Assessing Behavior:
Learning to Understand
our Animals

In this issue of AnimalFare you will read about a special dog named Precious and how our Veterinary Medicine
Department was able to treat her medical issues through surgery, treatments and tender loving care. Our medical
team not only performs specialized surgeries and treatments, but gives each pet a basic medical examination, noting
any medical issues adopters should be aware of prior to placing the pet for adoption.
While medical examinations give us a greater understanding of our pets from an overall health standpoint, we also
utilize another tool to help us paint a picture of a pet’s behavior traits: Behavior Assessments. A Behavior Assessment,
or BA, is an added building block in the overall evaluation of a pet’s adoptability and brings us additional insight into
the type of home where each individual pet will thrive.
At the San Diego Humane Society we perform Behavior Assessments on all of our dogs, puppies, adult cats and
any kittens that have special needs. These species and age-customized assessments are extremely important in
assessing not only the behavior traits of our pets and the best type of home for them, but also in determining whether
a pet is safe for our community. The Behavioral Assessment process has helped contribute to our success in building
a near 90 percent adoption rate for all animals that come into our care as well as a three to four percent adoption
return rate, which is much lower than the national average of approximately 20 percent.
For a dog, the BA consists of several steps in which specially trained Humane Society staff members place the
dog in a series of “real life” situations and record his reactions and behavior both in type and on video. By placing an
animal in these situations, the assessment can reveal behaviors that otherwise may not be displayed in the normal
day-to-day shelter setting, but could possibly be expressed in normal home situations. An assessment may take from
fifteen to forty-five minutes or longer, depending on the individual animal. Behavior Assessments are performed after
a dog has had several days to adjust to the shelter setting and can sometimes be re-performed if it is determined that
a particular dog needs more time to feel comfortable.
Just as blood work can show areas where a pet’s health is abnormal or in need of treatment, a BA can show us areas
where a pet’s behavior is in need of improvement, or at least warrants a second look. For a majority of our pets, the BA is
not a determining factor in whether or not they are released for adoption, but just another step in building an overall
picture of what environment the pet is best suited for and how the pet is likely to behave in their new home.
As a veterinarian, one of the many things I have learned is to treat the patient and not their laboratory work. This
is why we do not use breed, age or size as a determining factor in a pet’s adoptability, but rather we treat each pet as an
individual, examining their behavior without bias brought on by stereotypes. Appearances can be deceiving: for example,
we’ve seen traditional family dog breeds whose spirited personalities make them best for adult-only homes, while we’ve
had other so-called “aggressive” breeds whose sweet natures made them a great fit for any type of environment.
We have a near 90 percent save rate for a reason—because we know that there is a great home out there for our pets,
we just have to know enough about them to help them find it. It is thanks to support from animal lovers and community
members like you that we are able to take the time and effort to find the right environment for each of our pets.

Hello, my name is Edana and this is my story:
I am 10-years-old and recently lived at the
Humane Society for six months before I met my new
family. Although I do miss the adoring staff at the
Humane Society, I was looking for a home where
I could be in charge. One day I met some humans
that seemed to enjoy my trademark “chattiness.” So
I jumped down, purred loudly, rubbed on their legs,
and it seems they took the bait! When I arrived home I found they had another feline
who loved to talk and a huge backyard with lots of plants to nibble on! Thanks for
helping me find such a wonderful home.

We adopted a beautiful guinea pig named
Connie (now Bronwyn) from the San Diego
Humane Society in June 2006 and wanted
to let you know how much we love her. We
saw her on the website, fell in love and just
had to meet her in person. At three-pounds,
she was the prettiest, and biggest, guinea pig
we had ever seen! After holding her for less than a minute, I knew she had to join our
family. She and our neutered male guinea pig, Brody, fell madly in love and are now
inseparable. When she’s not cuddling with Brody, she loves looking at herself in a
little mirror mounted on the outside of their pen. Our experience at the Humane
Society was great – we would definitely adopt from you again.

