<strong>Total</strong> <strong>mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>fisheries</strong> <strong>extractions</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>country</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong>: 1950-present, Ross<strong>in</strong>g, Booth and Zeller 133<br />

(323,414 t) of <strong>the</strong> adjustments, respectively. Flatfish and salmon had m<strong>in</strong>or adjustments made to <strong>the</strong> ICES<br />

land<strong>in</strong>g statistics, with flatfish account<strong>in</strong>g for 2% (54,866 t) and salmon 0.2% (7,414 t).<br />

From 1991-2007, <strong>the</strong>re was a total of<br />

836 t <strong>in</strong> adjustments to ICES land<strong>in</strong>g<br />

statistics. The majority of this was<br />

expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>by</strong> adjustments to cod data,<br />

which had a net <strong>in</strong>crease of 656 t.<br />

Flatfishes were <strong>the</strong> group with <strong>the</strong> next<br />

largest adjustment to ICES land<strong>in</strong>g<br />

statistics, with a total of 112 t. The<br />

group ‗o<strong>the</strong>rs‘ had a total adjustment of<br />

48 t, and salmon had an <strong>in</strong>crease of<br />

20 t. Herr<strong>in</strong>g and sprat data had no<br />

adjustments dur<strong>in</strong>g this time period.<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs were assumed to have<br />

begun <strong>in</strong> Latvia follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir separation<br />

from <strong>the</strong> USSR, and <strong>in</strong> 1991, <strong>the</strong> estimated<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs were 4,846 t (Figure<br />

3). This <strong>in</strong>creased to a peak of 21,890 t <strong>in</strong><br />

1997, and <strong>by</strong> 2007 had decreased to 13,586 t<br />

(Figure 3). The total unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

for 1991-2007 was estimated to be 248,608<br />

t and accounted for approximately 6% of<br />

our reconstructed total for <strong>the</strong> same period.<br />

Sprat had <strong>the</strong> highest estimated unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs, with an estimated total of<br />

approximately 110,000 t from 1991-2007<br />

(Table 8), add<strong>in</strong>g an additional 16% to <strong>the</strong><br />

reported sprat land<strong>in</strong>gs. In 1991, <strong>the</strong> estimated unreported sprat land<strong>in</strong>gs were 1,260 t. This <strong>in</strong>creased to<br />

11,096 t <strong>in</strong> 1997, and decreased to 6,771 t <strong>by</strong> 2007. The species with <strong>the</strong> next largest contribution to<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs was herr<strong>in</strong>g with 74,679 t from 1991-2007, which added an additional 17% t reported<br />

herr<strong>in</strong>g land<strong>in</strong>gs. Unreported herr<strong>in</strong>g land<strong>in</strong>gs were estimated to have been 2,820 t <strong>in</strong> 1991, rose to a peak<br />

of 5,866 t <strong>in</strong> 1996, and <strong>the</strong>n decl<strong>in</strong>ed to 3,361 t <strong>by</strong> 2007. Unreported cod land<strong>in</strong>gs contributed almost as<br />

much as herr<strong>in</strong>g to total unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs, with an estimated<br />

61,579 t from 1991-2007 (Table 8), but this corresponded to an<br />

additional 74% of reported cod land<strong>in</strong>gs. Unreported cod<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs were an estimated 657 t <strong>in</strong> 1991, <strong>in</strong>creased to a peak of<br />

6,556 t <strong>in</strong> 1996, and <strong>the</strong>n decreased to 3,202 t at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong><br />

time series. The group ‗o<strong>the</strong>rs‘ (total<strong>in</strong>g 1,788 t) and flatfish<br />

(total<strong>in</strong>g 1,701 t) contributed an additional 17% and 15% to<br />

reported land<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong>se two groups, respectively. Salmon<br />

contributed <strong>the</strong> least with 403 t from 1991-2007, add<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

additional 17% to reported salmon land<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Discards are comprised of four components (ghostfish<strong>in</strong>g, underwater discards, boat-based discards and<br />

seal-damaged discards), and <strong>the</strong>se were estimated to total 228,270 t throughout <strong>the</strong> time series (Figure 4).<br />

Discards were estimated to be 1,044 t at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> time series, and <strong>in</strong>creased to a first peak of<br />

6,303 t <strong>in</strong> 1974. From 1975-1994, discards averaged 3,662 t·year -1 . For <strong>the</strong> most recent period, discards<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased aga<strong>in</strong>, and averaged 5,940 t annually from 1995-2007, with a peak of 7,280 t <strong>in</strong> 2005 (Figure 4).<br />
