Small, Furry and Fun
Dr. Mark Goldstein,
President of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with P-AT rabbit Cinderella.
Social. Curious. Energetic and full-of-life. According to their pet parents, these amazing animals love to run,
jump, explore and even dance. Am I talking about a new breed of cat or dog? No, I’m talking about rabbits. Like
many animal welfare organizations in San Diego County and across the country, the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA often has numerous pet rabbits available for adoption. Very few people realize that small animal
companions are available, and that they can add a tremendous amount of love and enrichment to people’s lives.
For instance, did you know that rabbits make great indoor pets? Rabbits are naturally social and inquisitive creatures,
but these aspects of their personality often don’t emerge when they are kept outdoors. An indoor rabbit may not be completely
free-roaming, like a cat or dog, but will enjoy spending supervised time outside her cage in a rabbit-proof area of
the home. It is during this supervised “playtime” that pet parents report their rabbits exhibiting their most entertaining
and interesting behaviors, such as playing with their toys, exploring a new area and sometimes even performing a kind of
bunny ballet!
Many people aren’t aware that rabbits are naturally clean animals who can be easily litter box trained, making them
great pets for apartment dwellers and those who suffer from allergies to dogs or cats. While they should be spayed and
neutered and require yearly health examinations, rabbits do not require regular vaccinations like a dog or cat. In addition,
rabbits are a good fit for working pet parents because they are most active during dawn and dusk. Finally, under proper
supervision by parents, rabbits can also be good pets for respectful, animal-savvy children.
You might be asking yourself why so many rabbits are available for adoption. Because people often take on these small
companions without fully understanding their special needs, rabbits are the third most relinquished pet in animal welfare
facilities. Since most people are unaware that rabbits can live harmoniously with us indoors, many rabbits live out their
lives outdoors in a hutch, with very little interaction from their human friends. Sensitivity to the elements, boredom, as
well as the presence of wild animals and outdoor cats can make outdoor life very stressful for a rabbit. Often a rabbit
dealing with the stress of living outdoors will become shy and timid.
In addition, rabbits are often mislabeled as great first time pets for children. While rabbits can be great pets for patient,
supervised, animal-savvy children, they can also be difficult first pets for children because most rabbits don’t enjoy being
held or picked up. Additionally, if not handled properly a rabbit could hurt itself or a child with his powerful hind legs.
Last but not least, unaltered rabbits often begin to exhibit behavior problems such as marking and aggression when they
reach sexual maturity. All of these factors combined often make rabbit pet parents frustrated to the point that they decide
to relinquish their rabbit to a humane society or animal welfare facility. Luckily, each of these challenges can be managed
with the proper tools and education.
Now that you know a little bit more about pet rabbits, the next time you are thinking of adopting a new, furry friend,
remember that a small animal may just be your perfect match! The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is proud to be
able to help these wonderful and special small animal companions through your continued support and generosity. They
may be small, but rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats can fill a large space in human hearts.
From the Mailbox
Dear San Diego Humane Society,
We adopted our guinea pig, Cinnamon,
from you several months ago. If you recall,
he was being used for your educational
programs. Here is a picture of him with
my son who adores Cinnamon! Since
this picture was taken, we’ve upgraded
Cinnamon to a larger cage and got him
a girlfriend named Coco. We are all very
happy with the new additions to our
household! Thanks!
Dawn McHorney
Dear Humane Society,
Thank you for taking so much time and effort
with Chico, who we adopted in February 2004. This
140 pounds of love has been a great addition to our
family. Your behavior training staff did a remarkable
job working with him.
Chico is so intelligent – aside from the traditional
sit, speak, etc., he now knows how to drink out of
the faucet at the park and go over the picnic tables
for additional exercise.
We have really enjoyed Chico’s energy. His
favorite game is still tug and he enjoys trips to the
beach in Coronado and his daily walks to the park. If
Chico isn’t playing with his toys, he’s usually in the sprinklers or his pool. He has
been such a good companion and is a delight at the end of a long day in the office.
Once again, thank you! We couldn’t image our lives without him and are very happy
we decided to adopt and didn’t miss out on this wonderful guy! It just goes to show what
a little extra time and love can do.
Sincerely,
Scott and Alis Nicolaus
Dear SDHS,
Thank you for taking care of JoJo
(now Jonesy) and giving him a chance
at a new life. We are convinced that we
have the best cat in the world! Jonesy is so
smart, inquisitive and truly enjoys spending
time with us. We just can’t get over his
stunning personality and feel so lucky to
have him as part of our family. Thanks for
bringing us together!
