Unanticipated Love
Which is Always There
Mark Goldstein, DVM,
CAWA, President of
the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
A
s you will read in our feature story, there are many animals who come to work at the San Diego Humane Society,
helping their human friends in programs like Pet-Assisted Therapy, Investigations, Animal Rescue Reserve
and Humane Education. While my dog Ren doesn’t have an official job at the Humane Society, she plays a very
important role in my life, both at home and at work. A Beagle/Jack Russell Terrier mix, Ren has lots of energy, a playful
spirit and a great vocabulary.
Companion animals have important roles, often adding meaning to our lives and helping us to live happier and
healthier. They help us get through difficult times and can make our joyful moments even more memorable. They also help
to keep things in perspective. Always in the present moment, they don’t care what label is on your blue jeans or what title
is on your business card. They provide love and understanding to people in a way that is quite magical, and I’d like to take
a moment to honor the important work that companion animals do every day, while asking very little in return.
When my father passed away unexpectedly in 2003, Ren immediately understood that something had happened, even
as I ended the phone call that informed me. She jumped into my lap as I experienced the initial shock, comforting me
when I needed it most. Before I felt anything—the sadness that comes with losing a person you love deeply—her eyes and
face seemed to say, “You are going to be okay. You’re not alone.” In dealing with my grief, I took many long walks on the
beach. Ren on one side of me and the ocean and all of its majesty on the other, both provided me great strength. Whether I
was laughing or crying, Ren always seemed to be listening.
I also saw that my daughter Nicole received a tremendous amount of emotional support from Ren as she was challenged
in her teenage years. My other daughter, Laura-Emily, was comforted in a similar fashion by her dog, Emma, during her
college years. When you’re struggling to figure out who you are, a loving companion who always accepts you and provides
unconditional love is an invaluable gift—especially since you can tell them anything without prejudice or judgment.
The value that animals bring to our lives was never more apparent in my role as a veterinarian than when I counseled
a young woman about considering euthanasia for her 16-year-old dog. As she was 18 years old, she understood the finality
of death but was fortunate to not have experienced the loss of a loved one in her life yet. As we began to talk more, I
realized that she wasn’t saying goodbye to an animal or trusted companion but to the best friend she’d ever known.
Later in my career, a 12-year-old boy and his mother came into my veterinary office with a hamster that had cancer on
his hind leg. As we discussed the possible options, the boy turned to his mom and said without reservation that he’d prefer
to use the money collected from his paper route over the past two years to help his furry friend, instead of purchasing the
bike he had been saving for. Never before had I seen so clearly how an animal can teach us about values.
As President of the Humane Society, I often reflect on my job and what we as a community can do to strengthen the
human-animal bond. As my good friend Dr. Richard Lederer said in his book A Treasury for Dog Lovers, “We give what
time we can spare, what space we can spare, what food we can spare, and what love we can spare.” In return, our animals
give us their all. Dr. Lederer had it right when he said, “It’s the best deal we human beings have ever made.” To continue
this great deal and to continue to pass on the treasures our trusted companion animals bring us, the unanticipated love
which is always there, we thank you for your past, present and, we hope, future support.
Hello, SD Humane Society!
We adopted Patrick and Tilly, our
little celebrities, from the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA, North
Campus. Playful and energetic, Tilly
keeps Patrick so entertained that he
can barely keep his little brown eyes
open. Their favorite activity is riding
in their stroller. From the mall to the beach, these little stars soak up the attention!
We often take them to the Humane Society because we feel that the volunteers are a
part of Patrick and Tilly’s family. It is so nice to see the smiles people get when they
see the bunnies all dressed up for their outings. Patrick always gets dressed first so
Tilly knows we are going somewhere. It is so funny to watch her go get her shirt and
bring it to me as if to say, “Don’t forget me, Mom!”
