How Training Helps Our
Adoptable Pets Find
New Homes
Mark Goldstein, D.V.M.,
CAWA, President of
the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
In this issue you will read how the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s certified behavior training staff helps
pet parents work on their pet’s behavior issues. In addition to their work with pet parents in our community,
our behavior trainers also play an essential role in how we prepare our shelter pets for adoption into their new
homes. Thanks to generous support from our community, we are able to provide essential training to our shelter
animals in order to make them more appealing to potential adopters, to assist in reducing their stress levels during
their stay with us, and also to ensure a more successful transition to their new homes.
Despite the fact that our available pets are housed in apartment-like settings and have daily interactions with
staff and volunteers, a number of pets who come to the Humane Society can become stressed by the change in their
environment and/or normal routine, as well as the proximity of other animals.
To ease our pets’ stress levels, Humane Society behavior trainers work with pets on an individual basis, both inside
and outside of their habitats, to make each pet’s stay in our adoption program more pleasant. For example, training
a shy dog that his bed or crate is a stress-free place he can go when he is unsure can help calm him and alleviate his
anxiety. Over time, the end result is a better-behaved pet who, in turn, will attract more potential adopters and has a
higher potential to do well in his new home.
In other cases, the simple observation of a pet’s reaction to his environment and taking steps to alleviate anything
stress-causing can make a big difference in our animals’ well being. For instance, our trainers may recommend that a
dog who reacts to potential adopters at his habitat window by barking (much like a dog at home might bark at
someone at the door) have a shade placed over his window. This decreases the startle-factor of people suddenly
popping in and out of sight, and helps him to relax. Such observations and recommendations by our trainers make it
easier for our pets to find new homes and can aid in devising solutions to potential behavior problems before the pet
has even gone to a new home.
In addition to reducing our pets’ stress and anxiety, the hands-on training methods our behavior and training
team uses with our animals to modify and shape behavior is essential in preparing our pets for adoption. Using
positive reinforcement training techniques which reward pets for their good behavior, our trainers work with pets to
encourage behaviors that will make it easier for them to find homes. Whether it’s teaching a dog that the best way to
get attention is by sitting quietly (and not jumping!) or by working with an under-socialized cat to enjoy touching
and petting, our behavior trainers’ work increases the overall adoptability of our pets. In the long run, the time our
trainers spend teaching and training our pets results in better companion animals as well as more successful
adoptions and homes for our pets.
It is only thanks to support from patrons like you that the San Diego Humane Society is able to take the sheltering
and adoption of our pets to a new level with our team of certified behavior trainers. Thank you for continuing to
support animals in need and for helping us to find them new, loving homes.
In our next issue of AnimalFare I look forward to talking about Behavioral Assessments and how we use this
observational tool to find our animals the best home matches possible.
Dear Humane Society,
I moved to San Diego last summer for work
and by the holidays I was getting pretty lonely
and homesick. I looked online that day and by
quitting time I had found my new best friend:
Cody. Cody had some medical issues and I was
worried, but he just looked too adorable for
me to pass up. I went straight to the Humane
Society after work to visit him and instantly fell in love!
Sincerely,
Nadine Evans
Dear San Diego Humane Society and SPCA,
I was on your website and saw a video of
two playful, bonded rabbits named Shorty and
Angel and I realized I had to meet these two.
My husband Tom and I came to the Humane
Society to adopt both rabbits, and we had
already fallen in love with them. After a period
of adjustment, Angel and Shorty now feel at
home. We are amazed how smart they are and
how quickly they’ve adjusted to their forever home with us.
Thank you so much,
Mary Ann and Tom Galliher
Dear San Diego Humane Society,
Our nine-year-old granddaughter
Vonnie was staying with us for the
summer and asked if we might consider
adopting a kitty. Then, when we
saw the Humane Society’s “Pet of the
Week” in the San Diego Union-Tribune
we came to meet the cat. Although
Vonnie had her heart set on the featured pet, I asked Humane Society staff which cat
they would adopt. They recommended a five-year-old cat named Madison who had
nearly died prior to coming to the Humane Society. We heard how Madison had survived
a severe illness and major surgery. Some people wouldn’t adopt a cat who had
been through so much trauma, however, Madison’s story paralleled my own.
