13 th Annual Walk for Animals Raises Record Amount Over $300,000 will help to continue care for animals in need! Photos: Tami McCraw and Simran Noon 1 2 Thousands of animal lovers and their animal companions gathered at Crown Point Shores, Mission Bay for the 13 th Annual Walk for Animals sponsored by Ralphs, PETCO, and the PETCO Foundation. This year walkers raised a record amount of funds, topping $300,000 to help support the animals and the vital community programs and services of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. Congratulations to Marianne Harmon, our “Top Dog Fundraiser” for the ninth year in a row, who raised $11,775 for the animals! We’d also like to congratulate our second and third place fundraisers, Cindy Curtain, who raised $5,300 and Charles Kunze who raised more than $2,836. The top fundraising teams were Team Zion Paws, who raised $3,526, and Team GEICO who raised $3,387 (with matching corporate gifts). A sincere thank you to all the walkers, volunteers and sponsors who worked hard to make this year’s Walk for Animals the most successful to date! Putting the “Fun“ in Fundraising Photo: Sarah Virgadmo With the help of some creativity and a winning team spirit, Melody Smith and her fundraising team at GEICO welcomed the challenge of raising money for the San Diego Humane Society’s 13 th Annual Walk for Animals. Team captain Melody developed fun and easy projects to help her team generate donations and the approach paid off with amazing results! The team’s bake sales, “Dollars for Dogs” and “Cookies for Cats,” were a big hit with their coworkers. Staff who donated to the team received paw print ribbons to show their support, as well as their name on a paw print-shaped cutout displayed in the GEICO lobby. In addition, staff were encouraged to take advantage of GEICO’s matching gift program, which helped bring the team to its grand fundraising total of $3,387! Melody and Team GEICO’s efforts are a true testament to the impact that can be made by a group of animal lovers armed with some bright ideas and the inspiration to make a difference in their community. Hats off to a job well done by our friends at GEICO! JL Meow Madness Success at First-Ever Cat Adoptathon Cat lovers from around the county turned out for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s first-ever feline focused adoptathon. Held on Saturday, June 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Meow Madness transformed the campus into cat central. As part of the festivities, the Feline Fun Fair featured booths with helpful information from the Feral Cat Coalition and the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s Animal Rescue Reserve, and Outback Barney showcased his magnificent cat hotels. The celebration was topped off with ice cream courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s, and the Petco Foundation generously provided fabulous prizes for attendees. Meow Madness was a smashing success, resulting in a total of over 60 adoptions for the weekend! Though the event was kitty-centric, all of the San Diego Humane Society’s adoptable animals joined in the fun. A few friendly dogs found their new homes, and even a rabbit met his pet parent at the event. We’d like to extend a very warm thank you to all the attendees, volunteers and sponsors that made Meow Madness possible.
