Teaching Your IRA to Roll Over
If you are at least 70.5 years old, you may find that sharing
tax-favored assets through an IRA rollover gift can be a
wonderful way to continue helping people and animals in
our community. You can make a direct charitable gift to the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA in any amount up to
$100,000 during a single year from your IRA assets without
having to pay federal taxes on the withdrawal, and it satisfies
your mandatory distribution requirement.
To receive all the benefits of the law, your gifts must be
distributed directly from your IRA by your administrator to
the San Diego Humane Society, so please do not withdraw the
funds yourself. It is not known whether this IRA provision will
be available beyond 2009, so you may want to consider making
such a gift during this year. We also suggest that you talk with
your tax advisor to be sure a rollover gift would be appropriate
for you and that the transaction will happen correctly. Donors
of any age can still make a deferred gift of an IRA or other
retirement account by naming the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA as a beneficiary of their account.
