Special guests, both two and four-legged, from the
San Diego Humane Society’s North Campus joined in the
Oceanside Independence Day Parade to help honor our
military heroes. The North Campus’ favorite Pit Bull Terriers
strutted their stuff to salute the breed’s proud history of
serving with the armed forces, dating all the way back to the
Civil War. Above, an adoptable puppy waits patiently with
volunteer Shelley Graves, for his parade debut.
Summer Camp was a great success at the San Diego
Humane Society! Our 2010 Animal Adventure Camp
welcomed more than 500 children to the sessions at both the
Gaines and North Campuses. Campers at the Gaines Campus
got an extraordinary treat on July 12 when Congresswoman
Susan Davis, the Representative from California’s 53 rd
District, stopped by to observe a few lessons. Above, perennial
camper Brianna Pinto, who appeared on the summer cover of
AnimalFare, shares her craft project with the congresswoman.
On May 20, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s
Humane Investigations Officers along with members of
the Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR) assisted the County of
San Diego Department of Animal Services in conducting a
search warrant on a suspected cockfighter. The officers and
ARR members helped the Department of Animal Services
identify evidence and lent their expert animal handling
skills to help safely and quickly round up more than 500
fighting birds that were being kept on the property.
An enduring spirit is what comes to mind when one
thinks about Pocket, a one-year-old Miniature Pinscher who
came to the San Diego Humane Society with a badly broken
leg. Through a series of intense operations, Humane Society
veterinarians did their best to save her leg, but eventually
had to amputate. Through it all, Pocket maintained
her positive spirit and became a darling of the Medical
Department. Today, Pocket is fully recovered and happily
living with a new family!

Patriots for Pets
In honor of National Flag Day on June 14, the San Diego
Humane Society had a patriotic flag-raising celebration at
the North Campus. Former North County Humane Society
Vice President Robert “Camo” Gleisberg spearheaded an
effort to return the campus’ flag pole to full glory, enlisting
help from the North County Veterans Association, Kiwanis
Club of Oceanside Pacific and K-Kids Club of Christa
McAuliffe Elementary School. Esteemed guests helped
raise the new flag and presented generous gifts to the
Humane Society amounting to more than $1,200.

Volunteers Help Renovate North
Campus
A wave of 50 volunteers from Life Technologies
came to the North Campus on Wednesday, May 26.
In just three hours, they spruced up the campus
with some small steps that made a big impact.
Their projects included a fresh coat of paint in the
play yard, new canine privacy screens, a brand new
Canine Companion Station for volunteers, and a
general sweeping and clean-up of the campus.
