A Paw Step to Celebrate!

Chinese proverb states, “The journey is the reward,” and I couldn’t agree more. In my ten years at the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA, I have joyfully, and sometimes tearfully, watched our organization take step after
step, paw after paw, on the path of contributing to a more compassionate society. In our last issue, I discussed
the many paw steps we’ve taken to get to the place we are today, helping more animals and people than ever before in
our 130 year history. Now, I’d like to take a moment to share with you where we are heading.
When we extended our services to Oceanside and Vista more than a year ago, we made a heartfelt commitment to
touch more human and animal lives on a deeper level. In the past year we have completed over $300,000 in renovations
to our North Campus on San Luis Rey Road. We’ve helped more children experience the human-animal bond first hand
by introducing our successful Animal Adventure Camp to the Oceanside and Vista communities. We’ve also added a
mobile veterinary facility and a full-time veterinarian to treat more injured animals.
Caring for and finding homes for the animals we love so much–including lost or stray animals–is a very special part
of who we are. Yet our organization also does so much more to enrich animal and human lives in our community. A
sample of other services that we provide include humane education for youth and adults, animal cruelty investigations,
Pet-Assisted Therapy and a variety of specialized training courses for companion animals and their owners to contribute
to a positive environment and healthy society.
In support of the many growing programs resulting from our expansion with the North Campus, I’m thrilled to announce that
we now have entered into a long-term agreement to lease an additional property less than a mile away from our existing location
on San Luis Rey Road. Positioned on Airport Road, this new, additional location provides approximately 30,000 square feet of
much needed space to house our increasing number of stray animals and expanding programs in North County.
Fulfilling the promise, “together, we can do more,” this new location is the first step of many to leveraging the success
we’ve had with our Gaines and Sherman Campuses in central San Diego to the communities of North County. The
location on Airport Road will become the public animal campus in North County, which will eventually look and feel very
similar to the Gaines Campus. Our existing location on San Luis Rey Road will become more like our Sherman Campus,
a safe haven for animals with special needs and a place to house animals transferred from other humane societies and
municipal facilities within and outside of San Diego County.
When the Gaines Campus first opened its doors to the public in September 2003, a famous reflection by Mahatma Gandhi
was written on its walls: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” The
San Diego Humane Society has molded its beliefs around this concept for over a century and has put this concept into practice
in a variety of ways. For example, housing adoptable animals in comfortable apartment-like habitats versus traditional kennels
demonstrates that animals should not only be treated humanely, but loved and cared for as part of our families as well.
The design of the Gaines campus, with its modern medical and behavioral resources, benefits the animals profoundly
as they wait to be adopted. Moving forward, our expanded location in Oceanside will similarly provide a safe, comfortable
and enriching environment for stray and relinquished animals and more space to serve and help educate the community.
It is only by your support that the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA continues to grow and expand its positive
impact. From the bottom my heart, thank you for believing in us and continuing to support our vision: to inspire and
engage the community to end animal suffering. We can’t do it without you! Please tune into our 14 th Annual Telethon
happening on CBS 8 KFMB-TV on Sunday March 6 th and call in!

Thanks San Diego Humane Society!
I have always been a bunny person so when I
saw Lonnie, the little grey dwarf rabbit in the
Bunny Cottage at the North Campus, I just had
to have him as a companion. He is such a great
animal! He lives in a double-decker cage with a
pen attached to the front and gets daily romps
through the living room. I think he’s letting me
live with him instead of the other way around.
He may act entitled, but he shows his appreciation with lots of snuggles and kisses.
Thanks so much for giving both of us a better life!

Dear San Diego Humane Society,
Last month I adopted Chloe (formerly Beezy) from the North
Campus. I had never adopted a kitty before, but was ready
to make the commitment and decided that a cat would be
best fit for my lifestyle and living situation. I did quite a bit
of research before I met Chloe and knew as soon as she came
down from her perch to meet me that she was special. Chloe
now spends her days hunting her favorite stuffed mouse,
having her belly rubbed, following me around to make sure
she’s “in the know” and taking naps by the window. She has been such a delight and
I’m so glad she is a part of my life. I think she feels the same way.

Hi San Diego Humane Society,
We wanted to let everyone know; don’t pass up the
opportunity to adopt a senior dog! When we felt ready
to adopt, our first stop was at the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA. Lucky for us, Leasha, a 12 year old
American bulldog/lab mix was available. After spending
only a few minutes with her, my son knew she was the
one. Leasha has been with us for about six weeks and
she has settled in so well with our family. She loves
wandering in her new yard and watching the birds fly
by. Her favorite sleeping spot is under the piano in
the living room. She is far more playful than we ever
thought she’d be at 12 years. It is the most amazing feeling taking a senior dog home;
you can feel their immediate gratification and unconditional love.

