<strong>Total</strong> <strong>mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>fisheries</strong> <strong>extractions</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>country</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong>: 1950-present, Ross<strong>in</strong>g, Booth and Zeller 259<br />

due to sprat adjustments <strong>in</strong> 1987 (Table Figure B2. Sweden‘s unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>by</strong> taxa for <strong>the</strong><br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1990s, and nearly all were due<br />

to misreported herr<strong>in</strong>g and sprat catches (Table B2).<br />

The herr<strong>in</strong>g catches were adjusted <strong>by</strong> about -206,000 t and <strong>the</strong> sprat catches were adjusted <strong>by</strong> around<br />

99,000 t, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> reductions <strong>in</strong> land<strong>in</strong>gs (Figure B1). Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2000s (2000-2007), <strong>the</strong> adjustments<br />

were about -86,000 t, and were largely due to misreported herr<strong>in</strong>g and sprat land<strong>in</strong>gs (Table B2).<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs were estimated and added to ICES land<strong>in</strong>gs statistics + adjustments to generate<br />

estimates of total commercial land<strong>in</strong>gs (<strong>in</strong> contrast to total catches). Sweden‘s‘ unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs were<br />

very low <strong>in</strong> 1950 (3,800 t∙year -1 ) and <strong>in</strong>creased slowly to <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> 1970s (Figure B2). They <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

more rapidly<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1980s<br />

to, on average,<br />

25,000 t∙year -1 ,<br />

and rose sharply <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> early 1990s to a<br />

peak of 62,000 t <strong>in</strong><br />

1998 (Figure B2).<br />

Unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs fell<br />

rapidly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />

2000s to 16,000 t<br />

<strong>by</strong> 2007. Decadal<br />

totals<br />

for<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>by</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> taxonomic entities are presented <strong>in</strong> Table (B3). The total unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs were estimated at about 1.1 million t from 1950-2007, of which 97% was unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> three major commercial species cod, herr<strong>in</strong>g and sprat (Figure B2, Table B3). Cod and herr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ated unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs until <strong>the</strong> 1990s, after which unreported sprat land<strong>in</strong>gs dom<strong>in</strong>ated total<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs (Figure B2, Table<br />

B3).<br />

Discards<br />

Discards were comprised of four<br />

components (see Methods for details) and<br />

were estimated and applied to total<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs (i.e., ICES land<strong>in</strong>gs statistics +<br />

adjustments + unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs). The<br />

total estimated discards were about 0.5<br />

million t for <strong>the</strong> entire period (Figure B3,<br />

Table B4). Discards were relatively low<br />

from <strong>the</strong> 1950s until <strong>the</strong> late 1970s,<br />
