114 <strong>Total</strong> <strong>mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>fisheries</strong> <strong>extractions</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>country</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong>: 1950-present, Ross<strong>in</strong>g, Booth and Zeller<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs statistics were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first two<br />

decades of <strong>the</strong> study period, with over half<br />

of <strong>the</strong> overall adjustments occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

1950s (Figure 2, Table 6). These<br />

adjustments were primarily due to <strong>the</strong><br />

large proportion of cod land<strong>in</strong>gs taken <strong>by</strong><br />

Germany <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> that were not<br />

represented <strong>in</strong> ICES land<strong>in</strong>gs statistics,<br />

but were reported <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICES stock<br />

assessment work<strong>in</strong>g group reports.<br />

Herr<strong>in</strong>g and sprat also contributed<br />

substantially to <strong>the</strong> adjustments,<br />

particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1950s. From 1950-<br />

2007, adjustments to ICES land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

statistics totaled 794,052 t (Figure 2).<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs totaled 342,486 t<br />

over <strong>the</strong> 1950-2007 time period (Figure<br />

3). Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>creased from<br />

about 2,000 t∙year -1 <strong>in</strong> 1950 to a peak of<br />

approximately 16,700 t∙year -1 <strong>in</strong> 1984,<br />

<strong>the</strong>reafter decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to an average of<br />

around 7,000 t∙year -1 throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

1990s and 2000s. The greatest<br />

proportion of unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs was<br />

of cod, which represented roughly 58%<br />

of all unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs over <strong>the</strong><br />

study period (Table 3). Herr<strong>in</strong>g, sprat, flatfishes, ‗o<strong>the</strong>rs‘ and salmon represented 27%, 6%, 4%, 4% and<br />

less than 1% of <strong>the</strong> total unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> period 1950-2007, respectively. The unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs of herr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased over <strong>the</strong><br />

study period, with <strong>the</strong> highest levels <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

early 1990s (Table 7). Unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of sprat were, on average, 120 t∙year -1 until<br />

<strong>the</strong> early 200os, after which unreported<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>creased dramatically to over<br />

3,000 t∙year -1 . Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> study period,<br />

unreported land<strong>in</strong>gs of flatfishes <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

from 22 t∙year -1 <strong>in</strong> 1950 to <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

estimated level of over 1,800 t∙year -1 <strong>in</strong><br />

1994. Unreported salmon land<strong>in</strong>gs were<br />

highest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1960s with a total of 271 t for<br />

that period (Table 7).<br />

Discards<br />

<strong>Total</strong> discards of all species for<br />

Germany from 1950-2007 were<br />

estimated at 494,694 t (Figure 4).<br />

Discards were substantial throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> study period, but were highest<br />

from <strong>the</strong> mid-1960s to <strong>the</strong> early<br />

1970s with an average of<br />

approximately 15,000 t∙year -1 . Cod<br />

represented <strong>the</strong> largest proportion<br />

(56%) of discards and were highest <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 1965-1972 time period when<br />
