Social Systems <strong>Engineering</strong> (NETS). NETS is Penn’s<br />

technically rigorous, interdisciplinary networked<br />

science, engineering <strong>and</strong> math major, which prepares<br />

students for careers at technology companies, startups<br />

<strong>and</strong> in quantitative finance.<br />

Networked Life is among <strong>the</strong> first set <strong>of</strong> 20 courses<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered by Penn on Coursera that has attracted<br />

720,000 registered students so far. “The numbers<br />

are phenomenal,” says Edward Rock (L’83), Penn’s<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> Open Course Initiatives <strong>and</strong> Saul A. Fox<br />

Distinguished Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Business Law. “People here<br />

care about teaching. To reach that many people is an<br />

intoxicating prospect.”<br />

Inflection Point<br />

Penn was among four inaugural universities when it<br />

joined Coursera in April 2012. “We’re being incredibly<br />

proactive because we view this as an inflection point<br />

in education,” says Rock. “Creating <strong>and</strong> disseminating<br />

knowledge as widely as we can is core to Penn’s<br />

mission. The Internet is where we want to be.” By<br />

February, Coursera had 62 university partners <strong>and</strong><br />

2.7 million students from 196 countries.<br />

“Our presence on Coursera will be a net positive<br />

because Penn has <strong>the</strong> br<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> great teachers <strong>and</strong><br />

researchers,” says Rock. Penn plans to add up to 12<br />
