president’s message
Consider an Adult Cat
Mark Goldstein, D.V.M.
President of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with Dalton.
The adorable antics of kittens frolicking about their rooms on our campus quickly draws in adopters. But, how
many people look at the adult cat snoozing quietly in the next room? Kittens are adorable and irresistible, but
we often forget that they grow up to be adult cats and lose that kitten spunk (and if you’ve ever been on the
receiving end of a 3 a.m. face walk from a kitten, you’re glad they do!) This season many kittens will be adopted while
adult or senior cats in our animal welfare organizations will continue to wait for homes. So I’d like to address the
benefits of adopting adult cats and the special and wonderful love they give in return to their new families.
While adult cats may not have the universal kitten appeal, they are wonderful and loveable in their own right.
Each cat has his or her own personality, be they an independent-type, a loveable lap cat, a playful clown or a “pretty
princess” and each makes a good match for different types of homes. And since cats aren’t fully mature until they are
around 18 months to two-years-old, you won’t know for sure what kind of personality a kitten will ultimately develop.
Adult cats, on the other hand, have already established their personalities, allowing adopters to handpick the type of
cat that will fit in best with their lifestyle and home environment.
In addition to having personalities that won’t change over time, mature cats have a medium energy level compared
to kittens. Also, many adult cats have already been socialized to different things like other cats, dogs, children, living
indoors, etc., making it even easier to find the right feline match for you and your family.
Our adopters are often enthralled by the personalities of our mature cats and find it easy to assimilate them into
their homes. On this note, I would like to share with you an experience in my life that relates to the addition of an
adult cat to a new family. Due to a health-related issue, my cousin recently asked my wife Kris and I if we could find
a temporary home for her eight-year-old cat, Dalton. We discussed possible homes and then thought, “why not us?”
Well, in addition to my wife and I, “us” also includes Ren our five-year-old Jack Russell/Beagle mix adopted from the
San Diego Humane Society and Ernie our 27-year-old, 30 pound African Spurred Tortoise.
The fact that Kris is allergic to most cats further complicated the potential arrangement. The allergen that most
people react to comes from a protein in the cat’s saliva. It is the presence or absence of this protein and the cat’s
grooming habits that determine if you will react to them. So, if you’re allergic and don’t think you can have a cat,
don’t rule out all cats if you have had a reaction to some. Thankfully, Kris did not have a reaction to Dalton and so he
came to stay with us.
To our wonderful surprise, myself, Kris, Ren, Ernie and now Dalton are all living together in harmony. Ernie is
still in charge and periodically Ren and Dalton let each other know who is more important in various ways. Overall,
Kris and I are the biggest winners, as we now have another animal in our home providing us with companionship
and unconditional love. We never thought we could have added an adult cat to our home, but now that we have, I am
so glad we took that chance. When you adopt an adult or senior cat, you make a difference for a special pet in need
and in turn, they reward you with love that will last a lifetime and beyond.
Thank you for your steadfast commitment to our organization. Your unwavering assistance allows us to continue
caring for the animals and people in support of the human-animal bond.
San Diego Humane Society Staff:
We wanted to thank you for our
delightful, precious Emma! She has
brought so much joy and so many smiles
to our home. She loves the neighborhood
kids (and adults) and their pets. She has
been more wonderful than we could have
hoped – we are just one big happy PACK!
Sincerely,
Colleen & Joe Kraska
Dear Humane Society,
I wanted to write and give you an
update on our cat Monkey. Our boy has
grown up to be the lovable terror of the
household! I managed to catch him being
still the other day and took this photo
so you can see him again. Monkey is
very smart and is a fan of playing fetch,
whether it is with one of my hair ties or
one of his toy mice. Just wanted to let you
know how the sweet boy was doing!
Melissa Monti
San Diego Humane Society,
We just wanted to say hello and
thank you for taking care of Taffy. We
love her dearly and are spoiling her
rotten! Taffy loves her new home and
gets all the petting and love she could
ever want. She slept like a baby the
first few nights after her adoption (she
must have needed to catch up on her
beauty sleep). Thank you for letting
us know how much she enjoys KONGs
– they’re her favorite! Thanks again
and please say hello to all of Taffy’s
c o v e r s t o r y
Last month we celebrated “National Volunteer Appreciation Week,” but our admiration for
this dedicated group of individual goes far beyond this short time span as does the effects
of their work. An old Greek proverb says, “a civilization flourishes when people plant trees
under which they will never sit.” This is the definition of the goodwill that is shown at the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA everyday. Without fail, seven days a week volunteers show up at our
campus to make an investment. They invest their most precious asset: their time and energy helping
animals that are not their own.
doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”– Margaret Mead
Not only does the Humane Society
rely on the financial generosity of our
community, we also depend on the people
who volunteer their time to help animals.
