KEYNOTE SPEAKER<br />
CAROL J. PETERSON PROVOST AND<br />
VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS<br />
Provost Carol Peterson holds the distinction of being the first woman<br />
in a permanent central administration position in the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong><br />
Board of Regents system. She was appointed as the Dean of the<br />
College of Nursing in 1977 <strong>and</strong> promoted to SDSU Vice President of<br />
Academic Affairs ten years later. She is one of the longest serving chief<br />
academic officers in the nation.<br />
Peterson’s leadership <strong>and</strong> guidance have helped create a strong<br />
academic-based university. Throughout her career at SDSU, Peterson<br />
has aided in the creation of the Master’s <strong>and</strong> Doctorate programs in<br />
nursing, assisted with the successful transition to Division One, <strong>and</strong><br />
influenced the accreditation process. She has also worked to exp<strong>and</strong><br />
the international programs at SDSU.<br />
Dr. Peterson has received numerous awards for her work in education, including the<br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Nurses Association Distinguished Service Award in 2004, the SDSU College<br />
of Nursing Distinguished service award in 1995, <strong>and</strong> the first SDSU Woman of Distinction<br />
Award in 2001.<br />
Provost Peterson received her M.Ed in Nursing Education <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. in Higher<br />
Education, both from the <strong>University</strong> of Minnesota. She is currently a member of the<br />
American Academy of Nursing <strong>and</strong> the National Academies of Practice <strong>and</strong> serves on the<br />
SDSU Foundation’s Council of Trustees <strong>and</strong> the Governor’s Health Care Commission.<br />
DR. SHERWOOD AND ELIZABETH BERG<br />
YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD<br />
The Sherwood <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Berg award recognizes their<br />
many years of service <strong>and</strong> contributions to <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>. The Bergs established an endowment to provide<br />
research support to promising young faculty scientists.<br />
Sherwood Berg served as president of SDSU from 1975-<br />
1984. Dr. Berg’s administration created lasting programs <strong>and</strong><br />
helped to increase enrollment. During his presidency, Dr. Berg<br />
<strong>and</strong> his wife, Elizabeth (Betty), heavily influenced the<br />
internationalation of the SDSU campus. Mrs. Berg holds an<br />
honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from SDSU <strong>and</strong> is<br />
known as the unofficial First Lady Emeritus. She volunteers at<br />
the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Art Museum <strong>and</strong> is active in numerous other organizations, including<br />
the American Association of <strong>University</strong> Women, the SDSU Alumni Association, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
SDSU Foundation.<br />
EDWARD PATRICK HOGAN AWARD FOR<br />
TEACHING EXCELLENCE<br />
This award honors Dr. Hogan’s SDSU legacy by recognizing<br />
outst<strong>and</strong>ing faculty achievments in the teaching role.<br />
During his thirty-six-year career at SDSU, he developed the<br />
state’s only Geography program, served as the Coordinator of<br />
Student Academic Affairs for the College of Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences,<br />
Associate Dean of the College of Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences, Head of the<br />
Department of Geography <strong>and</strong> Assistant Vice President for<br />
Academic Affairs. He was appointed Associate Vice President for<br />
Academic Affairs <strong>and</strong> Chief Information Technology Officer in<br />
December 1999. He retired in 2003.<br />
Dr. Hogan’s accomplishments have earned him numerous recognitions, including the<br />
Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education. In<br />
1991, Governor George S. Mickelson named Dr. Hogan the <strong>State</strong> Geographer of <strong>South</strong><br />
<strong>Dakota</strong>. He is also a widely published author <strong>and</strong> talented artist.<br />

Jonathan A. Jenks, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Jonathan Jenks is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Wildlife <strong>and</strong> Fisheries<br />
Sciences. During his tenure with SDSU, he has received $8.5 million in grants & contracts,<br />
mentored fifty-three graduate students, <strong>and</strong> published 118 scientific articles. In 2003 he received<br />
the Griffith Faculty Research Award <strong>and</strong> the F.O. Butler Excellence in Research Award. In 2006<br />
he was awarded the title of “Fellow” of the Wildlife Society.<br />
College of Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences<br />
Brian A. Logue, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Brian Logue is Professor of Chemistry <strong>and</strong> Biochemistry at SDSU. His research, begun<br />
during active duty as a bioanalytical chemist for the U.S. Army, explores detection of biological<br />
warfare agents. Dr. Logue is also involved in the investigation of solar energy through dyesensitized<br />
solar cells.<br />
College of Education <strong>and</strong> Counseling<br />
William C. Briddick, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Chris Briddick is an Assistant Professor in the Counseling <strong>and</strong> Human Resource<br />
Development program at SDSU. His areas of research interest are career development, historical<br />
trends, <strong>and</strong> social issues impacting the counseling profession. Dr. Briddick <strong>and</strong> his spouse, Dr.<br />
H<strong>and</strong>e Briddick, will be honored by the American Counseling Association later this month.<br />
College of Engineering<br />
Fereidoon Delfanian, Ph.D., PE<br />
Dr. Fereidoon Delfanian began his teaching career in the SDSU Mechanical Engineering<br />
Department in 1980. He has served as ASME chapter advisor, earning the Advisor of the Year<br />
award both from ASME <strong>and</strong> from SDSU. With Department of Defense support he <strong>and</strong> his team<br />
have begun building a Materials Evaluation <strong>and</strong> Testing Laboratory that provides graduate <strong>and</strong><br />
undergraduate students educational <strong>and</strong> research opportunities <strong>and</strong> offers nondestructive<br />
testing <strong>and</strong> fatigue analysis services to regional industries.<br />