Thank you for saving our Maddy – what an amazing organization!
Sincerely,
Kevin Downey
One-on-One Training Helps Pets Succeed
For many pet parents, training
consists of a few puppy classes
or basic manners courses.
However, for other pet parents,
group-training settings don’t always
serve the needs of their pet. For example,
how would you train your pet if he were
too shy to leave your home, or he simply
didn’t like to be around other pets?
Luckily, San Diego pet parents with
this dilemma have a wonderful resource
available to them right here at the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
The Humane Society’s Behavior and
Training Department offers in-home and
private training sessions and behavior
consultations for pet parents in need of
one-on-one or in-home training help.
For friends and roommates Kathy
Muth and Doreen Rock, training their
one-year-old Miniature Poodle Abby hasn’t
been easy, but they say it would have been
nearly impossible without the help of the
San Diego Humane Society’s in-home and
one-on-one training sessions. Group puppy
classes were too overwhelming for Abby
and the trainers didn’t have the time to
dedicate to Abby’s particular needs in a
group setting without detracting from the
positive class experience of other students.
“When we first started training Abby
we had trouble getting her to calm down
and she also had issues with being
touched,” said Doreen. “So we got on the
Internet and found the Humane Society’s
services – now life is livable and we have
peace in our house.”
On a recent sunny day in June, Kathy
and Doreen brought Abby to the Humane
Society for a private training session with
San Diego Humane Society Behavior
Trainer and Certified Pet Dog Trainer
Margaret Lenoir. As Kathy walked with
Abby through the Humane Society’s
courtyard, Margaret walked by her side
and gave Kathy moment-by-moment
commentary on how to encourage all the
good behaviors Abby exhibited. Whenever addition, seeing the pet and family
Kathy was unsure on how to proceed, members in the home setting can also
Margaret was right there with an answer. give trainers better insight into why pets
“Private training and behavior
are having issues and how pet parents
consultations are a great answer for can most effectively modify their pet’s
those who need a professional to give behavior.
them their full attention and insight
“ ‘Margaret’ has become a household
into their pet’s personal training needs,” word for us,” says Kathy. “We didn’t
said Margaret. “And of course, one-onone
training can give you personalized Abby’s undesirable behaviors, but having
know how we were reinforcing some of
insight on how to apply training to your Margaret come to our home helped us
everyday life.”
figure it out. As a result of our at-home
The San Diego Humane Society’s training, we’ve been able to branch out
Behavior Training Department offers and take Abby through several of the
private training sessions and behavior Humane Society’s advanced group dog
consultations both at home and at the training classes.”
Thanks to the Humane Society’s private training
and behavior consultations, pets are able to
succeed in life, form better bonds with their human
families, and stay in their homes.
Humane Society. Training sessions,
which are $75 per hour at the Humane
Society and $100 in-home, focus on the
physical training techniques that will
help pet parents succeed with their pets.
Behavior consultations on the other
hand are $150 at the Humane Society or
$175 in the home and include an initial
one-and-a-half hour session as well as
an additional one-hour follow-up session.
This allows pet parents and trainers to
meet and discuss the pet’s particular
behavior modification needs, devise a
training and/or management plan and
then follow-up with the implementation
of that training.
For many pet parents, in-home
consultations and training sessions are
the most convenient, and make the most
sense, because it allows the trainers to
see the pet in a controlled environment
where the pet is most comfortable. In
Thanks to the Humane Society’s
consultations, pets like Abby are able
to succeed in life, form better bonds
with their human family members, and
stay in their homes. For the pets and
Putting the “Fun“ in Fundraising
Photo: Sarah Virgadmo
With the help of some creativity and a winning team
spirit, Melody Smith and her fundraising team at
GEICO welcomed the challenge of raising money
for the San Diego Humane Society’s 13 th Annual Walk for
Animals. Team captain Melody developed fun and easy projects
to help her team generate donations and the approach paid off
with amazing results!