Medical Staff Treat Dog with Three Injured Legs
Whether they’re repairing a torn ligament,
treating a chronic upper respiratory infection,
or performing a routine spay or neuter, the
veterinary staff at the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA are committed to making every animal that
comes through their doors happier, healthier, and ready for
adoption. For some pets, treatment may be simple – perhaps a
dietary adjustment or dental cleaning. But for others, like a sixmonth-old
Maltese mix named Precious, the road to a healthy
adoption can be much longer. Fortunately, our dedicated
medical staff is there to help.
Precious came to the San Diego Humane Society suffering
from a broken front leg she incurred after leaping from a
family member’s arms. Humane Society Senior Veterinarian
Dr. Jim Babbitt, who treated Precious, says that this injury is
not uncommon to see in small dog breeds.
“Precious was suffering from a radius and ulna fracture in
her left front leg,” explains Dr. Babbitt, “meaning that both of
the bones in her leg had fractured just above the ‘wrist’ joint. In
smaller dogs with thin bones, this type of break can occur from
ordinary everyday activity, such as jumping down from
the couch.”
Precious’ family took her to their veterinarian, who advised
surgery to repair the break. However, as is too often the sad
reality for many pet owners, the family lacked the financial
means to treat Precious’ injury. After being relinquished to the
San Diego Humane Society, veterinary staff examined Precious’
broken leg and determined that she would not need surgery
after all and could be treated by simply placing her leg in
a cast.
After casting the leg, all seemed to be going well for Precious
as her bones began to heal. However, more problems were just
around the corner. When Precious first came to the San Diego
Humane Society, she was visibly limping, which the
veterinary staff attributed to the broken leg. Yet, as the break
began to heal, her walk was still strained, and Dr. Babbitt grew
concerned that Precious was suffering from Medial Patellar
Luxation (MPL) in her rear legs, also known as “loose knees.”
“Her limping from the broken front leg had masked the
symptoms of MPL in her rear legs,” Dr. Babbitt explained.
MPL is another condition frequently seen in small dog
breeds. A congenital condition, MPL is the result of structural
abnormalities in a dog’s knee joint. In more serious cases of
MPL, the dog will be unable to extend the affected leg. So
Precious, who was experiencing severe MPL symptoms,
would refrain from using her hind legs whenever possible,
balancing her weight on her front legs when she walked.
Once her front leg fracture was completely healed, Precious
underwent surgery to correct the MPL in both rear legs. The
complicated surgery, involving many modifications to the knee
joints, was done at the San Diego Humane Society. Such an
extensive surgery would be uncommon at most shelters, but at
the San Diego Humane Society, hip repairs, tumor removals
and even orthopedic surgeries can all be done for animals in
our care in the facility’s state-of-the-art medical suite.
After her MPL surgery Precious recovered quickly. Part of
her rehabilitation included getting plenty of physical therapy
through frequent walking to strengthen her legs, which had
atrophied from lack of use. “She was so sweet and cuddly that
it was hard to resist picking her up and carrying her,” says
Veterinary Technician Karen Eckoff, “but she needed to
exercise her legs a much as possible, so we had to encourage
her to walk.”
True to her name, this sweetheart charmed all the medical
staff that worked with her during her stay. “She really was
precious,” said Veterinary Assistant Heather Hanson. “I’m so
glad we were able to help her.”
Thanks to the care and efforts of the San Diego Humane
Society’s medical staff, this “precious” little girl jumpstarted her
new life on four healthy legs. And thanks to the support of the
community, the San Diego Humane Society’s medical team will
continue to provide happy endings for adoptable pets for years
to come.
A Happy Ending For Precious: After her recovery, Precious (now Winnie) was
adopted and is a happy and active young pup. Her adopter Amber Bedford
says that she’s “looking and feeling better everyday” and is “a joy” to have
in her life.

After the fires, thousands of people were faced with the reality that
their homes were gone and with them, everything they owned. Many
pet owners, including those who were evacuated from their homes,
were in need of basic pet supplies and others had incurred pet-related
expenses for boarding their pets or treating them for fire-related injuries.
With pet supplies and money to help compensate for their pet-related
costs and/or losses, the Humane Society’s Fire Relief Pet Assistance
Program has provided many of these pet owners with much needed
help during these tough times. And for those who are still in need, funds
continue to be available for pet-related fire expense reimbursement.