The San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA’s Animal Rescue
Reserve Program (ARR) is
embarking on a new era in
animal rescue that will greatly improve
the safety of San Diego’s animals during
disasters and emergencies. This dynamic
forty member, volunteer-based group
is in the process of transforming into a
completely mobile force.
C O V E R S T O R Y
Animal Rescue Reserve Enters a New Mobile Era
For over thirty years, ARR has come
to the aid of San Diego County livestock
and domestic animals in life threatening
situations. From natural disasters, to
accidents where animals have become
trapped in ravines or canyons, ARR’s
trained team of volunteers dedicate not
only their time, but also may risk their
lives to rescue animals and help people in
need.
Operating under the Society’s
Investigations Department, ARR has
been a stationary group with storage of
equipment and command center operations
based out of the Society’s property
in Poway. Due to San Diego County’s
increased need for rescue teams of this
nature, the San Diego Humane Society
has strived to make the ARR program
more efficient in order to help more
people and their animals.
In order to accomplish this, the
Society conceived the idea of converting
the ARR program into a more wellequipped
“mobile force.” Prior to this
concept, in the event of an emergency,
volunteers would first be deployed to
the Poway facility to pick up equipment
and vehicles before responding to
a rescue. If the emergency was located
far from the Poway facility, this extra
stop cost the team valuable time and
human resources. Additionally, in cases
of natural disasters the standard protocol
was for evacuated animals to be held at
the Poway location. However, this solution
proved inadequate during the 2003
Cedar fires when the Poway facility itself
had to be evacuated due to its proximity
to the fire.
“The mobile concept resolves this predicament,”
said Zachary Shalit, Chief of
Investigations for the San Diego Humane
Society and Commander of the ARR.
“By creating a portable corral system that
can be delivered to a secure area near the
disaster zone, but far enough away from
danger we can further ensure the safety
of both animals and people. The mobile
corrals will hold up to 50 large animals at
a time. In addition, we will also be working
with local ranches willing to volunteer
their properties as temporary housing
when evacuated animals need to be held
for longer periods of time. Creating a
mobile rescue team is a very cost and
time effective concept that will allow us
to better serve the community.”
From natural disasters,
to accidents where
animals have become
trapped in ravines or
canyons, ARR’s trained
team of volunteers
dedicate not only their
time, but also may risk
their lives to rescue
animals and help
people in need.
After thoughtful consideration about
how to construct the new mobile ARR,
the Society decided to sell the Poway
facility and use a significant portion
of the proceeds to upgrade the ARR
Program. Many of the ARR’s rescue
vehicles were antiquated and not fully
operational, which could pose a hazard to
volunteers and animals during emergency
situations. In addition to new multiuse
vehicles, which will be stored at the
Society’s centrally-located Sherman Street
facility for rapid deployment, the Society
will also purchase new, state-of-the-art
fire and emergency equipment for ARR
members so they can immediately and
more safely respond to emergencies. In
the past, personal protective equipment
was in limited supply and was entirely
volunteer furnished. Now all volunteers
will be custom fit for their gear in order
to ensure the highest standards in safety.
In addition to new portable corrals,
rescue vehicles and protective gear, the
ARR program will also be implementing
a mobile veterinary clinic and a
volunteer housing trailer. These new
mobile tools will allow ARR volunteers
to be more effective at disaster sites. For
example, the mobile clinic will allow for
on-site, immediate triage-type treatment
of injured animals, while the housing
trailer will provide volunteers with a
place to stay during emergencies, such as
fires, where 24-hour rescue resources are
needed.
The new ARR program also calls for
increased training of ARR volunteers.
Each month, members receive training
on topics such as large animal handling,
trailer loading, mud rescues, and CPR
and first aid for both animals and people.
When ARR volunteers respond to emergencies,
you can be sure the respondents
are highly-trained and experienced.
Before becoming an ARR team member,
volunteers must first attend the Society’s
volunteer orientation and complete interviews
with the Society’s Volunteer and
Investigations Departments. Those wishing
to join the ARR must also complete
six months of training prior to being
allowed to respond to an emergency.
Additionally, ARR volunteers must also
complete the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Safety certification each
year. As a result of these strict training
guidelines, currently the average ARR
volunteer has over eight years of service
Acclaimed horse trainer and “horse whisperer” Monty Roberts
hosted a training clinic for ARR volunteers in June to demonstrate
how his techniques in equine communication could help
horses in emergency situations.
with the Society and the forty-plus member team has over 400 years
combined working experience with the program!