The team’s bake sales, “Dollars for Dogs” and “Cookies for
Cats,” were a big hit with their coworkers. Staff who donated
to the team received paw print ribbons to show their support,
as well as their name on a paw print-shaped cutout displayed
in the GEICO lobby. In addition, staff were encouraged to take
advantage of GEICO’s matching gift program, which helped
bring the team to its grand fundraising total of $3,387!
Melody and Team GEICO’s efforts are a true testament
to the impact that can be made by a group of animal lovers
armed with some bright ideas and the inspiration to make a
difference in their community. Hats off to a job well done by
our friends at GEICO!
Success at First-Ever Cat Adoptathon
Cat lovers from around the county
turned out for the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA’s
first-ever feline focused adoptathon. Held
on Saturday, June 9 from 9:30 a.m. to
8 p.m., Meow Madness transformed the
campus into cat central. As part of the
festivities, the Feline Fun Fair featured
booths with helpful information from the
Feral Cat Coalition and the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA’s Animal
Rescue Reserve, and Outback Barney
showcased his magnificent cat hotels.
The celebration was topped off with ice
cream courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s, and the
Petco Foundation generously provided
fabulous prizes for attendees.
Meow Madness was a smashing
success, resulting in a total of over 60
adoptions for the weekend! Though the
event was kitty-centric, all of the San
Diego Humane Society’s adoptable
animals joined in the fun. A few friendly
dogs found their new homes, and even a
rabbit met his pet parent at the event.
We’d like to extend a very warm
thank you to all the attendees,
volunteers and sponsors that made
Meow Madness possible. Be sure to
mark you calendars for our next
adoption event, Barktoberfest, on
October 13, where our lovable pups
will get their turn in the spotlight!
Everything Goes with
Black!
Black cats have unfairly suffered from
negative reputations for too long. And
today unfortunately, potential adopters
frequently overlook these elegant kitties
as well, since their dark color makes them less
noticeable than their brightly colored counterparts.
It’s time for the black cat’s luck to change! Did
you know that in England and Japan black cats
are actually considered to be lucky? Many people
consider black cats to be the gentlest and smartest
members of the cat family. Plus, with a black cat in
your arms, you’ll always be fashion forward. The
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA has several
gorgeous ebony felines in need of a loving home.
Come by the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
today to meet these beauties – we’re sure you’ll
want one of these wonderful black cats to cross
your path any day.
Black Cat Myths
Throughout History:
• Fishermen’s wives believed that black cats
would keep their husbands safe while at sea.
Black cats were considered so valuable in
fishing villages that they were often stolen.
• If a black cat sneezed near a bride on her
wedding day, her marriage was predicted to
be a long and happy one.
• King Charles I of England owned a black cat
that he felt brought him luck and was so
afraid of losing it that he had it guarded day
and night. The day after the cat passed away
from illness, he was arrested.
An Appeal to Plan Ahead
Some people are “awakened” to
the importance of estate planning
when faced with a death in the
family. Others may be prodded by a
vacation that entails risk, such as a
river trip down the Grand Canyon.
Still others may be goaded to visit their
estate-planning professional prior to
their first flying lesson or other newly
acquired hobby.
Attorneys will tell you that other “will
motivators” also include serious injury or
illness, or some other sobering crises. If
you were to quiz every person you know
over age 50 about the importance of
having a valid will in place, you would
likely find that 100 percent of them are in
favor of such prudent planning.
Everyone, it seems, agrees with the
wisdom of having a current will.
Yet many people die without a will,
and many others depart with a will
that is out-of-date or invalid. Unless
we are faced with a compelling reason
to act, it is simply easier to wait until
a more convenient day. For many, that
day never comes.
Your friends in the Development
Department at the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA urge you to take a
proactive approach and initiate the
estate-planning process. We believe the
benefits for you and your family are too
compelling to do otherwise.
If you do not have an estateplanning
attorney, ask your trusted
friends for suggestions. You might also
ask the trust officer at a local bank for
recommendations. If you wish, we can
provide you with several names of local
estate planning attorneys we respect.
