president’s message
The Ties that Bind
Mark Goldstein, D.V.M.
President of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
I
can always speak on both the human-animal bond and to the affect that animals have had on my own life and the
role they have played in my family. However, I am still constantly in awe and inspired when I hear stories of these
special creatures that form bonds with us and how they can change our lives.
Such was the case when I met Teri Simas and her daughter Lizzy.
The Simas’ story starts when nine-year-old Lizzy, who has multiple
health issues, had to enter the hospital in 2001 to undergo a series
of hip surgeries. At the time they had a Bassett Hound named
Samantha who had been Lizzy’s constant companion and who was
adopted from the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
During her stay in the hospital, Lizzy was also visited by another
Lizzy: a West Highland White Terrier therapy dog. According to Teri,
this little dog was the highlight of Lizzy’s stay and was in fact so
instrumental in her hospital recovery that at one point when Lizzy
had to be resuscitated, Lizzy the dog was immediately put into her bed to encourage her to fight on. Teri fully
believes that it was this dog that helped to keep her daughter alive.
When Lizzy returned home, in a full-body cast, she was
enthusiastically greeted by Samantha. In the living room,
turned hospital suite, Samantha jumped up onto Lizzy’s bed,
and continued to snuggle with her during the difficult weeks
of her recuperation.
Though Samantha the Bassett passed away last year, the
Simas family has welcomed several new dogs into their home
including two that have a very special bond with their youngest
daughter – Suzy Q, a Westie, who was brought home in honor
of the dog that made such an impact on Lizzy, and Mallery, a
Golden Retriever who is a certified seizure response dog and who
accompanies Lizzy wherever she goes since she was diagnosed
with epilepsy.
As you’ll see in this issue’s cover story on Pet-Assisted Therapy, Lizzy is one of many people who have come to
depend on the love and bond that these wonderful animals provide us with everyday. Thank you for your support
and for helping us to continue to make programs like these available.
From the Mailbox
Dear Humane Society,
We wanted to let you know that Shorty is
doing great. He loves to go on car rides no
matter the distance, and I have never seen a
dog love a bed as much, stretching and wiggling
over every inch. He is one of the family now, he
races through every room of the house with the
speed of an agility dog. He is the perfect match
for our family.
Thanks a bunch,
Dear San Diego Humane Society,
We adopted “Sierra” now “Tilly” this weekend
and have to say she’s a perfect fit for our family.
She has settled in well and is keeping us busy.
I would like to thank the foster family that took
care of her. I was surprised at how well rounded
she was for such a little kitten. She is growing
everyday – she is almost four pounds now! She
thinks she owns the house, but really, she owns
our hearts.
Thanks,
To Humane Society Staff,
Jem is doing great! She is very friendly
and interactive with us. We moved her
cage into our bedroom when we were
getting work done on her new cage and
she loves it so much I don’t think she will
let us move it out. She loves broccoli and
carrot tops, but she absolutely loves
yogurt chips – they are the first things
she eats out of her bowl. She’s also very
curious and enjoys running around the
house every chance she gets!
Pet-Assisted Therapy Delivers Animal Companionship

c o v e r s t o r y
Two times each day. Seven days a week. Rain or shine.
This is how often volunteers with the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s
Pet-Assisted Therapy (P-AT) program
take pets out into the community to visit
people in need of some tender and
loving care from animals. The program,
which began more than 30 years ago,
visits children, adults and seniors living
in hospitals, care facilities, rehabilitation
centers and classrooms all across San
Diego County. In one year, this amazing
program and its volunteers will bring the
joy of animal companionship to over 550
facilities and more than 10,000 people!
Studies have shown that animals
have positive physical and emotional
effects on people, especially in the type
of care settings the P-AT program
frequents. In fact, animal visitation
in nursing homes has been found
to lower patients’ blood pressure, lift
the spirits of the residents, as well as
increase the sociability of Alzheimer’s
patients. Similarly, studies have found
that children’s levels of distress during
physical examinations were lower when
a companion animal was present in the
room. Amazingly, the animals and the
memories they foster can bring many
individuals out of depression and help
them reconnect with others.
“For the people we visit, having an
animal there makes them focus on the
present moment and often brings back
memories filled with positive emotions,”
said P-AT program volunteer Karen
help you connect with those who have
lost their ability to speak.”
Many of the facilities that participate
in the P-AT program have patients that
are disabled or sick and require care. For
these individuals, visiting with a P-AT
pet gives them a sense of empowerment
when they are able to cuddle and provide
love to animals that so thoroughly enjoy
their attention.
“When the animals come to visit,
the residents are so happy,” said Jessica
Halbert, Activities Director for the Kearny
Mesa Convalescent Hospital and Nursing
Home. “All of our residents are former
parents and it’s hard for them because
their children now have to nurture them,
so it makes them feel good to be able to
nurture and comfort the animals.”