Serving San Diego County since 1880, the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA provides vital services to
animals and people alike. With campuses in both central
San Diego and Oceanside, the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA’s programs include sheltering and adopting
animals, investigating animal cruelty and neglect, rescuing
animals in emergency situations, providing positive
reinforcement behavior training for adoptable and owned
animals through public training classes, providing adult and

The San Diego
Humane
Society’s Foster
Care Program
is a nurturing,
rehabilitating and
often life-saving
program for baby
animals, mothers with
litters, animals with
minor medical needs or
those needing special
attention.
With dedication and passion, 73 special
volunteers open their homes and hearts
to provide vulnerable animals the support
they need until they are healthy or old
enough to be adopted.
While animals cannot use words to
communicate, they have a language all
their own. With one glimpse at a dog’s
tail, you can tell if he is excited, calm or
afraid. The look in an animal’s eyes is
very expressive, often showing just how
much he trusts and loves you. Animal body
language, from a cat resting in a cubby
hole to a 100 pound dog trying to squeeze
onto your lap, says, “I feel
comfortable with you”
or “I need some space.”
Like people, animals
feel a range of emotions,
including pain. They
cannot use words to
tell you what exactly is
wrong, but sometimes,
it’s easy to see.

At a Wal-Mart store in Oceanside, a
customer heard an odd squealing noise
in the parking lot. Beside a dumpster
in a cardboard box, he discovered four
8-day-old puppies and brought them
to the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA North Campus. Hungry, thin, cold
and dirty, they were covered in filth.
Sick and weak, their feet, tummies,
and noses had sores and ulcers. The
pups were immediately bathed, fed
and examined by a veterinarian, and
transferred to our Paws Nursery for
overnight care while awaiting an open
foster home the next day.
Karen Kelley has been the Foster
Care Supervisor for the San Diego
Humane Society for almost five years.
She began fostering Jeff, Nick, Drew
and Justin when they were 9-days-old.
By 3-weeks-old, almost all of their sores
had healed, and they were steadily
gaining weight. As a result of aroundthe-clock
care from our Foster Program,
Jeff, Drew, Nick and Justin developed
into healthy pups. With resilient and
loving personalities, it wasn’t long before
they all found new homes.
Foster volunteers often talk about a
special kind of resiliency in their foster
animals. The smallest of animals, who
come into our care so helpless and
fragile, can thrive with just a little love.
“Every day, they say ‘thank you’ with
their eyes,” commented Liz Johnson,
Volunteer Coordinator at the North
Campus, who worked with Foster
Parents in Vista and Oceanside for more
than two years.
At our North Campus, four kittens
came in as strays and were immediately
placed into the home of long-time foster
parents Karen and Ben Russell. They
were bottle-fed every few hours for
three and a half weeks and nurtured
until they were old enough to become
available for adoption. Karen said, “It’s
such a joy to witness their growth and
see their different personalities emerge.
My children and husband love being a
part of this – we all do.”
Hippity, a 4-year-old bunny featured
on the cover, came into our foster
program after being attacked by a
dog. He was in shock when he was
carried through the doors of our North
Campus, with four broken ribs and
possible pulmonary contusions. Hippity
spent weeks recovering in our Medical
Department and was then fostered
by Kevin Rooten. For two additional
weeks, Kevin provided Hippity with
extra one-on-one attention and
socialization, remarking that after all
that Hippity had gone through; his
gentle and affectionate personality was
truly amazing.
Hippity was in fact so amazing that
we chose him as a candidate for our Pet-
Assisted Therapy program. Now healthy
and thriving, Hippity currently visits
patients at hospitals, nursing homes,
children’s centers and more, raising
spirits and brightening days with his big
heart. He will complete his Pet-Assisted
Therapy service in six months and then
become available for adoption.
Acting as a liaison between the foster
parents and the Humane Society, Karen
Kelley provides volunteers with the
necessary training, supplies and support
needed to care for their foster animals,
including food, bowls, bedding, toys,
litter, medication, and any veterinary
services. Being a Foster Volunteer is a
rewarding and fulfilling task, requiring
Foster puppies Nick and Drew complete their last
health check at 8-weeks-old.

