Society’s Cat
Population
Continues to Grow
Mark Goldstein, DVM,
president of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with Ren
With your continued support, our expanding Campus and the growing knowledge and skills of our staff, the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA has been able to accept special cats that require an extended level of
care in order to reach an adoptable status. It’s all part of our commitment to not only save the life of every
adoptable animal, but to work with and manage those animals whose conditions are treatable. As a result of opening our
doors and our hearts to greater challenges, our cat population has increased, and some of our cats are spending longer periods
of time at our facility before finding new, loving homes.
We’ve seen an increase in the numbers of cats spending longer and longer periods of time with us for two reasons. First,
the cat population in general has increased nationwide, and the cat population in San Diego has been quick to follow that
trend. Second, those treatable cats tend to have two issues working against them – age and a medical and/or temperament
issue.
Ironically, a healthy and affectionate older cat does not have a difficult time finding his or her way into a new home,
nor does a cat with a medical or temperament issue. But when you couple these factors, potential adopters often overlook
these special felines, perhaps thinking they are taking on a responsibility they are not geared up for.
Yet the benefits of adopting an older cat are tremendous. Besides being through the rambunctious (and sometimes
destructive) kitten behaviors, what you see with an older cat is what you get. An older cat is content to sit in your lap,
bask in the sunshine and be your constant companion. And an older cat with a manageable medical condition just needs a
little, extra care - like a special diet or daily medication. Sounds just like most of us as we age!
So what is the Humane Society doing to help our longer-stay cats find their way into new homes? Representatives from
the Society’s various departments have formed a committee in order to address the problem and employ creative solutions
to help move these wonderful cats into loving homes. Over the coming months, you’ll notice a shift in our media relations,
community outreach and adoption support efforts.
The Humane Society’s Public Relations Department currently has six regular, on-going media commitments (please
see page 11 for the schedule). Whenever possible, media relations efforts for these segments will now focus on our longer-stay
cats until we can increase adoptions for this special group. In addition, you’ll see a new cat profiled in each issue
of AnimalFare (please see page six to meet Cleo!). If you’re a cat-lover, please come visit us in person to meet our featured
cats.
Our Community Programs Department is planning upcoming cat-themed classes, lectures and events, similar to what
we currently offer for the dog lovers in our community. We’re hopeful that offering cat-specific activities and events will
draw a unique, cat-loving crowd that may consider adopting one of our special cats.
Lastly, our Animal Care Department is investigating several creative ways to provide immediate and ongoing support to
adopters of our special cats, including assistance for the management of dietary or medical needs. We’re even exploring the
option of providing trial memberships for veterinary care insurance. Our ability to provide these services and resources is
only possible because of your generous support.
So if you’re thinking about adding a new pet friend to your home in 2005, consider adopting one of our longer-stay
cats. They may require some additional care and attention, but they have just as much love to give and will provide you
with affection and companionship for years to come.
As our ability and responsibility to help animals in need increases, so does our dependence on the community and
people like you. Thank you for caring and for your continued support.

Dear Friends at the Humane Society,
I wanted to share my gratitude with you for both the process
and result of adopting my kitty, Sweets. My life is much
more rich and unpredictably
exciting with this little
box-hopping, snoring,
toy-chasing, chest-laying
creature. Thank you!
Dear Humane Society,
I wanted to let you know how happy Calvin is in his new
home. He loves playing with his new brother, Finnigan, and
going to dog beach. I’m
so glad I saw him on your
to meet him – he’s perfect
for us! I want everyone to
know how much I appreciate
the time and energy
took to ensure that Calvin
found a good home.
Hopefully this picture speaks for itself as to how Calvin is
To our Friends at the Humane Society,
Our lives have changed for the better since adopting our
our little princess and we love
taking her everywhere we go.
So much so that we recently
made her a Harley Davidson
took her awhile, but she has
even become friends with our
PETCO and the Humane Society Partner to Improve Animal Welfare in San Diego County
imagine the impact $1 million can have on the care of companion animals in need in
the San Diego area. Couple this with invaluable marketing opportunities like in-store
messaging at PETCO stores and promotions at PETCO Park, and you have the
incredible gift PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. and the PETCO Foundation have given
the private, not-for-profit San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
“We are grateful to our corporate
alliances like PETCO for their recognition
of the value the San Diego
Humane Society provides to the
communities it serves,” said Mark
Goldstein, DVM, president of the
San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA. “PETCO’s landmark leadership
gift sets an example for other San
Diego-based corporations to follow
by providing critical financial assistance
to animal welfare organizations
that work every day to strengthen
the human-animal bond,” added
Goldstein.