Pet-Assisted Therapy program
coordinator Judith Eisenberg selects
social rabbits, guinea pigs and rats from
the Humane Society’s pool of adoptable
animals to participate in the program.
The rats and guinea pigs participate in
the program for one year and rabbits for
six months before they are “retired” and
made available for adoption. The program
also makes use of certified therapy dogs
and cute and cuddly adoptable puppies
and kittens for one-time visits. These
visits help in socializing the puppies and
kittens while providing an abundance of
smiles to the participants.
“I once went to a day facility for non-
English speaking Russian seniors and
Kees. “In addition, the animals can also brought a Collie puppy. That little puppy
in All Sizes
Therapy visit.
was the light of their day!” said P-AT
volunteer Karen Kees, who has been
volunteering with the P-AT program
for two years. “We couldn’t communicate
with each other, but it was easy to understand
the expressions of happiness.”
Kittens and puppies often come on Pet-Assisted
Therapy visits to receive socialization with facility
residents who also benefit from the interaction.
Volunteers are an integral part of
the P-AT program, transporting the
animals to over 51 different locations
each month. Once they arrive at their
destination, the volunteers bring out the
animals to interact with the facilities’
residents. Guinea pigs and rabbits sit
inside baskets to make them easier to
pet and the inquisitive rats can be found
anywhere from a volunteer’s apron pocket
to a resident’s shoulder. The kittens and
puppies wear harnesses and leashes
and sit in the laps of the older residents
or play with the children on the floor.
Certified therapy dogs can often be seen
cuddling with residents or performing
tricks during the hour-long visits.
Love Comes in All Sizes: Pet-Assisted Therapy Delivers Animal Companionship
(continued from page 5)
“The structure of the Pet-Assisted
Therapy program makes me feel
helpful because there’s always
something to do,” said Pet-Assisted
Therapy volunteer David Carr, a one
and half year volunteer veteran with
the program. “I love that I can be of
service to others and interact with
animals at the same time.”
The program receives financial
support from generous individuals and
community groups, and charges only
nominal fees when visiting for-profit
facilities. Last year, a grant from the
Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation paid
for a new P-AT program van used to
transport volunteers and animals to and
from their visits.
Of course the true magic of the P-AT
program is in how the animals are able
to bring people together while simultaneously
bringing a special kind of joy to
One group that felt the call to help P-AT animals were the students of the
SAVE (Stop All Violence Everywhere) Club at Los Penasquitos Elementary School.
When the group learned about the work Pet-Assisted Therapy animals do for
people in the community, they decided to raise money to sponsor Muriel, one of
the P-AT rabbits. By recycling cans and bottles, the SAVE Club was able to raise
the $60 necessary to cover the care of Muriel’s six month stay in the program.
Pet-Assisted Therapy Coordinator Judith Eisenberg was so touched by the group’s
efforts that she brought Muriel to the school one day so the children could meet
the rabbit they had worked so hard to support!
people unable to have pets of their
own. Animals and the bond we share
with them are a vital component of
the interconnectivity that makes up
our daily lives. For many people who
can not have pets of their own due to
circumstance, the animals and
volunteers of the Pet-Assisted Therapy
program can help fulfill this need
for more enriching experiences.
Adoptathon 2006 – A Huge Success for Animals!
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
extended its hours and held a number of
festivities during the Adoptathon 2006
weekend, June 9, 10, and 11. In the end, 82
animals – including cats and kittens, dogs and
puppies, and a rabbit – went to new, loving homes!
Our neighbors on the San Diego Campus for
Animal Care, the County of San Diego Department
of Animal Services, sent over 20 animals home over
Adoptathon weekend, for a grand total of over 100
adoptions for the entire campus!
This annual event, aimed at finding homes
for hundreds of wonderful adoptable animals, is
part of the Humane Society’s effort to bring people
and pets together and raise awareness about the
importance of adopting pets from animal welfare
organizations.
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
extends a special thank you to all of our generous
sponsors who provided refreshments and a festive
atmosphere throughout the weekend, including
Einstein Bros. Bagels and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.
Thank you also to all the dedicated Humane
Ask a Trainer
Bark-O-Rama
Q: When our three-year-old neutered mixed breed
is on a leash, he has a barking attack anytime he sees
another dog; he goes nuts! Once he is near the other
dog he is fine, but just seeing a dog sends him into a
barking mania. In your opinion, what method is best
for resolving this problem?
– Seeking a Solution in San Diego, CA
A: Thank you for your question. As always, with
behavioral changes, or with potential reactivity or aggression,
I recommend you take your dog to the veterinarian to rule out
any medical problems. If the dog is not feeling well, he may
be more protective of himself, especially around other dogs.