Dear San Diego Humane Society,
I adopted Esther after the sudden death of my world-travelling
companion feline last April. While the event was sad for me,
my remaining cat wailed for days missing her friend. A trip to
the Gaines Campus was the answer, where I found Esther (or
should I say she found me?). From the moment I walked in, she
had decided I was her next human. I knew it, too, when I met
her and she immediately jumped into my lap. Esther is happy,
playful, impish at times and loving life where she has more
than 1,800 square feet to run around after having lived at the Humane Society for
more than two years! My other cat, Molly, is thrilled to once again have a companion.
Esther and Molly love camping in the motor home with us or just laying around on
the cat tree together. We once again have a full and happy home.
E. Marie FitzGerald
Thank you, San Diego Humane Society,
We are so thankful that we adopted Gunner! He comes into work every day with me
(he’s a real ladies guy, so when he’s not sleeping and snoring loudly under my desk,
he is hanging out with my female co-workers getting petted and eating treats). We
started him at training classes mainly as a refresher since he was quite good at most
behaviors when we adopted him. He loves the classes (especially the beef jerky treats)!
We also take him to the beach and dog park. The first time we took him to the beach,
he put his toes in the water and yelped in surprise as the waves lapped over him. Now,
he loves swimming (although he prefers it if our children paddle in the water with him
rather than him swimming solo). We love him so much and are so happy that we found
exactly the right dog for our family.
Working
Weekday
A
smiling face waiting
for you when you
return home, the
warm furry body cuddled
up with you on the couch,
the listening ear that never
judges when we share our
secrets – our pets enrich our
lives in so many ways. What
if there was a way to multiply
that joy, for the unconditional
love of a pet to be shared in
a way that enriches the lives
of not only the pet’s owner,
but an entire community?
The San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA’s employees are doing just
that…but it’s not just our two-legged
employees that have the biggest
impact. A very special team of animals
trained in tail-wagging, bunny hopping
and giving warm kisses is hard at work
bringing love and teaching respect for
animals to residents across San Diego
County. These “employees” spend
their days at the San Diego Humane
Society’s Gaines and North Campuses,
working every day to share the
organization’s mission with the world.
Meet Sofia, a Jersey Wooly rabbit
working with the San Diego Humane
Society’s Pet-Assisted Therapy (P-AT)
program. Sofia lives in the Volunteer
Department along with 14 of her
closest rabbit, guinea pig and rat
friends. Together with some friendly
Canine Good Citizen certified dogs,
Sofia visits assisted living centers,
“The animals in our
P-AT program are
so amazing – it’s not
uncommon for a
person that visits with
them to fall in love.”
hospitals, nursing homes and other
facilities where residents are not
allowed to keep pets but would benefit
from spending time with animals like
her. “Sofia has only been working
in the P-AT program for one month,
but she is already a big hit with the
patients she visits,” says P-AT Program
Coordinator Judith Eisenberg. When
Sofia is ready to retire from her vital
job of bringing joy to those who need
it most, she will likely be adopted
by one of the San Diego Humane
AnimalFare •• Fall Fall 2010
Society’s many volunteers or even one
of the folks she interacted with on a
P-AT visit. “The animals in our P-AT
program are so amazing – it’s not
uncommon for a person that visits with
them to fall in love,” Eisenberg says.
Unlike the pets that work in the
P-AT program, many of the pets that
work with the San Diego Humane
Society’s education programs have
already been adopted. Bandit, a 3-yearold
bearded dragon, was adopted by
Stacey Zeitlin, Community Programs
Manager, in 2008 to be a reptile
ambassador for the Humane Society.
Bandit regularly works with children
at the Humane Society’s summer
camps, birthday parties, home school
lessons and more, teaching them that
it’s not just cats and dogs that deserve
love and respect. “The children learn
so much by meeting Bandit,” says
Zeitlin. “It’s more than simply a fun
interaction. Bandit teaches them the
value of respecting all animal life,
not just the furry pets we are used to
seeing in people’s homes. And because
he was born with only one eye, he
can help teach valuable lessons about
compassion and taking care of those
with special needs.”