Survival of the Fittest
An Animal Rescue Story
One can only imagine the fear Barry the cat must have felt as fire
raged through the mobile home park in Dulzura where he had taken
refuge. Several days after the park burned down, Barry was found
by Humane Society rescuers hiding in a drainage ditch. Rescuers
surmised that the ditch most likely saved his life by protecting him
from the heat and flames
Three months later, Barry was a world away from that devastation,
sleeping on tufted cat beds in a jungle-themed room in the Humane
Society’s adoption gallery. The only lasting signs of Barry’s tale of
survival were some darkened areas near his ears where he had been
burned and an injured tail. After an amazing journey from refugee
to retiree, this affectionate 10-year-old was ready to find a home. On
January 26, 2007 Barry did just that when he was adopted after his
new pet parents saw his survival story on television.

Not Just “Big-Boned”: Spotting Obesity in Your Dog
Q: My friends say that my dog is
too heavy, but I’m not so sure – how
do I know if my dog is overweight and
whether or not I’m feeding him too
much?
– Concerned in Coronado, Calif.
A: Your question is a common one
among dog owners. The most frequent
nutritional problem I see in dogs is simply
a problem of “too much.” Obesity is an
epidemic among dogs in the U.S.; some
studies have proposed that as many as
50 percent of our dogs are either obese or
overweight. A dog is defined as obese if it is
20 percent or more over its ideal weight.
When a dog is overweight, he is
more prone to a variety of health issues
including premature joint and bone
degeneration, diabetes, and skin and
haircoat issues. Many overweight dogs also
suffer from a decreased enjoyment of things
they previously loved.
I often hear the comment “my dog is
not fat!” because it’s difficult to assess our
companions with unbiased eyes. Also, since
so many of our dogs are overweight, many
people view chubby pups as “normal.”

should be an obvious indentation behind
A Note on Weight Loss in Cats
While I have offered tips on helping our
canine friends reach their ideal weight,
obesity in cats is also a very serious and
very common problem. Be sure to set aside
time for active play to ensure that your
kitty gets some exercise. You can also try
elevating his food; this will help make sure
that he eats only when he is truly hungry.
Plus, he’ll get in a little exercise jumping
up to reach the bowl. However, it must
be noted that cats have a very unique
metabolism, and weight loss efforts in this
species should be attempted only under a
veterinarian’s supervision.

Ideal Overfed Obese
the ribs when he is viewed from above or
the side. If the dog’s outline goes straight
back from the ribs to the hips, he is overweight.
If he has a “reverse” waistline, he
is obese.
While hormonal imbalances, such as
Hypothyroidism, or lack of exercise can
cause weight problems, the vast majority of
dogs are overweight simply from eating too
much. Owners often make excuses by
classifying their dog as one of the following:
1. “The Nibbler” has food in front of
him all day. He may only take in small
amounts at a time, but it adds up to too
much. If he is under-stimulated, he may be
nibbling as a result of boredom.
2. “The Beggar” has learned to make
a fuss so his owner will feed him special
treats – “my dog needs his cookies before
he will go to bed.”
3. “The Good Pet” gets his owner
to reward good behavior with food. This
probably started with good intentions, but
has lost effectiveness because the pet is
rewarded for routine, normal behaviors.
4. “The Gourmet Pet” is fed a diet
consisting mainly of special treats, usually
human foods (similar to “The Beggar”).
So what do we do to help our dogs
lose weight? First, consult your
veterinarian. Determine a starting
weight as well as his ideal weight.
Small dogs can be easily weighed at
home with your bathroom scale. Weigh
yourself, then pick up the dog for a
combined weight. Weigh larger dogs at
your veterinarian’s office.
Next, decide on a feeding schedule.
Most people have more luck if they feed
their dogs a scheduled amount one or
two times per day. Remember, you should
determine the amount to feed your dog
based on what he should weigh rather
than what he currently weighs. While
specifically formulated, low-calorie “diet
foods” work well, any food will work if you
simply feed less of it.
Exercise is also very important. Leash
walking is certainly the easiest and
probably the most effective tool for weight
loss. While it can be difficult to increase
their activity level initially, as they lose
weight, usually their enthusiasm for walks
increases. There is an FDA approved dog
weight loss medication, but it should only
be used with dogs who are grossly obese
(33 percent or more above their ideal
weight) as determined by your veterinarian.
In short, much the same as with you
and I, there are no short cuts to weight
loss. Reducing calorie intake and increasing
exercise is the only real answer. Look
at any diet program for your dog as the
beginning of a lifetime of healthy habits
and not just a short-term solution.