Nancy Ellis, ARR Captain and volunteer of almost thirteen years,
has been instrumental in many of the program’s changes. “By becoming
mobile, we are better fulfilling the needs of the community,” Ellis
said. “We will be able to evacuate more horses in a shorter timeframe
because we will be closer to the animals and won’t have to drive 50
miles to the emergency site and back. Also by working with local
ranches to provide secure, temporary shelter for evacuated animals,
we are increasing our involvement in the community. It’s all about
being more focused on the needs of our community’s animals and
utilizing our resources both effectively and safely.”
Self-Sufficient and Quiet Cat Seeks Perfect Match –
Could You be the One?
Lulu is an independent and shy 10-
year-old cat who likes things on
her own terms. Lulu is looking for
a new home with patient pet parents that
will appreciate and love her for the special
cat that she is.
Lulu is this issue’s featured feline
because she’s a wonderful companion
who has been awaiting adoption longer
than any other cat at the Humane Society.
Hopefully with a little help from animal
lovers like you, she’ll find a wonderful
home with someone who will cherish
and adore her and give her the love she
deserves.
Lulu’s Story
Lulu was brought to the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA in December
2004 because her guardian could no
longer afford the cost of keeping her in
addition to several other animals.
Since that time, Lulu has been living
at the San Diego Humane Society awaiting
her forever home. Lulu can be timid
with new people and prefers to socialize
with visitors on her terms. Unfortunately,
potential adopters don’t usually get to
spend enough time with Lulu to see what
a great cat she really is.
The ideal home for Lulu would be a
calm, low-energy environment with pet
parents who would enjoy a sassy and selfreliant
cat. She needs time to get into a
routine and become comfortable with
her new family – then she can truly show
what a wonderful kitty she is!
If you have room in your heart and
home for a quiet and sweet kitty that
needs a bit of patience and TLC to
KITTY CAPERS
Q: How can I get my cat to stop scratching
all my furniture? I have a cat scratcher and
cat tree for her in the guest bedroom but she
still insists on using the living room couch as
a scratching post and climbing the curtains! I
love my kitty but am getting really tired of her
antics. Please help!
Fed Up in San Diego
A: I hear your frustration, and as a
fellow cat parent, I can certainly relate!
Sometimes our pets’ natural behaviors
become a problem in our world, and
scratching is a perfect example.
Here’s the thing, cats don’t just like
scratching, they need to scratch. They don’t
scratch in order to be destructive, but rather
because it is a natural activity. Cats scratch
for a variety of reasons, such as shedding
the sheaths on their claws and scent marking.
Here are some tips for reducing the
damage your cat’s claws can cause, while
maintaining your cat’s happiness and
scratching satisfaction:
• Location Matters: Place your cat’s
scratching post in areas where you tend
to spend most of your time. When a
cat’s scratching post is located away from
her pet parent’s center of activity, the cat
is unable to “communicate” that she is
feeling content and happy in that area.
Instead, she may choose to leave her scent
on the things closest to her caretakers,
most notably where they seem to spend
the most time (for instance, on items like
furniture). It’s important to place scratching
posts in places where your cat will use them,
even if these locations are not ideal to the
humans involved. Many cats will not use a
scratcher if it is located off in a corner of the
laundry room or other isolated location.
• So Does Type: Consider the texture, or
surface, of the scratching post. Some cats
just don’t like to scratch on the carpeted
posts that are so common in most cat
households, and simply switching to a
different texture such as sisal rope or
cardboard might eliminate inappropriate
scratching. It might be necessary to experiment
a bit to see what your cat likes. Look
at the inappropriate items your cat scratches
(couch, wooden table legs, etc.) for clues as
to what texture she may prefer.
• And Orientation: If finding the correct
surface didn’t solve the problem, consider
that many cats have strong preferences
regarding scratching post positions as well.
Some cats only like to scratch things placed
flat on the ground (horizontal), while
others like them as straight up as possible
(vertical), so they can stretch upwards to
scratch. Of course, there are also those that
will only use something in between the
two extremes. Experiment to see what your
cat enjoys best. As with texture, looking at
what and how your cat scratches now is a
good place to start!
• Reinforce It!
Lastly, positive
reinforcement is the
best way to get your cat
to use her scratcher
consistently and willingly.