At the North Campus, Jetty, a
2-year-old Bassett Hound mix, has
been teaching kids from Oceanside
and Vista about proper interaction
and handling with dogs. Girl and Boy
Scouts, Animal Adventure Campers,
and classes touring the North Campus
take turns feeding Jetty treats as
Humane Society educator Dr. Annie
Petersen shares important lessons
with the group. When North Campus
Volunteer Coordinator Eric Pitarresi
adopted Jetty in 2009, he had no
idea that Jetty would turn out to
be such a valuable employee. “Jetty
naturally makes the people around
her more happy, and the kids in our
education programs that visit her are
Animal Adventure Camper Leo Haluska visits with
Bandit, the bearded dragon.
no exception,” says Pitarresi. “She helps
the kids associate visiting the humane
society with being a positive experience.
Jetty does wonderfully in her job, and
I am happy that she can provide the
same joy to others that she provides to
me every day.”
But it’s not just the children that
benefit from Jetty’s visits. While many
people are familiar with the health
and emotional benefits that animal
interaction has on people, the benefits
aren’t only one-sided. Through her job,
Jetty gets both physical and mental
stimulation and truly enjoys coming
to work each day. “On the days that
she doesn’t come to work with me, she
gives me these sad, disappointed eyes,”
shares Pitarresi. “I have no doubt that
Jetty absolutely loves what she does
working with the San Diego Humane
Society.”
can be accomplished: more animals will be rescued from
abusive and devastating circumstances, saving lives and
providing unconditional love and support to new families
that will cherish them. More children will experience our
summer camps and other educational programs to learn
about animals, helping to contribute to a more caring and
compassionate society. More families can come home to
wagging tails, sloppy kisses and loving hugs.
Later in the day, Dr. Mark made a surprise special
announcement, inviting PETCO Foundation Chairman
Charlie Piscitello and Executive Director Paul Jolly to the
stage. Over the years, the PETCO Foundation and various
PETCO stores have given the San Diego Humane Society
$1.3 million to support programs and services. At the 16 th
annual Walk for Animals, they presented a teary-eyed
Dr. Mark with an additional $1 million check to support
all three campuses of the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA: Gaines, Sherman, and the new North Campus
Peace of Mind
One of the benefits of having a valid will is the peace
of mind you experience. To know that a plan is in
place and that you have made arrangements for the
needs of your loved ones and favorite charities, and that you
have arranged your affairs thoughtfully, can allow you to sleep
just a little more comfortably at night.
It takes an act of will to create a will that provides this peace
of mind. A person not only has to make the decision to do it, but
must also generate enough willpower to carry out the decision.
And sometimes that kind of willpower is hard to produce.
After all, a will takes time. One must find a good attorney,
create a summary of assets and then make decisions about
how the assets will be disbursed. There are family members to
consider, charitable causes to support, and of course, applicable
tax laws to bear in mind. And then there is the question of who
will administer the estate and who will serve as trustee of any
trusts. It’s so much easier to let things slide, to take care of the
will later. However, should you leave no will in place, the state
will decide how your assets will be distributed.
While it’s true that getting your last will and testament
finalized will demand some time and effort, the peace of mind
you will experience makes it all worthwhile – peace of mind
for you and peace of mind for your loved ones.
s Parading Pit Bulls Celebrate July 4 th
s Summer Campers’ Congressional Visitor
s Cracking Down on Cockfighting
s Big Help for a Small Dog
Special guests, both two and four-legged, from the
San Diego Humane Society’s North Campus joined in the
Oceanside Independence Day Parade to help honor our
military heroes. The North Campus’ favorite Pit Bull Terriers
strutted their stuff to salute the breed’s proud history of
serving with the armed forces, dating all the way back to the
Civil War. Above, an adoptable puppy waits patiently with
volunteer Shelley Graves, for his parade debut.