The likely cause of the “barking mania” you described is
barrier frustration. In this case, the tension on the leash is the
barrier and may be triggering frustration, fear, or anxiety,
causing the dog to become anxious or feel trapped by the
leash. This type of frustration can cause a dog to respond with
“aggressive” kinds of behavior.
A dog can experience more than one feeling at a time, and
become conflicted. He may be excited and want to interact
with the other dog, and then become frustrated that he
cannot go to it. This may result in barking and lunging.
These behaviors can persist if the dog continues to feel
frustrated while on the leash. The dog may even begin to
anticipate this unpleasant routine
associated with initially seeing the
other dog, or even with hearing another
dog’s collar jingle. The dog then can
become conditioned to react this way
and he is likely to react more quickly
each time.
Fortunately, we can change how
the dog responds in these situations,
using positive reinforcement training
and behavior modification methods.
Teaching the dog to walk with you so he does not lunge or
pull on leash is necessary for preventing barrier frustration
and other problems. Establishing a strong foundation in leash
walking before working around other dogs or distracting
environments is essential.
I recommend you take a private lesson or a private
behavior consult with one of our behavior trainers. We can
see your dog and show you how to perform proper leash
walking training and how to use humane equipment like a
SENSE-ation harness. Until we meet with you and your dog,
When dealing with
any reactivity or
aggressive behaviors,
having a behavior
trainer work with you
is a great start.
it is best to avoid situations that may trigger your dog’s
barking. For now, take a vacation from walking your dog
where he might see another dog.
When dealing with any reactivity or
aggressive behaviors, having a behavior
trainer work with you is a great start.
We will show you positive reinforcement
training techniques that will help your
dog positively resolve frustration, fear
or anxiety that he may experience, and
teach him what you want him to do
when he sees another dog.
To sign up for the Feisty Fido class,
or for a private consultation or private
lesson, please call (619) 299-7012, ext. 2334 or 2335.
Sincerely,
Margaret Lenoir, Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT)
and San Diego Humane Society and SPCA Behavior Trainer
A New Leash on Life
In an ideal world our dogs walk loosely
on-leash and always take instruction
from us. But it’s not a perfect world,
and very often we find that we are the
ones being walked by our dogs. Walking a
dog successfully on a loose leash requires
understanding of both the physical and
emotional components involved.
As in all training, working on leash
walking should be fun and relaxed for
both you and your pet. This is especially
true when working with shy or excitable
dogs. Leash walking should never become
a battle between you and your dog, and
should also never include anything that
could damage your relationship with your
canine companion.
So, why do dogs pull on leashes?
First, pulling behavior stems from
“opposition reflex,” or a dog’s instinctive
behavior to lean into pressure on their
bodies, which turns many pups into
bulldozers when going out for a daily
stroll. One of the most important aspects
of leash walking is having the equipment
best suited to your dog. The proper
equipment will be well-fitted, serve as
an effective management and/or training
tool, and will not be harmful to your dog.
We discourage the use of devices that
can physically hurt your dog, such as
Photo: Softouch Concepts
shock collars, choke chains and prong/
pinch collars. While some people may
see results with this equipment, it can
significantly damage your relationship
with your dog. In fact, when you train
using intimidation or pain this can
actively teach your dog to be afraid of you,
when you want the opposite – you want
your dog to have fun walking with you!
Fortunately, there are many types
of effective, humane and pet-friendly
walking gear that can help train your
dog in a positive way:
Flat Buckle Collar: If your dog
walks reasonably well on-leash, a flat
buckle collar may be all you need for an
enjoyable stroll with your buddy. These
collars should be made of leather or
sturdy webbing material, and always
check the buckle to ensure it is strong
and will not pop open should your dog
become excited and lunge to the end of
his leash.
Leash walking should
never become a battle
between you and your
dog, and should also
never include anything
that could damage your
relationship with your
canine companion.
Martingale Collar: This type of
“limited slip” collar has a loop that
contracts a small amount should your
dog pull or try to back out of his collar.
This is not tight enough to “choke” your
dog; it simply provides a bit of extra
control when it is needed and also
distributes the pressure around the neck
so that the dog is less likely to pull.
Head Halters: Head halters, which
have a ring on the underside of the dog’s
chin where the leash attaches, make it
easy for you to turn your dog’s head gently
in order to “steer” him away from distractions
or in the direction you would like to
go. There are many kinds of head halters
on the market, but the two that we like
best are the Gentle Leader ® and the
Comfort Trainer. A properly fitted
halter will still allow your dog to pant,
drink water, and eat treats. Whichever
one you choose, it is very important to
never jerk your dog’s leash – this can
cause very serious damage to your dog’s
neck.
SENSE-ation Harness: Our other
favorite leash walking product is the
SENSE-ation body harness.