The important thing is to act on your
impulses to put your estate in order. It
may take a little effort, but the end result
– peace of mind – is well worth it.
s Volunteer Picnic Provides Island-Style Fun
The Humane Society’s 2007 Volunteer Recognition
Picnic was held at the MCRD Boathouse Park in Point
Loma on June 17, 2007. More than 100 volunteers, their
guests, not to mention 50-plus dogs, enjoyed fun in the
sun, games and food at the tropical-themed event held to
thank and recognize volunteers for their hard work and
dedication to the Humane Society. For the second year in
a row Humane Society President Dr. Mark Goldstein also
got into the spirit and dressed in costume.
s Healing with H 2 O
When Humane Officers brought in a four-month-old Labrador
Retriever mix named Chocolate with a fractured elbow that
had been left untreated, Humane Society veterinarians knew
it would take more than surgery to help Chocolate regain use
of her front leg. Even after a specialized orthopedic surgery to
repair the bones in her elbow, Chocolate still needed therapy to
stretch ligaments and tendons that had tightened after weeks of
holding up her hurt paw. Thanks to Trish Penick of Cutting Edge
K9 Rehab, Chocolate got the chance to swim her way to better
mobility. Now, Chocolate has found a forever home with pet
parents who are committed to making her strong again.
Pet-Assisted Therapy Hits the Books!
On July 26, 2007 the San Diego Humane Society’s Pet-
Assisted Therapy program participated in the first “Tales for
Tails” program at the Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library. The
P-AT Program brought rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and a dog to
the one-hour reading program for children grades one through
six. The children interacted with the animals and also read
to them as a way to improve their reading skills. The P-AT
program will be participating in the program on the fourth
Thursday of each month for the next year.
s Animal Adventure Camp Brings Kids
and Animals Together
The San Diego Humane Society’s summer Animal
Adventure Camp, held July 9 - August 17, 2007 was
a HOWL-ing good time for more than 500 animalloving
kids. Children ages five to 13 learned about
companion animals and gained compassion for all
living things through interactions with a variety of
animals, including dogs, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs,
rats, reptiles and even a goat, during the annual weeklong
summer day camp held at the Humane Society.
s Humane Society’s Help Makes the
Louisiana SPCA’s Grand Re-Opening
Possible
In May 2007 San Diego Humane Society staff
traveled to New Orleans to help the Louisiana SPCA
open their new shelter. The organization is starting
to get back on its “paws” after their operations were
devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Investigations Department Saves Two Dozen
Cats from Extreme Heat
In July 2007 the San Diego Humane Society’s Investigations
Department seized 24 cats being housed in an outdoor dog run.
With a recorded temperature of 108 degrees at the time of
seizure, the cats exhibited signs of extreme heat exposure.
The cats were transported to the Humane Society to receive
medical treatment. Two weeks later an administrative hearing
was held to determine if the Humane Officers were justified in
the seizure of the cats and the seizure was upheld. At the
hearing the cat’s owner decided it would be best to relinquish
the cats to the Humane Society. At press time the cats were
being prepared for adoption into new, loving homes.
Ask Doctor B
THE LOW-DOWN ON HIP DYSPLASIA
Q: I am planning on adopting
a larger-sized dog and have heard
that bigger dogs can be effected
by a condition called Hip
Dysplasia. What is Hip Dysplasia
and what kind of effect does it
have on dogs? Also, what are the
treatments available for dogs with
Hip Dysplasia?
– Eager to adopt in Alpine, CA
A: Thank you for your question.
Although Hip Dysplasia (HD) is a
common condition and can occur in any
size dog and sometimes even cats, you
are correct in that the condition is most
prevalent and problematic for larger
dogs (dogs weighing 40-pounds or more).
A dog’s hip joint is made up of a
ball (femoral head) and a socket (pelvic
acetabulum). Normally, the bone
structure of the socket and the soft
tissues of the joint (ligaments, tendons,
and joint capsule) tightly hold the ball
inside the socket, allowing for normal
rotary action of the hip when a dog
walks, runs or jumps.
