strong>and</strong>ing contributions to <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

<strong>of</strong> polymer nanocomposites <strong>and</strong> ion-containing<br />

polymers through rigorous <strong>and</strong> insightful experiments <strong>and</strong><br />

for distinguished leadership in <strong>the</strong> materials community.”<br />

Benjamin Pierce, Henry Salvatori Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Computer <strong>and</strong><br />

Information Science, has been named Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association<br />

for Computing Machinery (ACM) for “contributions<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> programming languages <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir type systems.”<br />

Beth Winkelstein, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Bioengineering <strong>and</strong> Associate<br />

Dean for Undergraduate Education, has been named Fellow<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Institute for Medical <strong>and</strong> Biological<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> (AIMBE) for <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 2013.<br />