Volunteers assist with virtually every
aspect of our organization from direct
animal care to helping with customer
service. We simply could not accomplish
what we do without the dedication
and hard work of this valued group of
individuals.
“There are only 24 hours in a day. We
can always make more money, buy more
material objects, but the one thing that
none of us can do is make more time.
That is a fixed principle,” said Dr. Mark
Goldstein, Humane Society President.
“So, when I see an individual coming to
help us and the animals, I am grateful
and filled with admiration because they
are giving to us their most valuable,
most cherished resource.”
In the last fiscal year, our volunteers
gave 52,693 hours of their time. That
equates to 6,586 eight-hour workdays,
which would take one individual over 25
years to complete!
In addition to the sheer quantity of
time our volunteers donate, they bring
quality to what they do as well. Before
becoming a Humane Society volunteer,
AnimalFare • Summer 2006
individuals attend a volunteer orientation
in addition to specific trainings
depending on what area they volunteer
in and the skills needed. For example,
Dog Walkers and Cat Buddies will
attend at least five hours of classes
on animal care, while volunteers in
the Humane Society’s Animal Rescue
Reserve must complete six months of
training, including special certifications,
prior to responding to an emergency.
By training our volunteers, we help them
to deliver quality care while ensuring the
safety and well being of both the
volunteers and the animals. Regardless of
their type of work, one thing that unites
volunteers is their love and dedication to
helping animals and our community.
When many volunteers first come
to the Humane Society, it is simply
with the intention of wanting to help
the animals. After they go through
orientation and training they realize
that “helping animals” is a lot more
than petting and playing with them.
It also includes everything from positive
reinforcement training, to doing laundry,
to greeting visitors and to working
Humane Society’s message out to the
public.
“When they learn about what we
do and that there is still so much to be
done, that is when the dedication truly
starts,” says Cathy Covington, Director
of Volunteers. “What I appreciate is that
not only are they volunteering, they are
taking the time to learn and gain a true
understanding of animal welfare. These
volunteers really believe in what they
are doing and sincerely believe in the
Photo: Cathy Covington
Humane Society’s mission. They realize
the impact they make and volunteering
becomes a way of life for them.”
Fred and Alice Wassermann are two
of the many people that volunteer at
the Humane Society. They have been
donating their time for a little over a
year, ever since their cats passed away.
“We lost Abby about a year and a
half ago and so we started coming to the
Humane Society to get our ‘fur fix’,”
stated Fred Wassermann. “Since then
I’ve learned all about cats and dogs.
We’ve had animals our whole lives, but
we still learn more each day. And this
facility is so unique! We’ve told many
people about it, but they don’t believe us
until I bring them here. Then they see
what we see and are amazed.”
“It’s very rewarding and makes you
feel good,” remarked Alice Wassermann.
“The dogs are always happy to see you!”
In addition to “putting in the time,”
the enthusiasm of Humane Society
volunteers is unparalled. In fact, the
San Diego Humane Society’s volunteers
are so enthusiastic and dedicated that
volunteers out-number staff six to one!
And, they constantly respond when a
request for help is made.
“I am always amazed at their
flexibility and willingness to help;
wherever they are needed,” remarked
Covington. “Their consistent generosity
is just tremendous! Whether we need
help with an event after hours, doing
data entry, or with pet socialization
– they are always there for us and the
animals.”
Whether the San Diego Humane
Society volunteers work directly with
the animals or in other capacities, their
investment reaches much farther than
an individual animal or project. In
essence, just like planting a tree, it is
truly an investment in the people
and animals of this community for
generations to come. Were it not for the
dedication of these volunteers, the San
Diego Humane Society would not be the
success it is today. We are now able to
boast that we have attained the goal of
saving the life of every adoptable animal
that comes to us. And for this, we extend
our ultimate appreciation!