s Home-Schooling at the Humane Society
Home-school children participating in the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA’s newest education program,
Home-School Thursdays, learn about Finley the three-legged
dog. In addition to Finley, the children met a guinea pig
named Piglet and a Bearded Dragon named Taz while
learning lessons on animals and their habitats. This
popular new program is offered on the third Thursday of
each month at the San Diego Humane Society. For more

s Practice Makes Perfect
Having a dog that won’t come when called is not only
frustrating to pet parents, it’s also dangerous for their
dogs. Participants at the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA’s January 26 Really Reliable Recall workshop
learn what it takes to have their dog come when called
anywhere and anytime. The Really Reliable Recall
workshop is a one and a half-hour session dedicated to
working on just your dog’s recall skills. Really Reliable
Recall is offered on a monthly basis at the San Diego
Humane Society. For more information, see the Calendar
of Events on page 19.

Feline Festivus Brings Merry Meows
In November and December 2007, many local shelters including
the San Diego Humane Society were at capacity with cats. In an
effort to find homes for more than 100 feline friends by the end of
2007, the Humane Society kicked off December with an impromptu
adoption event called Feline Festivus. Thanks to community support,
gift baskets for adopters and the waiving of Buddy Adoption Fees,
Feline Festivus made Humane Society history as one of the Humane
Society’s most successful adoption events to date. During Feline
Festivus 42 cats found new homes and more than 120 cats went home
during the month of December!

s 30-Pound Cat Finds Love and Hope in
His New Home
When Chip arrived at the Humane Society, staff
could see right away that he was in need of a diet. At
30-pounds, Chip was so overweight that he couldn’t
jump up or walk more than a few feet without
collapsing. However, despite his medical concerns,
Chip made an immediate impression on volunteer
Lauren Palazzo. Chip’s name is now Meatloaf and
Lauren says she’s “just crazy” about this “funny guy”
who enjoys his daily brushings, being carried around
like a baby and snuggling. Meatloaf is not only
happier in his new home, he’s also healthier too.
Meatloaf now weighs 27 pounds (a 10 percent
decrease!) thanks to Lauren’s tender loving care.
Meatloaf’s veterinarian says it may take him two
years to safely lose 10 more pounds, but Lauren is
just happy that they are on their way to “a healthier
Meatloaf.”
s Holy Cow!
ARR Helps Remove Cow from Culvert
On November 5, 2007 the call came in to the San Diego
Humane Society’s Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR) that a
cow had become stuck in a culvert in Jamul. The cow,
Violet, was a beloved pet who had escaped her pen the
evening before and had gone wandering eastbound along
Route 94. With the help of ropes, harnesses, a chain and a
flatbed truck with a boom, our ARR was able to free Violet
and send her home to her family.

Picking Up the Pieces
After the funeral, the two
surviving children went to work
sorting through the papers of
their deceased father, trying to get a
handle on his financial situation. They
discovered three things:
1. Their dad, a retired human
services worker, had accumulated
remarkable wealth through conservative
investments and frugal living;
2. Their dad had been generously
supporting several charitable
organizations;
3. Their dad had left behind no will
or other instructions to guide them in
the distribution of his estate.
Faced with this situation, the
children decided to give a portion of
their inheritance to the organizations
their father had supported during his
lifetime. They had to make assumptions
about which organizations to help, how
much he would have wanted to give, and
in what proportions.
Not knowing his wishes made a tough
time tougher!
This is just one of several thorny
issues the surviving family faces when
a loved one dies without a will. In the
midst of sorrow and time pressures,
difficult decisions must be made. How
much better it would have been had the
father taken the time to create a will.
Having an up-to-date and valid will
is one of the greatest gifts anyone can
give family members.