In a dog with HD, the joint is
dysplastic or “too loose.” In a
dysplastic joint, the ball does not
fit tightly in the socket, allowing for
too much movement in the joint, which
in turn, creates abnormal “rubbing”
between the bones that make up the
ball and socket. Over time this rubbing
causes degenerative changes in the
joint and leads to the development of
Osteoarthritis. It is the arthritis that
creates the symptoms that we see in
dogs with HD, including difficulty
rising after sleeping, lameness, pain
when the hind legs are manipulated
and a reluctance to play or move
quickly. Unfortunately these symptoms
are often progressive, meaning that
they worsen with age and time.
While HD is known to be a genetic
condition, the exact mechanism of
the genetics is still not understood.
However, the condition is definitely
more common in certain breeds of
dogs. German Shepherds, Labrador
Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and
Rottweilers are all breeds commonly
affected by HD. Of the large breed dogs,
Standard Poodles and Greyhounds are
two breeds that appear to be affected
least often by the condition.
The good news is that if a dog
develops arthritis as a result of HD,
there are a number of treatments that
can help manage the dog’s pain and/or
stiffness. For example, Non-Steroidal
Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
such as Rimadyl or EtoGesic, are
commonly used and make a marked
difference in the quality of life for a dog
with HD. The downside to prescribing
NSAIDs is that they can cause side
effects; however, the incidence is very
low and for the vast majority of pets
that take the medications their quality
of life is greatly improved.
Nutritional supplements like
glucosamine, chondrotin, and omega-3
fatty acids may have some long-term
beneficial effects for dogs with HD. In
addition, homeopathic treatments such
as physical therapy, swimming and
canine massage can also be helpful in
easing a dog’s stiffness and pain. Lastly,
controlling a dog’s weight and keeping
him on a consistent exercise program
can also be beneficial in reducing some
of the effects of HD.
In addition to medications,
nutritional supplements and weight
loss, there are a number of surgical
treatments available for dogs with HD.
Some of these surgical procedures are
used with young dogs whose HD has
been diagnosed by Xrays, but has not
yet caused arthritis or secondary
degenerative joint disease. Other
surgical procedures are utilized to
alleviate pain and discomfort after a
dog has developed arthritis.
Although Hip Dysplasia can be a
very significant health issue for a dog,
during the last decade, medications and
even surgeries have been developed to
allow dogs with HD to live pain free for
many years.
Sincerely,
Jim Babbitt, D.V.M.
The Skinny on Exercising with your Dog
Many of us like the idea of
staying fit while spending
time with our dog. The
benefits of exercising with our canines
are numerous: along with maintaining a
healthy weight, exercise will keep your
dog’s joints and muscles strong and
flexible. It also improves the cardiovascular
system and the overall health
of your best friend.
Before beginning an exercise
routine with your dog, check with your
veterinarian because different dogs
require different types and amounts of
exercise. For example, dogs with arthritis
or Hip Dysplasia may experience
difficulties during a fast paced run. As
a result, tailoring your workout to your
dog is crucial.
Once you’ve decided to exercise
with your dog, it’s important to
keep a few safety tips in mind:
• When running, walking, or hiking
with your dog, remember to put your
pup on a leash. Even the most wellmannered
dogs can sometimes lose their
cool around exciting distractions!
• On hot days provide plenty of
water for your dog. If your dog is fairskinned
you may want to consider protecting
him with a doggie sunscreen.
• If your dog is new to exercise, start
slowly. Allow for warm-up and cool-down
times.
• If you’re going on a long run or
walk with your dog, try to keep your dog
on dirt or grass the majority of the time
so he won’t hurt the pads of his feet.
• Know your dog’s limits (and yours!)
and try not to overextend yourselves.
• After exercising outdoors, examine
your dog’s coat and pads for foxtails,
burs, sores, or anything else unusual.
A half-hour of physical activity three
times a week is a good rule of thumb
for beginning an exercise program
with your pet. Dogs love routine, so
establishing a set time and place will
help your dog take full advantage of his
exercise time!