Make Your Pet a Pin-up!
Photo: Lori Walton
Do you have a great photo of your favorite feline or most precious
pooch? Or a furry friend who missed their calling as a super-model of the
animal type? Don’t miss this chance to guarantee your favorite animal
companion a spot in the sought-after annual calendar that honors San
Diego’s favorite pets!
Complete the following form and include the entry fee of $25 per
picture, and your pet is guaranteed to be included in the San Diego
Humane Society 2007 calendar! All proceeds support the San Diego
Humane Society and best of all, by entering the calendar contest, you’ll
automatically receive a free 2007 calendar!
Tips for Photographing Your Pet:
• Location and Background – Whether capturing your pet indoors
or out, look for a location where your pet will be relaxed and natural.
Consider the background and photograph your pet against colors that
contrast with their coats. In addition, keep backgrounds clutter-free.
• The Eyes Have It – For close-ups, focus on your pet’s eyes as they
convey your pet’s personality the best. Unless you can angle your flash,
avoid shooting in low light situations where flash is required and your
pet’s eyes are likely to “glow.” Natural light is a great way to go!
• Black and White Coats – Pets with black or white coats can be
difficult to photograph. Black coats absorb the light and are tricky to
expose properly because they are almost always darker than their
surroundings. When working with dark animals, prepare to make
adjustments, such as over lighting the pet or opening your aperture
wider to properly expose the image. Conversely, when shooting animals
with very light coats, make sure the lighting is not too bright.
• Patience is a Virtue – Taking the perfect shot or snapping the perfect
expression may take time. Don’t get frustrated, stay relaxed and have
fun and your pet will too! You may want to use a helper or squeak toys to
get your pet to look toward the camera.
Giving Through Retirement Plans
Retirement plans like IRA, 403(b)s,
401(k)s, and other qualified
plans help contribute to a secure
financial future for many Americans.
Most people, however, are unaware of
how severely their retirement plans are
taxed when given to a child, friend or
relative after death. As a result, retirement
plan proceeds make the perfect
charitable gift to leave to a non-profit
organization like San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA.
You can direct in advance that all or
part of your retirement assets be designated
to the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA, and it’s easy to do. Just ask
your plan administrator for a “change
of beneficiary” form and indicate the
amount or percentage to be used for
charitable purposes at your death.
You might also find it good tax
planning to make current gifts from
your retirement plan if you are at a
point in life when you can withdraw
funds without an early withdrawal
penalty. Of course, we always suggest
you consult your attorney or financial
advisor prior to completing such gifts.
Our free information booklet, Giving
Through Retirement Plans, may help
you. To request a free copy of this
booklet, simply complete and return the
form below, or send an e-mail request to
cc@sdhumane.org.
As an organization that relies on
charitable gifts to continue its programs
serving animals and people, we are most
grateful for your ongoing, generous
support.
Ask a Trainer
CATastrophe!
Q: I adopted two cats in May of last
year and they have been wonderful
companions. They are the only pets
I have and they have never had any
issues until now. I recently had an
overnight guest and the cats were not
able to sleep in their normal spots. In
the morning I noticed that one of the cats
had defecated on the floor. I’m worried
because they have never done anything
like this before and their litterbox is
always kept very clean. What’s your
advice?
Worried in Carlsbad, CA
As you suspected, your guest may have
disrupted a familiar habit or sleeping
area, which could be the cause of the
uneasiness in your cats.
If your cats are relieving themselves
in places other than the litter box as a
result of stress, punishment will only add
to your cats’ anxiety and perpetuate the
problem.
A practical solution for you and your
cats may be to set up an undisturbed
“quiet area” for your cats where they
For many pets,
and especially cats,
Behavior Trainer Margaret Lenoir plays with an
adoptable cat named Lucas in his habitat. The
Humane Society’s cat habitats have music, toys,
soft beds and cat pheromone plug-ins to help
calm the cats and make them feel at home.
Photo: Sarah Whorley
A: Thank you for your question!
Inappropriate elimination is not an
uncommon behavioral issue in cats.
First, I would recommend that you
have your cats seen by your veterinarian,
as behavioral changes are sometimes a
result of an underlying medical problem.