College of Family & Consumer Sciences<br />
Elizabeth Droke, Ph.D., RD<br />
Dr. Droke is a Registered Dietician <strong>and</strong> Associate Professor of Nutrition <strong>and</strong> Food Science. Her<br />
research program, which involves undergraduate, MS, <strong>and</strong> PhD students, is concerned with<br />
bioactive food components <strong>and</strong> their influence on obesity <strong>and</strong> chronic inflammation;<br />
specifically developing animal models to determine impact on bone <strong>and</strong> heart health. She has<br />
received grant funding from the USDA’s National Research Initiative, General Mills, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Governor’s 2010 Research Seed Grant Program. Dr. Droke has served as a grant <strong>and</strong> journal<br />
reviewer <strong>and</strong> evidence analyst, has published numerous scholarly articles, <strong>and</strong> co-authored a<br />
book chapter related to her research.<br />
College of Nursing<br />
S<strong>and</strong>ra Bunkers, Ph.D., RN, FAAN<br />
Dr. Bunkers is Graduate Department Head <strong>and</strong> Professor in the SDSU College of Nursing. She is<br />
a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing <strong>and</strong> serves as Contributing Editor to Nursing<br />
Science Quarterly. In 2007 Dr. Bunkers received the Pioneer in Nursing award from the <strong>South</strong><br />
<strong>Dakota</strong> Nurses Association. Her program of research focuses on the meaning of lived<br />
experiences of health. She has published articles, book chapters <strong>and</strong> a collection of poetry.<br />
College of Pharmacy<br />
Omathanu P. Perumal, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Perumal is an Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy <strong>and</strong> has more than ten years of<br />
research experience in drug delivery. His research focuses on delivering gene-based medicines<br />
<strong>and</strong> vaccines through skin using nanocarriers <strong>and</strong> physical methods. Dr. Perumal has over<br />
thirty-eight publications <strong>and</strong> fifty conference presentations to his credit. He has authored six<br />
book chapters <strong>and</strong> has filed a provisional patent. He serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal<br />
of Biomedical Nanotechnology <strong>and</strong> in 2009 was the recipient of a national research award from<br />
the Skin Cancer Foundation.<br />
DR. SHERWOOD AND ELIZABETH BERG<br />
YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD<br />
Am<strong>and</strong>a Weaver, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Am<strong>and</strong>a Weaver began her appointment as SDSU Assistant Professor in the<br />
Department of Animal <strong>and</strong> Range Sciences in 2007. In her short time here, she has<br />
brought in nearly $525,000 in grants, contracts <strong>and</strong> gifts. Her research centers on<br />
improving the process of marketing livestock, particularly beef. Dr. Weaver’s research<br />
focuses on the impact of proteins in muscle structure <strong>and</strong> their interactions to model beef<br />
tenderness. Currently, she is testing application of optical technology to predict beef<br />
tenderness with leading edge lab equipment. Dr. Weaver also demonstrates the unique<br />
ability to explain complicated meat judging <strong>and</strong> grading processes to college freshmen as<br />
well as to livestock producers. Such skill has resulted in high teacher evaluations as well as<br />
invitations to give training sessions on improving meat quality for John Morrell <strong>and</strong><br />
Company <strong>and</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Certified Beef.<br />
EDWARD PATRICK HOGAN AWARD FOR<br />
TEACHING EXCELLENCE<br />
Professor Daniel Kemp, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Kemp demonstrates incomparable zeal for teaching <strong>and</strong> learning <strong>and</strong> an uncanny<br />
ability to nurture the potential of each student. He has served in the Department of<br />
Mathematics <strong>and</strong> Statistics for thirty-two years. Throughout his career, Professor Kemp<br />
has been a creative <strong>and</strong> challenging teacher-scholar, building student learning<br />
environments of the highest quality. His courses engage students deeply <strong>and</strong> contribute to<br />
extraordinary student learning outcomes. Professor Kemp’s scholarship related to his<br />
teaching has resulted in widespread respect <strong>and</strong> admiration in the academic community,<br />
both at SDSU, regionally <strong>and</strong> nationally, reflected in numerous publications <strong>and</strong><br />
presentations. He also currently serves as Governor of the North Central Section of the<br />
Mathematics Association of America. Dr. Kemp is a faculty leader in SDSU’s Honors<br />
College. His innovative work has resulted in one of the country’s most robust series of<br />
honors Mathematics courses. Dr. Kemp is an outst<strong>and</strong>ing academic advisor, serving as a<br />
passionate faculty mentor for students individually <strong>and</strong> through organizations such as the<br />
Math Club, Golden Key <strong>and</strong> Honors College student organizations.<br />
Associate Professor Christopher Schmit, Ph.D.<br />
Dr. Schmit joined the Department of Civil <strong>and</strong> Environmental Engineering in 1998 <strong>and</strong><br />
demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to teaching excellence <strong>and</strong> student learning.<br />
His energy <strong>and</strong> enthusiasm bring technical engineering subject material to life for<br />
students. He never ceases in his efforts to measure <strong>and</strong> improve student learning <strong>and</strong><br />
serves as assessment leader in the college <strong>and</strong> department. Professor Schmit embraces the<br />
use of technology as a tool to enhance student learning. He has developed on-line<br />
graduate courses to help make higher education more accessible to place-bound students<br />
across the state <strong>and</strong> region. Dr. Schmit is a leader in the scholarship of teaching <strong>and</strong><br />
learning. He is passionate about developing <strong>and</strong> assessing teaching methods that address<br />
the needs of diverse learners. As a result of extensive involvement in numerous<br />
professional organizations, his successful teaching <strong>and</strong> assessment methods are now<br />
emulated in civil engineering departments across the nation.<br />