This harness is different
from the traditional body
harness in that the leash
attaches to a ring at
the dog’s breastbone
rather than on the dog’s
back. The SENSE-ation works
similarly to a head halter in that it places
far less pressure on the dog’s body and
instead of creating a backward pulling
feeling, these harnesses are designed to
work with pulling a leash upwards, sideways
or forward. As long as a leash is not
pulled backwards, the pet does not feel
the need to lean into the harness, which
reduces pulling on the leash.
Whichever tool you choose for leash
walking, it is important to go slowly.
This is especially true for head halters –
having something on their face is a novel
experience for most dogs, and so will
require slow introduction using treats
and praise. Remember our mantra
– training should be fun for both you
and your dog! Make it into a game, and
your dog will love strutting their stuff in
new leash walking attire!
The Behavior and Training
Department offers Leash Walking
workshops and private Leash Walking
training sessions. We have a Behavior
Helpline at (619) 299-7012, ext. 2244 to
advise you on the best choice for your
dog. You can also find all of the above
mentioned walking gear at Muttique, the
Humane Society’s on-campus store.
Lovable Bunny Seeks a Special Place to Spend his Days
Blackie the rabbit has been waiting
for a new family almost longer
then any other bunny at the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA!
• Blackie came to live at the
Humane Society because he was one
of many rabbits in a home and wasn’t
receiving enough attention.
• Those who work with Blackie note
that although he is initially shy, he’s
also quick to warm up.
• Rabbits make wonderful indoor
pets because they are naturally social
and inquisitive animals that enjoy
companionship and play.
• Blackie is litter box trained and is
most active during the morning and
evening, making him an ideal pet for
someone who works or is gone during
the day.
• Blackie will do best in a home
with adults/older children that will
understand how to gently pet and
handle him.
If you think a rabbit would be an
excellent addition to your home, hop
over to the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA to meet sweet, bouncing
Blackie today!
Rabbits make great indoor pets who enjoy
Mississippi. Right photo: Sherman Street Manager Jenny Gonzales and Jamie Cryer, driver of the
“Love Train,” pose with Labrador Retriever puppies who made the cross country trip to San Diego.
The San Diego Humane Society recently welcomed 55 puppies and nearly 40 adult
and adolescent dogs from the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM). Since the
devastation of Hurricane Katrina, HSSM has been trying to help all animals in need,
but unfortunately there remains a limited adopter base in the area and the overcrowded
shelter contiunes to receive animals on a daily basis.
Fortunately, through the goodwill of other animal welfare organizations and the
philanthropy of individuals, many animals have been transported to new homes across
the country through the organization’s new program, the “Love Train.” The San Diego
Humane Society accepted HSSM’s request for help and took in dogs through their
Sherman Street facility, which routinely takes in adoptable animals from other shelters.
After the dogs were behaviorally and medically assessed and cleared, many were adopted
out over Adoptathon weekend to new, loving homes. In the future, we plan to continue to
take in animals from humane organizations in the Gulf Coast area as need arises.
Local Girl Scout Troop Earns Prestigious Silver Award
for their work with the San Diego Humane Society
It took ten dedicated Girl Scout
Cadettes, three sewing moms, two
amazing Troop Leaders, and two long
years to create one of the largest single
donations the San Diego Humane Society
has ever seen from a group of Girl Scouts
in all of its 125 years of service.
In order to be a candidate for one of
the most prestigious community service
awards within the Girl Scouts, Girl
Scout Troop 3959 constructed a plan
they could dedicate themselves to for the
next two years.
This plan had two very distinct
objectives. The first was to construct a
hanging, handmade quilt to educate and
inspire the community to help animals in
need. The second objective was to have
individual donation drives within their
neighborhoods to benefit the San Diego
Humane Society.
Each Cadette logged over 60 hours
in their neighborhood donation drives
which resulted in mountains of pet
supplies flooding the Humane Society’s
hallways. After dropping off this huge
donation of pet goods, gift cards, and
over $600 in donations, the girls received
a special behind-the-scenes tour of the
Humane Society.
Humane Society staff members later
attended Troop 3959’s Silver Award
ceremony at the end of May and the
staff were presented with a beautiful
handmade quilt. Over the course of two
years, the girls had met once a month
with the three sewing moms, for six
hours of instruction each, to learn how
to quilt. It was also during this time that
the girls designed and sewed together
each of their own swatches. To see this
majestic quilt in person, take a walk
down Wallis Annenberg Way, on the right
of our Adoption Gallery.
Thank you Troop 3959 for all of your
hard work, dedication, and support. The
animals and staff at the Humane Society
could not be happier or more impressed
by such a stellar group of young women.
Do you wish you could do more to help
animals, but not sure how to make it happen?