Animals may transition through three
different sets of homes and foster
parents during the first eight weeks of
their life. First comes the Neonatal stage
(0 days-2 weeks), which requires 24/7
monitoring, weighing, bottle-feeding and
cleaning. During the Transitional stage
(2-4 weeks old), animals require feeding
and frequent monitoring by their fosterparents
every 4-5 hours. By the time
animals have reached the Socialization
stage (4-8 weeks), they require 2-3
feedings per day, plenty of attention,
physical and mental stimulation
and play time with people and their
littermates.
Each person who works or volunteers
at the San Diego Humane Society
believes in second chances. While our
Foster Volunteers donate more than
5,000 hours of service per month, there
is always more that can be done. If

Q: I want to make sure I keep up
on the health of my animal between
veterinary visits. How do I conduct a
basic routine health exam at home?
A: While there is no substitute for a
professional veterinary examination to
assess your pet’s health, there are some
things that you can monitor at home. You
can be alert to health concerns by being
aware of what is normal for your pet,
and observing when there are deviations
from the norm. Below is a list of areas
that can be evaluated by a pet owner at
home.
Activity levels: Activity levels can
vary throughout the day due to a variety
of factors. You probably know if your
active dog is not quite as energetic, or
if your calm kitty is agitated. These
changes are often clues that your
pet is not feeling well and are worth
investigating.
Attitude: When you call your dog,
does he or she come running as usual?
Or perhaps your usually independent
pup is suddenly velcroed to your side?
These subtle changes are ways your pet
is communicating to you how it feels.
Eyes: Older dogs and cats will
occasionally have haziness to the eyes
that may or may not be problematic.
Squinting without exposure to bright
lights, redness to eyelids or “whites” of
the eyes, excessive tearing, or increased
amounts of mucous in the eyes are all
red-flags.
Ears: Your pet should not cry out
when you touch the ears. If you are able
to look at the ears, inspect the ear flap –
the skin should be soft and pliable. There
should be no odor, discharge, “dirt,”
“wax” or dark granular material in the
ears.
Heart and lungs: Is your cat or dog
able to sustain an activity or do they
limit their activity and need to take a
rest? Dogs pant often and it is considered
normal, however, this is not normal in
cats. How fast or slow the pet breaths
can give clues as to how healthy the
heart and lungs are. It is very helpful
to know what your pet’s normal resting
heart and respiratory rate are. To do this,
wait until your pet is resting comfortably.
Count each time your pet takes a breath
for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. This
will give you the number of breaths per
minute. You can count your dog or cats
heart rate in a similar manner. It is
easiest to feel the heartbeat along the
bottom part of the chest, just behind the
front legs.
Skin: Check for changes in fur color
or quality and any spots of missing hair.
Run your hand through the fur checking
for mats, burrs, foxtails, or sores of
any kind. Part the hair and look at the
skin for redness, sores, hair loss, dark
granular debris (flea dirt) or live fleas.
Another good tool is to run you hands
over every part of your pet periodically.
Note any changes – are there any lumps,
bumps or swellings that were not there
before?
Muscles, joints and nerves: Watch
for limping, swelling, or asymmetry to
the limbs. Check your pet’s body fat. An
ideal body condition is usually described
as “being able to feel the ribs, but not
able to see the ribs.” You can also weigh
your pet regularly, with every 2-4 weeks
being a good time interval. Keep a log of
weights and watch trends over time.
Reproductive: Check for swelling,
discharge or foul odors. None of these are
considered normal.
Abdomen: This area is normally soft
and non-painful to the touch. Grunting,
reluctance to walk, assuming a “praying”
posture with the front legs extended and
the rear end elevated could be signs of
pain or discomfort. More obvious signs
of tummy problems are poor appetite,
refusing to eat, and diarrhea.
Urination and defecation: Is there
any straining or pain evident when your
pet tries to urinate or defecate? Are the
stools normal in size, color, shape and
consistency? Are the volumes of urine
being passed consistent (especially
important for male cats)?
Noting changes in these areas does
not give you enough information to
diagnosis your pet, but it can go a long
way to helping you determine when you
need to seek veterinary advice.

s Furry Felines Find “Furrific” Families!
s Madison…New Year, New Home
s Not Your Run of the Mill Piggies!
s ‘Tis the Season to Socialize!
We are thrilled at the many successful adoptions that
took place during the recent two-month long cat adoption
campaign this past November and December. Many long
time residents and frisky young kittens found loving homes
to call their own. If you are one of those homes, we thank
you and we hope you are enjoying your new feline family
member. Cats provide us with love and entertainment that
is unique to each and every one of them. Here is an update
about some friendly felines who found a family to share in
that love…
Poppy: “When Barbara and I brought her home, we
loved her so much! She likes to play in boxes!”
Sammy: “Adopting Sammy was life-changing. She adds
so much joy to my life and is such a great companion. We
are taking the class “Living Happily Ever After with Your
Cat” at the San Diego Humane Society and both of us are
learning so much! Next we will be taking “Clicker Training
for Cats.”
Pearl: “My daughter saw Pearl on your website and
brought me to meet her. We fell in love at first sight. I was
so impressed by the level of medical care she was provided
at the San Diego Humane Society. My husband is currently
in a care facility and looks at Pearl’s picture every day. He
can’t wait to come home soon and meet our newest family
member!”
Madison knows that patience is a virtue! 388…
that is how many days it took for Madison to meet the
family of her dreams. After more than a year at the
North Campus, she of course became a staff favorite.
After many months at our North Campus, she made
her way to the PetSmart Adoption Center in Oceanside
where she could show off her true beauty to the many
customers who shop there daily. Her new family has
this to say, “Madison has adjusted beautifully to her new
home from the moment she hopped out of her carrier.
She is very sweet and affectionate and the most playful
kitty we’ve ever had. We just adore her!”