The million-dollar gift will be
distributed over a five-year period and
will directly benefit the Society’s ongoing
animal welfare programs and
services at its facility at the San Diego
Campus for Animal Care. In return,
the Campus’ main courtyard area,
which features an animal-inspired
fountain, motivational quotations,
educational signage and a serene,
healing environment, has been named
PETCO Plaza. In addition, PETCO
will serve as a lead sponsor at each of
the Humane Society’s three annual
events and will receive recognition as
a $1 million-plus benefactor on the
Society’s donor wall.
“This partnership will ensure that
the caring, compassionate and creative
programs developed at the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA
will serve as a model as to how a
twenty-first century animal welfare
organization should be operated,”
said Bruce Hall, president and chief
operating officer of PETCO and
president of the PETCO Foundation.
“We are extremely proud to support
the noble work of the San Diego
Humane Society, and this gift further
demonstrates our ongoing dedication
to groups who share our commitment
to animal care and welfare.”
Over the years, PETCO and the
PETCO Foundation have supported
the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA through in-store adoptions,
fundraisers, contributions and sponsorships
of annual events. Last fall,
PETCO and the Humane Society
worked together to distribute more
than $35,000 to fire victims in need
of pet supplies after the October
2003 wildfires.
“This agreement is the culmination
of many years of working closely
with PETCO and the PETCO
Foundation, and we are eager to build
upon our great foundation in coming
years for the benefit of companion
animals in San Diego County,” said
Shelly Stuart, director of development
at the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA. “We are extremely grateful
for PETCO’s gift and are excited
that they have aligned with the San
Diego Humane Society in such a
major way.”
in addition to PETCO’s recent landmark
gift to the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA, the company has
a long, rich history of supporting the
Society through several annual in-store
fundraising efforts. PETCO’s “Spring a Pet”
fundraiser will again aid the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA through
donation cards sold in PETCO stores in
$1, $5, $10 and $20 denominations. Fifty
percent of proceeds raised locally will
directly benefit the care of animals at the
Society. The remaining proceeds will benefit
other local animal welfare organizations.
Look for the “Spring a Pet” promotion at
your favorite PETCO retail store beginning
March 13, 2005, or make a donation online
at www.petco.com. The promotion
runs through April 17.
Unique and Special Kitty Seeks Perfect Match –
Are You the One?
Cleo is a sweet, seven-year-old kitty
looking for a home that will appreciate
her for the special cat she is.
She thoroughly enjoys being pet, hanging
out with her people friends and taking catnaps
in the sun. However, Cleo prefers not
to be picked up or being pet on the belly.
Many cats dislike being picked up and
carried around or having certain areas of
their bodies touched. Cleo needs a home
with pet parents who will adore her for the
cat she is and respect her unique likes and
dislikes.
Due to her handling preferences, Cleo
would do best in an adult-only home or a
home with cat-savvy children 12 years and
older. Cleo does well with dogs and other
gentle cats, and while she accepts her canine
and feline friends, Cleo would also do great
as the center of attention in her new home.
So if you’re looking for a cat to shower with
love and attention (who will surely return all
that love in spades!), then Cleo is your girl!
We’re featuring Cleo in our quarterly
AnimalFare newsletter because she’s been
awaiting adoption longer than any other cat
at the Humane Society. Hopefully with a
little help from animal lovers like you, she’ll
find a wonderful home with pet parents
who will cherish and adore her and give her
the love she deserves.
Would you like to know more about
Cleo? Then read on…
Cleo’s Story
Cleo was adopted as a kitten from a
humane society in Chicago. She was raised
in several different households as an indooronly
cat where she was exposed to people
of all ages, cats of several different ages and
temperaments as well as cat-savvy dogs.
According to her previous pet parent, Cleo’s
favorite activities include spending time
sleeping on the bed and basking in the sunshine
on the windowsill.
In April 2004, Cleo’s previous pet parent
decided that she was no longer home
enough to give Cleo the attention she
deserved. She felt that Cleo was bored
and lonely and would do better in a home
where she could get more attention or have
another friendly, mellow cat to spend time
with.
While living at the Humane Society,
our medical staff discovered that Cleo was
allergic to something in her environment,
most likely her food. According to the
veterinary staff at the San Diego Humane
Society, allergies are a common problem
for dogs and cats. Pets, just like people,
can develop allergies to literally anything
in their environment. The most common
groups of allergens include inhalants like
pollen or dust, food ingredients or insect
and flea bites. Allergies in animals, as with
people, can need long-term or lifetime
management. Some animals may develop
Cleo, a sweet seven-year-old cat, is waiting for
a loving home.
seasonal allergies, while others can exhibit
year-round symptoms.