Summer Camp was a great success at the San Diego
Humane Society! Our 2010 Animal Adventure Camp
welcomed more than 500 children to the sessions at both the
Gaines and North Campuses. Campers at the Gaines Campus
got an extraordinary treat on July 12 when Congresswoman
Susan Davis, the Representative from California’s 53 rd
District, stopped by to observe a few lessons. Above, perennial
camper Brianna Pinto, who appeared on the summer cover of
AnimalFare, shares her craft project with the congresswoman.
On May 20, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s
Humane Investigations Officers along with members of
the Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR) assisted the County of
San Diego Department of Animal Services in conducting a
search warrant on a suspected cockfighter. The officers and
ARR members helped the Department of Animal Services
identify evidence and lent their expert animal handling
skills to help safely and quickly round up more than 500
fighting birds that were being kept on the property.
An enduring spirit is what comes to mind when one
thinks about Pocket, a one-year-old Miniature Pinscher who
came to the San Diego Humane Society with a badly broken
leg. Through a series of intense operations, Humane Society
veterinarians did their best to save her leg, but eventually
had to amputate. Through it all, Pocket maintained
her positive spirit and became a darling of the Medical
Department. Today, Pocket is fully recovered and happily
living with a new family!
Patriots for Pets
In honor of National Flag Day on June 14, the San Diego
Humane Society had a patriotic flag-raising celebration at
the North Campus. Former North County Humane Society
Vice President Robert “Camo” Gleisberg spearheaded an
effort to return the campus’ flag pole to full glory, enlisting
help from the North County Veterans Association, Kiwanis
Club of Oceanside Pacific and K-Kids Club of Christa
McAuliffe Elementary School. Esteemed guests helped
raise the new flag and presented generous gifts to the
Humane Society amounting to more than $1,200.
Campus
A wave of 50 volunteers from Life Technologies
came to the North Campus on Wednesday, May 26.
In just three hours, they spruced up the campus
with some small steps that made a big impact.
Their projects included a fresh coat of paint in the
play yard, new canine privacy screens, a brand new
Canine Companion Station for volunteers, and a
general sweeping and clean-up of the campus.
Fun in the Sun: pet health tips for Warmer Days
Q: In San Diego County, the summer seems to last until
November! I’m concerned about the hot weather’s affects on
my pet. What do I need to know to keep her healthy?
– Outdoor Enthusiast in Vista
A: Summer in San Diego does seem to last all year ‘round, and
thinking about your pet’s health and safety is important any time
of the year!
Along with the fun in the sun that many San Diegans enjoy
comes a new set of cautions and responsibilities for your pet’s
safety. Here are a few simple precautions to keep our pets safe
when the weather heats up.
Heat exhaustion is one of the most common emergencies seen
in veterinary practices during the summer. When the weather is
nice, nothing beats cruising in the car with your loyal friend. While
it may be tempting to take your pet with you in the car while
running errands, even on mild summer days, the temperature in
your car can reach 100-120 degrees in a matter of minutes when
left unattended. This applies to shaded parking spots as well as
areas in full sunlight. At this temperature, your animal’s internal
body temperature will rise very rapidly. Remember that dogs and
cats cannot perspire like humans and only dispel heat through
panting and the pads of their feet. When left in a hot car, even for
a few minutes, animals can suffer from heat stroke, brain damage,
bleeding disorders, and even death. These disasters can be avoided
by leaving your pet in the comfort of your home during errand days.
Are you thinking of hitting the streets with your dog on a warm
day? The ground becomes hot during the summer months, and
this can cause thermal burns to the pads of your dog’s feet. When
hiking or walking, make sure to take a break in the shade every
so often to cool your pet’s feet. Always make sure that you pet has
adequate access to water. Bring a dedicated bowl and water bottle
for your pet when you go on outings. Most importantly, when it
comes to warm weather, remember if you are hot, your pet is hot. If
you can’t stand the heat, neither can your dog or cat.