Barring any medical issues, behavior
changes can often stem from stress or
anxiety. For many pets, and especially
cats, any sort of change in their environment
or routine can be distressing.
An adoptable cat relaxes at the Humane Society
in a habitat designed to keep cats happy,
healthy and stress-free.
Photo: BJ Comer
any sort of change
in their environment
or routine can
be distressing.
can feel comfortable hanging out when
you have guests. Play soothing music
in the area and spend time with them
there to ensure they feel comfortable
and at ease. You will also want to fill
the area with enrichments such as toys,
cozy places to lounge or snuggle, hiding
places, cat trees, and a sufficient number
of litter boxes (the general rule for litter
boxes, especially if you are having issues,
is one for each cat, plus one).
You may also want to use a product
called “Feliway,” a spray-on or plug-in
cat pheromone that helps to calm cats
and that can prevent urination where
the product is sprayed. Feliway is
available at the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA Store and other pet
retailers. Using the plug-in version of
Feliway in your cat’s quiet area will
help them feel even more relaxed and
at ease in their safe place.
The key is to provide your cats with
a place that will help them relieve
stress and relax when they are feeling
upset by change.
For more helpful information on the
root of feline behavior, you also may be
interested in attending our “How To
Live Happily Ever After with Your Cat”
workshop. This two-hour problem
solving class includes such topics as how
to better communicate with your cat,
preventing common behavior problems,
appropriate play, and much more.
Space in this popular class is limited;
so if you’d like to attend please call
(619) 299-7012, ext. 2247 to pre-register.
I wish you the best of luck with your
cats’ issue and in creating a “no stress”
zone for your cats.
Sincerely,
Margaret Lenoir,
Losing a Pet: A Heartbreaking Experience
For pet owners, the meows, barks,
chirps and other friendly noises
associated with their pets are
comforting, everyday sounds. Pet
owners are used to coming home each
day to their pets’ loving faces, and
willingly devote hours to their pets’
happiness through various feeding,
grooming, playing and petting rituals.
Because of this devotion, it’s no surprise
that our pets hold a special place in our
hearts. Not only are they considered
best friends, great listeners, and
wonderful companions, they also give
their owners unconditional love; so it
is common that when a beloved pet
passes, the pain felt after the loss can
be overwhelming. Consequently many
pet parents go through the same grieving
process for their pet as they would a
human companion. Even though the pet
has passed, the bond created between the
human and the animal remains.
In recognition of the complex feelings
associated with the loss of a pet, and in
honor of the human-animal bond, the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
offers a bi-monthly Pet Loss Support
Group as a resource to the community.
The support group is not only open to
those who have recently lost their pet,
but to those who are still mourning an
old loss, anticipating the death of a pet,
or preparing for euthanasia. Family,
friends and society may not always
understand the depth of one’s love for
a pet and therefore they may find it
difficult to support the grief felt by those
who’ve lost a pet. The Pet Loss Support
Group provides an environment where
thoughts and emotions can be shared
with those of similar circumstances and
feelings of grief are understood and
validated.
Perhaps the most vital
step in coping with the
emotions you will feel
upon the loss of your pet
is acknowledging them.
Facilitated by Licensed Clinical Social
Worker, Louisa Triandis, attendees to the
Pet Loss Support Group are invited to
share their memories, frustrations and
pain in an open and sympathetic forum.
After her first session, one participant
said she felt better realizing she had “a
sense of camaraderie with others who
felt the same way.” Participants are
Photo: Rebecca Pinnick
encouraged and supported through the
natural process of grieving as they
progress through the common stages of
denial, anger, depression, bargaining,
guilt and resolution. There is no set
amount of time for each stage, nor a
specific emotion one should feel. Each
person grieves in his or her own way
and may not go through each stage.
Perhaps the most vital step in coping
with the emotions you will feel upon the
loss of your pet is acknowledging them.
Triandis says, “Having one, two or even
three set times every day when you
know you will spend 15 to 30 minutes
crying, journaling or doing whatever you
want to grieve can be helpful. It is also
important to take good care of yourself,
eat well and exercise even if you don’t
feel like it.”
If you’ve lost a pet and feel like you
would benefit from the support of others
who’ve experienced a similar loss, then
the San Diego Humane Society’s Pet
Loss Support Group may help.