To treat Cleo’s allergies, our veterinarians
put her on a low-allergen diet. Cleo
has done very well and her symptoms have
all but disappeared. Cleo’s allergies, as well
as her handling preferences, have been
the main hurdle in getting this otherwise
healthy and affectionate cat adopted into a
new, loving home.
Hopefully someone out there is ready
to take home a special kitty like Cleo and
make her a part of the family. If you’re looking
for an extra-special, super-sweet, refined
feline friend to share your life with, Cleo
just may be your perfect match! Come meet
her at the Humane Society today!
Loud and Clear Records Donates Half of CD Compilation Proceeds
to San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
Not long after the October 2003 wildfires, Loud and Clear Records owner Brad Lee created a “best of San
Diego” compilation of local indie-rock (independent or alternative rock) bands titled “San Diego is Burning.”
Lee wanted their compilation to benefit a worthy cause and decided to give half of the CD’s proceeds to the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA. Lee learned about the variety of programs and services offered by the Society
to the public through a friend who worked at the Society.
“I have always been an animal lover, particularly dogs,” said Lee. “Not being able to adopt all the dogs in need
of homes myself, I figured this was one small thing I could do to help take care of them.”
In August 2004, the Humane Society received $700 from the CD’s release party. Loud and Clear Records
plans to make future donations to the Society now that the CD has received national recognition.
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA thanks Brad Lee and Loud and Clear Records for their support!
Ask a T r a i n e r
KITTY WARS
Q: How can I get my two new kittens
to get along? I adopted Willow, an eightweek-old
female, from another local shelter
and Bulls Eye, an eight-week-old male,
from the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA one week later. Although Willow
is a female, she is much bigger than Bulls
Eye and picks on him constantly. I love
these two little kittens and just want them
to love each other too. Please help!
Scott
A: You have a very typical problem
on your hands – two kittens testing each
other to establish themselves in their new
home. Even though Willow has only been
there one week longer, she probably feels
like the “queen of the castle” and wants
to make sure Bulls Eye knows that too!
Fortunately, there are a few things you
can do to integrate your new furry friends
safely and happily:
• First, provide positive reinforcement
whenever they are peacefully sharing the
same space – give them a few tasty kitty
treats or just calmly praise them and let
them know what good kitties they are!
• Another helpful way to introduce
new cats to each other, young or old, is
by “scenting.” Rub Bulls Eye with a towel
and then let Willow eat near the towel.
You can even put Willow’s food bowl
right on top of the scented towel. Scent
is a very important way for cats to get to
know each other and to “mark” their territory.
This is a positive way of helping that
process along a little.
• Height is really important to cats
when they are establishing their territory.
Provide them with cat trees they can
climb to check things out, or as a safe
escape if some “alone time” is needed.
• Lastly, one litter box per cat is
the rule of thumb for happy multi-cat
households. They won’t have to compete
with each other or worry about being
“ambushed” while taking care of business.
The San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA offers great classes and workshops
each other’s company and not driving one
Editor’s Note: During a follow-up call
with Scott, he reported that Willow and
Bulls Eye are doing great and are now the
best of friends!
In general, most
rabbits don’t like
being held and
carried around.
BUNNY BLUNDERS
Q: We just adopted a new bunny
and are really surprised at how much he
dislikes being held and carried around.
When we try to pick him up, he kicks his
legs and struggles. Are we doing something
wrong?
Anonymous
A: Rest assured that there is nothing
wrong with you or your new bunny.
What you are experiencing is very typical
rabbit behavior. In general, most rabbits
don’t like being held and carried around.
Many people think they do and really
want to hold and cuddle them because
they are so soft and cute! You have a very
normal bunny problem on your hands.
Here are some helpful tips for getting on
good terms with your new rabbit:
• Try putting your bunny’s cage on
the floor and let him come out when he
wants to. You should just sit on the floor
near the cage and wait for him to come to
you. If he’s in the mood, he might climb
into your lap for some cuddling and petting.
It’s better to let him sit on your lap
and enjoy each
other’s company
than to pick him
up and carry him
around.
• Cages that open
from both the top
and side, rather than the front, are
ideal. This allows you to open the top for
cleaning and feeding while leaving the
side open so your bunny can come and
go as he pleases so he doesn’t feel like you
are reaching in and invading his space.
