Walk for Animals Raises More Than $325,000

Where can you find fun music, pancakes galore and
pooches and people dressed head to toe in their finest
rock ‘n’ roll gear? Only at the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA’s 16 th annual Walk for Animals!
In a true testament to the human-animal bond,
more than 4,000 animal lovers and 2,000 of their furry
companions gathered at Crown Point Shores to “Walk ‘n’
Roll” on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Walkers raised more than
$325,000 to support the vital community programs and
services of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
Long-time supporters of the San Diego Humane Society,
Dave Mason of 105.7 FM “The Walrus” and Pamela Howe
of San Diego’s Total Traffic Network emceed the event from
a rock ‘n roll decorated stage, while The Hot Pursuit Band
provided walkers with entertainment all morning long.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered to flip and serve pancakes,
help with mobile adoptions and run doggy contests like
bobbing for hot dogs.
There were more than 20 raffle contests with prizes
ranging from family adventures at SeaWorld and the San
Diego Zoo to luxurious spa visits. A diverse Vendor Village
spread across the park alongside behavior and training
booths and a mobile adoptions center.
On stage, San Diego Humane Society President and CEO
Dr. Mark Goldstein thanked the crowd and expressed his
sincere appreciation for their participation. He explained
that with the valuable support coming from this event, more

can be accomplished: more animals will be rescued from
abusive and devastating circumstances, saving lives and
providing unconditional love and support to new families
that will cherish them. More children will experience our
summer camps and other educational programs to learn
about animals, helping to contribute to a more caring and
compassionate society. More families can come home to
wagging tails, sloppy kisses and loving hugs.
Later in the day, Dr. Mark made a surprise special
announcement, inviting PETCO Foundation Chairman
Charlie Piscitello and Executive Director Paul Jolly to the
stage. Over the years, the PETCO Foundation and various
PETCO stores have given the San Diego Humane Society
$1.3 million to support programs and services. At the 16 th
annual Walk for Animals, they presented a teary-eyed
Dr. Mark with an additional $1 million check to support
all three campuses of the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA: Gaines, Sherman, and the new North Campus
located in Oceanside (for more on the PETCO Foundation’s
support of the San Diego Humane Society, see page 8).
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is grateful to
each and every walker, both two and four-legged, for making
another Walk for Animals a tremendous success!