Since I recommend that
you use food treats, it is
always best to do your
training sessions around meal times when
your cat is hungry and interested. While
working on a training program, it is a good
idea to put your cat on a set feeding schedule
instead of free feeding (leaving food out
all the time). This will provide a built-in
training schedule that helps both you and
your cat reach training goals faster. If your
cat is not motivated by food treats, you may
use petting, praise and/or playtime as rewards
for when your cat scratches on the proper
surfaces.
And don’t forget, the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA offers great classes and
workshops. I would highly recommend
help support the animals and the vital community programs
and services of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
Congratulations to Marianne Harmon, our “Top Dog
Adoptathon 2005 a Huge Success for Animals!
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA extended
its hours and held a number of festivities during the
Adoptathon 2005 weekend, June 3, 4 and 5. In the end,
a record 118 animals – including cats and kittens, dogs and
puppies, guinea pigs, rabbits and a parrot – went to new, loving
homes! Our neighbors on the San Diego Campus for Animal
Care, the San Diego Department of Animal Services, sent more
than 50 animals home over Adoptathon weekend, for a grand
total of more than 160 adoptions for the entire campus!
This annual event, aimed at finding homes for hundreds of
wonderful adoptable animals, is part of the Humane Society’s
effort to bring people and pets together and raise awareness
about the importance of adopting pets from animal welfare
organizations.
KOOL 99.3 FM morning show host Dave Mason was a
trooper! Dave camped out at the Society for two days, sleeping
in a dog habitat and broadcasting live for 35 hours over Friday
and Saturday to help spread the word about pet adoption. San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA president Dr. Mark Goldstein
also spent the night at the Humane Society in a room full of
kittens to raise awareness about adopting animal companions.
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA extends a special
Sponsor a Pet-Assisted Therapy Animal
For more than 30 years, Humane
Society volunteers have brought Pet-
Assisted Therapy (P-AT) program animals,
including rabbits, rats and guinea pigs, to
visit children and adults in care facilities
across San Diego. P-AT animals bring
unconditional love and companionship
to people who are unable to have pets of
their own.
The Humane Society cares for P-AT
animals at our facility on the San Diego
Campus for Animal Care during the
six to twelve months they are in the
helping to provide food and veterinary
care for these extraordinary animals.
to those in our community who
Ensure a “Fairy Tail” Ending for a Dog like Lady
Lady, a 10-month-old shepherd mix, has a real Cinderella story.
Born with a severe overbite that caused her pain whenever she
ate or was touched on the head, Lady had a change of luck
thanks to the Society’s “Fairy Tail Fund” and the assistance of veterinary
dental specialist Brook Niemiec, DVM, DipAVDC, who provided a
life-altering surgery at a reduced rate.
The costs associated with Lady’s surgery totaled over $1,000 and
were paid through the Fairy Tail Fund, a fund used to provide special
medical procedures for Society pets. Established in 2000 after an outpouring
of support for a dog who had been accidentally burned, the
Fairy Tail Fund has helped save many lives and will continue to with
your support.
To ensure a fairy tale ending for a dog like Lady, make a donation
today by calling (619) 243-3441 or visit www.sdhumane.org, click on
“Make a Donation” and specify the “Fairy Tail Fund” in your contribution.
The lovely Lady recovered beautifully from her surgery and has
since been adopted into a loving new home!
PAUSE and Effect
You know about the law of cause
and effect. But have you considered
the results of pause and
effect? Take, for example, your last will
and testament. What happens if you delay
the process of planning your estate and
finalizing your will?
A prolonged pause guarantees that
state law will dictate the disposition of
your estate. A court-appointed executor
will handle the probate of your estate.
A stranger could be selected to care for
your minor children. Bequests to charities
like the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA will not be made.
Please complete and return this reply form
Forever delaying the completion of
your will may cause loved ones unnecessary
turmoil after you’re gone. They will
be grieving, and it will only add to their
suffering to face the uncertainties and
complications involving your estate. They
will be left to the mercy of the court
regarding timing and decision-making.
They may have to stand by and see your
estate disbursed in ways they know you
would not approve.
Chronic pausing may needlessly reduce
the size of your estate. Court costs and
other settlement fees can be expensive.
Assets may be prematurely sold resulting in
unnecessary loss. The estate may also shrink
through estate taxes that could have been
avoided or lessened with earlier planning.
The best way to avoid the “law” of
pause and effect regarding estate planning
is to act now. Initiate the cause by contacting
an estate-planning attorney today.
Schedule an appointment and then get
ready to make the most of your meeting.
The San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA’s development department has
complimentary material to help you prepare
for your visit with the attorney. Call
Shelly Stuart at (619) 243-3410 or complete
and mail the form below.