We sell this type of cage in the San Diego
Humane Society’s retail store.
• Keep in mind that unlike cats and
dogs, rabbits are prey animals in the wild,
so their natural instinct is to hide. They
tend to be a little defensive by nature and
it’s important to understand and respect
this. Provide your bunny with a variety of
hiding places, or “dens,” in his cage.
• Make sure an adult always supervises
any interactions between your bunny
and children. Children in particular may
want to pick up rabbits and carry them
around. This could be unsafe for the child
and the bunny. An adult should always be
the primary caretaker for any animal.
• Lastly, if there is ever a sudden
behavior change with your rabbit, take
him to a veterinarian that specializes in
caring for small animals. Rabbits are very
good at masking injury or illness. With
any behavior change, it’s always best to
rule out medical problems first before trying
anything else.
Best of luck with your new bunny!
In Memoriam
Gifts from wills and trusts help to ensure that the Society’s charitable programs serving people and animals will be available long into the
future. The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA wishes to acknowledge, in memoriam, recent gifts from the following individuals’ estates
Your Enabling Gifts… Each and Every Donation Counts!
As a nonprofit organization that receives no public funding, the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA depends on the generous
and faithful gifts of our friends. Without your support, we simply
could not accomplish what we do. Every gift is important to us.
We are indebted to our volunteers who provide their time,
energy and expertise. These gifts are valuable, and we cherish them.
There are other gifts that are equally important to us – monetary
gifts that provide for the animals left in our care, support community
programs, help the Humane Society fight animal abuse and
neglect and further other mission-related needs. These gifts include
regular contributions, special giving and planned gifts.
Regular Gifts
Last year the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA received
more than 30,000 individual contributions from people who support
our ongoing work. These cash gifts comprise the backbone
of our donor support program, and we depend on them to meet
our daily obligations. For the most part, these gifts come out of a
person’s monthly income, and we are extremely grateful for each
and every gift we receive.
Special Gifts
As a growing and expanding organization, the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA periodically seeks to raise additional
please detach and mail the form below
funds for building maintenance and other special projects and
purposes. For example, last year the Ellen Browning Scripps
Foundation funded a new van for the Pet-Assisted Therapy program.
While the number of donors making special or major gifts
may be smaller than the number of regular donors, these generous
gifts are extremely important to the Humane Society’s ability to
serve the people and animals in our community.
Ultimate Gifts
These gifts are in a class by themselves. They are sometimes made
during a person’s lifetime, and sometimes upon death, as in the case
of a will bequest. Bequests can be in the form of a cash gift, or they
can involve non-cash assets such as real estate, or other estate assets.
An ultimate gift calls for careful planning and usually requires the
assistance of professional advisors. Gifts in the ultimate category
represent a smaller but highly committed group of donors. These are
our Humane Heritage Circle members, and we are pleased to recognize
them on a donor board located in our main lobby.
We value and appreciate every single one of our donors, no
matter what category of gift they give. The health and effectiveness
of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA depends on all of
them! To learn more about making a planned gift to the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA, please complete the form below, or
call Shelly Stuart, director of development, at (619) 243-3410.
Please send free information about leaving a bequest to the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA Hosts Animal
Law Enforcement Training Academy
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA hosted the
Animal Law Enforcement Training Academy at the San
Diego Campus for Animal Care September 20 through
October 1, 2004. The two-week long academy, held in cooperation
with the State Humane Association, is required for all individuals
in California pursuing careers in humane law enforcement. This is
the first academy to be held in Southern California in four years.
“As San Diego grows, so does the demand on humane law
enforcement officers,” said Agent Mike Griffin, a humane officer
with the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. “Hosting
the academy is a big step toward building a core group of highly
trained and skilled humane law enforcement officers to protect San
Diego’s companion animals.”
The Animal Law Enforcement Training Academy provided 80
hours of instruction, devoting 46 hours to humane law education
and 34 hours to animal care training. Many students also enrolled
in a Police Officer Standard Testing (POST)-certified Illegal Animal
Fighting class that provided studies into dog and cock fighting.
“It was an honor to host this esteemed academy and to know
that students will use the knowledge they learned here as a foundation
for careers as humane officers,” said Zachary Shalit,
manager of the Investigations Department at the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA. “Moving forward, graduates can enjoy
a challenging and rewarding career in the field of animal welfare.”
The next humane academy is slated for August 22 through
September 2, 2005. For more information about the academy or a
career in animal law enforcement, please visit www.sdhumane.org