However, the heat isn’t the only health threat our pets face on
sunny days. With so many dog-friendly beaches and the perfect
weather to enjoy them, spending a day at the beach with your best
friend is one of the great joys of living in San Diego. That being
said, while at the beach keep an eye on your pet so that she does
not get into anything that you would not feed her at home. Dogs
tend to have a peculiar interest in ingesting rotten fish, seaweed,
sand, and salt water, all of which can cause gastrointestinal
upset. If after taking your pet to the beach she has any vomiting,
diarrhea, or does not otherwise feel well, a veterinarian should be
contacted right away.
Are the sunny days inviting you to spend more time in your
garden? Keep in mind that many of the fertilizers, insect, pest,
and rodent repellents used in gardens and around the house can
be toxic and even deadly to our pets even in small quantities.
Make sure to read the labels of products to confirm that they are
considered safe and “pet friendly.” There are many common plants
that are toxic to dogs and cats as well that should be avoided. Talk
to your veterinarian about any products or plants around your
home that you are unsure of. If your pet is seen rooting in the
garden or ingesting fertilizer, your veterinarian should be contacted
immediately. Remember to apply flea and tick medications at
least once monthly not just during the summer but all year long.
Fleas and ticks are not only a bother to your pet and a nuisance to
their hair coat, but they also transmit gastrointestinal parasites
and even some diseases that can be fatal to your pet. Check
with your veterinarian for the appropriate products to apply.
Additionally, the warmer months can bring out other creatures
that can be dangerous to your pet, including poisonous insects and
snakes. If your pet is bitten, veterinary attention should be sought
immediately.
With these tips in mind, you can feel comfortable getting out
and enjoying the extended summer that our county has to offer
your special furry friends.
Tito is a fun-loving pup with a playful
spirit and entertaining personality! This
active guy would enjoy going on outdoor
adventures and athletic pursuits with
his new pet parents. While he will do
well in a variety of homes, a breed-savvy
owner and a home with older children
is recommended. To help Tito and his
new pet parents get started off on the
right paw, the Humane Society’s five
Brian is a handsome kitty who enjoys
human companionship. Energetic and
happy to play and keep to himself, he
likes to create new games with his favorite
toys. Brian is looking for an adults-only
home (although he enjoys being petted,
he does not always enjoy being picked
up). He will also do best with experienced
cat owners and may enjoy playing with a
cat-savvy dog in the home. Entertaining
and adorable, this sweet boy can’t wait to
become a true member of the family.
Chamomile is an entertaining little girl
who will find comfort in a home with or
without other bunnies. Chamomile is
active in the morning and at night, so she
would make a nice match for working
pet parents. She is very clean, quiet and
litter-box trained. Chamomile is looking
for a family who loves to play but is also
patient and gentle. Chamomile’s adoption
fee includes her spay, current vaccinations,
permanent microchip identification, and
certificate for a free veterinary exam.
Fun on Four Legs: Agility Obstacle Skills
Dog training: it’s much more than just learning to sit. Did you know that the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA offers positive reinforcement-based training classes
for dogs of all ages and skill levels, even for the most advanced athletes?
Agility is just one of the ways that you can turn simple training into an exciting
bonding experience for you and your best friend. In addition to the bonding
experience, agility provides a healthy way to keep your dog active and challenge his
mind. This popular sport teaches dogs to jump hurdles, run through tunnels and
weave poles, and most importantly, interact with their owners in fun and positive
ways. Many graduates of the San Diego Humane Society’s Agility Obstacle Skills
classes have even gone on to participate with their dogs in Agility competitions!
If you’ve got an active dog that might enjoy the challenge of Agility or another
dog sport, the San Diego Humane Society’s Agility Obstacle Skills, Foundation for
Dog Sports, or Flyball classes may be for you. Visit www.sdhumane.org for a list of
upcoming classes, or call (619) 299-7012 x2244 for more information.