The Pet Loss Support Group is held
on the first Tuesday of the month from
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the third Saturday
of the month from 10 a.m. to noon.
The cost is $25 per session. To register,
please call (619) 299-7012, ext. 2311.
A Perfect Match
A
special little dog named Calvin got a second chance at
life and love thanks to our Sherman Street Program.
You see, the Sherman Street Program uses the
Humane Society’s former facility on Sherman Street to house
and care for animals transferred from overcrowded shelters
throughout San Diego and beyond. Calvin was transferred to
Sherman Street from an animal welfare organization in Los
Angeles and this is his story.
On February 9, 2006 Calvin (then named Derby) was waiting
at the San Diego Humane Society’s Gaines Street facility
in dog habitat #14 for his new pet parents to find him. On that
day Patricia Miller came to the San Diego Humane Society and
Patricia (left), Terry (right) and Calvin
pose for a reunion photo at the
San Diego Humane Society.
Photo: Simran Zilaro
SPCA with her caretaker
and friend, Ann, to find a
dog to be her companion.
They had come to meet
another dog they had seen
on the Internet, but weren’t
sure if her size and energy
level were right for Patricia,
who is handicapped. Luckily
their adoption counselor,
Terry Lockwood, knew a dog
that would be the perfect
match for Patricia and she
introduced them. It turned
out to be a great fit!
Here is a note we received from Patricia a few months after she
adopted her new friend:
Calvin… there aren’t words to describe what a cool dog
he is. He came in to my home via another dog whose cute
face on the Internet took me to the San Diego Humane
Society. That dog was a little too big for me, I wanted a
friend I could hold on my lap.
Our adoption counselor Terry said she had the dog
for me. She took me to see a little brown Chihuahua mix.
We were a couple immediately, him sitting on my lap
and licking my face. So off we went to his new home
in Escondido.
First, I changed his name to Calvin and he quickly
became the king of our home, sleeping under the covers,
which his dad said would never happen (little did he
know!) and having the run of the house. However, Calvin
is more than a beloved pet, he is also my protector.
Being handicapped I have difficulties swallowing and
often choke. One day, Calvin was outside in the backyard
with my caretaker, Ann, for his walk. I was eating my
breakfast and started choking. Neither Ann nor my
boyfriend was close enough to hear me, but Calvin did!
He pulled Ann, running through the patio at full speed
trying to get to me. He was going so fast trying to get to
me that he didn’t see the closed sliding glass door and
ran into it. Luckily, Calvin was OK and thanks to him,
so am I.
Calvin has been a wonderful addition to our home
showing us how dogs are our companions, friends and
protectors, giving us unadulterated love and devotion.
Thank you for enriching my life,
Humane Society’s Fur Ball Sets the Stage for Love
When Diane Pierce won the
raffle for the Westminster
Dog Show Package at last
year’s Fur Ball, she never thought that
her trip to New York would change her
life forever.
Diane and her boyfriend, Jason
Severson, were invited to attend the
Humane Society’s annual Fur Ball gala
by John E. Parker, a long time supporter
of the Humane Society and past Fur
Ball honoree. During the event, Diane
won tickets to see the Westminster Dog
Show in New York City and Jason knew
it would be the perfect place to propose
to Diane.
Jason planned the weeklong trip
to New York City meticulously, with
dinner reservations to the most exclusive
restaurants and tickets to the hottest
Broadway musicals. The one thing
he didn’t plan on was the weather. A
blizzard hit New York City that
Valentine’s Day weekend with over
26-inches of snow. Still, that didn’t stop
his plans of proposing to Diane in the
middle of Central Park at a bench in
front of “The Pond” on that beautiful,
snowy February 14 th .
He gave Diane two presents that
afternoon and instructed her to open the
larger present first, a book titled “The
Right Dog For You.” The second present
was also a book; a miniature book in the
shape of a small house titled “Home.” As
she opened the mini-book, carved within
the pages was a beautiful diamond
engagement ring. At that moment,
Jason got down on one knee and said,
“Diane, I want to adopt a dog, choose a
home, and build a future with you. Will
you marry me?”
Diane and Jason are presently
planning the details of their upcoming
Jason and Diane moments after Jason proposed in
Central Park.
nuptials and the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA feels honored to have
been just a small part of their beautiful
love story and wishes them the best in
their future together.