Our Pet-Assisted Therapy guinea pigs love to be
pampered! Every month they are scheduled for the
Guinea Pig Wash ‘n’ Dry, treating them to a day of nail
trimming, shampoo, and a blow dry. These little guys are
the superstars of the P-AT program, so they better look
the part. Visiting around 50 organizations each month,
they must always look their best.
Our four-legged special guests put on their holiday best
and were escorted by their two-legged companions to an
evening of holiday celebration and volunteer appreciation
at our Volunteer Appreciation and Holiday Doggie Café.
Party guests were entertained by music from Forecast,
enjoyed Muttique discounts, scrumptious treats and a
winter wonderland photo shoot.

Sandi Hoffman of Carousel Kids ‘n Digs of
Vista, rolled in a wardrobe full of doggie jackets to
the North Campus just in time for the holidays.
Our big and little guys have been sporting the
winter wear in various patterns and styles. Not
only does it keep them cozy and warm, but they
are quite fashionable. We have the best dressed
dogs in town!

“My Furry Valentine” Finds Homes for 253 Animals… and Still Counting!
An Unexpected Circle of Life
There are plenty of things to love about
animals: the way they live in the present
moment with absolute joy, their ability
to kiss your tears or calm your fears, or their
resilience and loyalty. The delight they find
in the littlest things–a sock, something that
squeaks, a good belly rub.
But what we probably love most about our
furry friends, we can’t name or see.
It’s something we feel…this readiness and
unlimited capacity to love. Even if they are shy
or if they have been lost, abused or abandoned…
you can see it their eyes. At San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA there is so much love in the
eyes of every animal, of all shapes, personalities,
and sizes, looking for somebody to share their
heart with.
As of press time, a total of 253 animals found
new families and homes during our first ever
“My Furry Valentine” adoption promotion, which
celebrated the human-animal bond with a reduced
adoption fee of $14 from January 4 – February
14, 2011. We’d like to thank our community for
making this adoption campaign so special.
At San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA there is so much love in the
eyes of every animal, of all shapes,
personalities, and sizes, looking for
somebody to share their heart with.
Molly and Barkley were just two of the many
animals who found love after many months in
our care, waiting a new home in our Adoption
Gallery. It had been a long road for this bonded
pair, who couldn’t even bare to be separated when
one was undergoing medical treatment. Their
first visit with the San Diego Humane Society
began in September 2008, when their owner was
having medical issues. Molly and Barkley were
Rich and Ann Whitley shop at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s retail store,
Muttique, before bringing Molly and Barkley, their newest family members, home.
adopted out 3 months later, only to be returned in April 2010 due to
Barkley’s many health issues. After nine more months of medical
treatment, tender care and lots of love from the San Diego Humane
Society staff and volunteers, Molly and Barkley finally found a new
family to cherish! During our “My Furry Valentine” promotion, the
Whitley Family of Ramona, CA fell in love with Molly and Barkley
and welcomed them as true members of the family. Today, they are
doing great and couldn’t be happier.

companions. Although the promotion
includes a reduced adoption fee, the
screening and qualification process
is still followed to help find the
perfect match for the animals in our
care. We look forward to more happy
adoption stories as the Valentine’s
Day promotion comes to a close.

when you least expect it. Such was the
case when Scott Brummitt met his new
best friend at the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA 11 years ago.
Scott had visited the Humane Society intending
to adopt a kitten, but an adult cat by the name of
Peter had other plans for him. From the moment
Peter bounded happily into his arms and started
up a chorus of purrs, Scott knew that he would be
the perfect companion. Right from the start, they enjoyed a deep bond that only
grew stronger with time.
Sadly, well into his golden years, Peter passed away this winter. Just a day
after his passing, a storm rolled in and lightning downed three large trees near
Peter’s memorial garden that Scott had carefully constructed in the yard. And
just like that, another wonderful opportunity presented itself where it was least
expected. As Scott chopped up the
eucalyptus trees for firewood, an
idea dawned on him: the wood could
be sold and the money donated to
the San Diego Humane Society in
Peter’s name.
To show his heartfelt
appreciation for the Humane
Society’s work, Scott sold boxes of
kindling for $5 each and shared
Peter’s story along the way. Before
he knew it, over $600 was raised!
Thanks to Scott’s resourceful
fundraising approach in honor of his best friend Peter, many more companion
animals will benefit from the Humane Society’s vital programs and services.
