Recreational catches of flatfishes were estimated to have been 6 t <strong>in</strong><br />

1991, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g to a peak of 88 t <strong>in</strong> 2004-2007. The estimated total<br />

recreational catch for cod were 126 t, salmon 38 t and herr<strong>in</strong>g 23 t for<br />

<strong>the</strong> period 1991-2007 (Table 10).<br />

<strong>Total</strong> Reconstructed Catch<br />

<strong>Total</strong> reconstructed catches from 1950-2007 were estimated to be<br />

4,754,544 t (Figure 6; Table 11). See Appendix Table A1 for complete<br />

time series data on all additions to catch <strong>by</strong> taxonomic group. In 1950,<br />

<strong>the</strong> reconstructed catch was an estimated 26,274 t, and <strong>in</strong>creased to a peak of 151,329 t <strong>in</strong> 1974 (Figure 6).<br />

Reconstructed catches decreased to 49,852 t <strong>in</strong> 1993, <strong>in</strong>creased to average 98,775 t·year -1 for <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> time period, and were estimated to end <strong>the</strong> time period with 110,423 t <strong>in</strong> 2007 (Figure 6).<br />

Herr<strong>in</strong>g had <strong>the</strong> largest adjustments to ICES land<strong>in</strong>g statistics, as well as <strong>the</strong> most discards, while sprat<br />

had <strong>the</strong> highest amount of unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs. ‗O<strong>the</strong>rs‘ and flatfish had <strong>the</strong><br />

highest amount of recreational catch.<br />

ICES land<strong>in</strong>g statistics report 1,211,724 t<br />

from 1991-2007, our total reconstructed<br />

catch for <strong>the</strong> same time period was<br />

1,553,914 t, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 28% (Figure 7).<br />

For <strong>the</strong> entire 1950-2007 time period,<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs, discards, recreational<br />

catches and ICES data source adjustments<br />

accounted for 7%, 6%, 0.1% and 87% of<br />

total reconstructed IUU (Table 11). The<br />

same components accounted for 69%, 30%,<br />

1% and 0.03% for <strong>the</strong> 2000-2007 time<br />

period.<br />

Herr<strong>in</strong>g had <strong>the</strong> highest reconstructed catch, 40% of <strong>the</strong> total reconstructed catch, with an estimated catch<br />

of 1,924,158 t from 1950-2007 (Tabe 12). Reconstructed herr<strong>in</strong>g catches were an estimated 7,319 t <strong>in</strong> 1950,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased to a peak of 48,720 t <strong>in</strong> 1973, <strong>the</strong>n averaged 34,562 t·year -1 for <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> time period,<br />

end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2007 at 28,003 t.<br />

Sprat had <strong>the</strong> next highest reconstructed<br />

catch, 28% of <strong>the</strong> total reconstructed<br />

catch, with an estimated 1,344,243 t from<br />

1950-2007 (Table 12). Sprat catches went<br />

through two periods of high catches, and<br />

two periods of lower catches. In 1950 sprat<br />

catches were an estimated 2,289 t and<br />

from 1950-1967 averaged approximately<br />

3,700 t·year -1 . The 1980s were <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

period of lower catches between two<br />

peaks, and from 1980-1988 sprat catches<br />

averaged 8,292 t·year -1 . From 1968-1979<br />

sprat catches <strong>in</strong>creased to average 29,094<br />

t·year -1 with a peak of 47,124 t <strong>in</strong> 1972, and<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r period of high catches,<br />

1989-2007, sprat catches averaged 44,942<br />

t·year -1 with an overall peak of 75,482 t <strong>in</strong><br />

2005.<br />

Cod accounted for 22% of <strong>the</strong> total reconstructed catch, with an estimated total of 1,048,830 t from 1950-<br />

2007 (Table 12). In 1950, reconstructed cod catches were an estimated 14,967 t, and averaged 19,410<br />

t·year -1 until 1978. Catches <strong>in</strong>creased from 1979-1986 and averaged 36,868 t·year -1 with an overall peak of
